My aunt by marriage was French Canadian. We live in Saskatchewan, Canada, not Quebec, and we always looked forward to going to their house for a holiday dinner because we knew she would be serving "meat pie" as we Irish Canadians called it. I left home but came back 8 years later and asked if she would show me how to make it. I also then learned to give it more respect by calling it by its true name, tourtiere. It has become a staple during our Christmas season. Thank you for including it in your advent calendar.

When we first immigrated to Canada 26 years ago it was one of the first things we were served at a new friend's home. It was delicious! They sell a wonderful homemade tourtière you can buy and take home at our local cafe. We are in Ontario but there are lots of French speaking communities around us. I really enjoy these little moments of peace during the day. I care for my daughter's kids, she is a nurse and therefore has long shifts, while they are an absolute delight, the evening painting these, are a highlight.

I am French Canadian originally from Manitoba, now living in New Brunswick, and ever since I can remember we’ve been making « tourtière » every year at Christmas time. We usually make around 9 pies and freeze them so we can have a quick meal throughout the year. It makes the house smell like Christmas. 🎄❄️

La Tourtière is one of the most eaten meals during the end of year celebrations in Québec... Some eat it with ketchup and others like me with maple syrup, delicious !!!

When my husband and I were newly married, we would go to the Publick House in Sturbridge, MA with our group of friends. We ate Tourtiere in the pub there. It was served with beef gravy, mashed potatoes and red cabbage. We loved it so much that I tried looking for the recipe-no Internet back then! I just happened to thumb through my New England Inn's cookbook and found the Tourtiere recipe from the Publick House! Haven't made it in a long time ... thinking of making it over Christmas break ☺️🥧

Thank you Harriet! Never expected to see a tourtière on your advent Calendar! I am a French Canadian living in Quebec and this traditional dish was served with a ketchup much like a chutney in our family at Christmas, and sometimes, with mashed potatoes and a green salad with curdled cream dressing. This is my first year following your Advent and I love it. Thank you so much for giving me even more reason to take our my paints and paint brush during this busy time. Looking forward to tomorrows surprise painting!

My great grandmother was born among the Sioux in 1875 and married a white stage driver when she was 16. She lived until I was ten and I still remember her making a pie from venison and elk meat. She basically called it mincemeat but everyone else I knew at that time made their mincemeat with things like apples and raisins and spices.

My heritage is Montreal Quebec, so my grandmother, mother, and sister made tourtiere for Christmas. They have all passed on now, so I have taken over the tradition. The word “tourtiere” translates to “pie dish” in English. 😊I was tickled to see it as a part of your Advent Calendar. Thank you!

The painting was fun and also learning about tourtiere! Like others, learning about different traditions from around the world is part of the fun of doing the calendar! As a new watercolor artist last year I did some of the simple ones and watched others. This year, I have so far painted all - no masterpieces but I am enjoying and as I don't usually paint small with small brushes, it is great practice on detail and controlling the little brushes! AND, I found a recipe for aourtierre - sounds wonderful and I will be making one! Thanks Harriet and all commenters also!

I recognised tourtiere right away from your painting. I have made tourtiere for Christmas Eve a few times. Because I live in the Maritimes, I’ve also made Acadian pâté à viande (meat pie), which is the same but completely different, lol. You will find as many variations of both of these pies as there are regions where it’s made and families who enjoy it. I like mine with ketchup 🙃

"Tell all you about it" - that's how we here in the American South would say "Tell you about it," so you're good! Although you'd get extra points if you had said, "Tell all y'all about it," because that's the plural form!
