Adventure Across Canyonlands - Hayduke Trail Thru Hike 3

Hiking across Canyonlands National Park during our 800 mile thru hike of the Hayduke Trail! We entered the Needles District, and will walk through the absolute most amazing scenery high up on rock ledges above canyons in what feels like an adult playground. Down into deep valleys in youngs canyon and dark canyon. My partner said this is the single best day of hiking she has ever done.

We enter Canyonlands National Park after taking a little detour to do the Loop Overlook Alternate, a spectacular little trail which takes the hiker to a view similar view as Horseshoe Bend! It's not long from there to Canyonlands and the Needles district where we will be hiking through.
Picked up a resupply package at the Needles Outpost, a hiker friendly convenience store. It would be difficult to do a full resupply here, but they do accept packages if sent via UPS or Fedex (NOT USPS). They have showers, the owners are nice, a hiker box is there full of food other hikers didn't want. Highly recommend stopping! I also recommend stopping at the Canyonlands NP visitor center on your walk in to maybe get a permit to camp within the park. It wouldn't be too difficult, and would save you the trouble of a very strenuous 24 mile hike to get through the park in a single day. The Park Rangers also have updates on water availability on whichever trail you plan on taking.
We chose to take the Peekaboo Trail Alternate through the park, as we heard it is the absolute best option for scenery. This is what my partner has said is the greatest day of hiking she has ever done, so I really don't know how anything could be better? The trail takes ladders up to the tops of rock domes where you hike slick rock ledges above canyons, down into those valleys for water, and back up and over towering rock cathedrals. It really is extremely fun. Sometimes squeezing through caves, and once on the Joint Trail you're walking through a slot canyon. We saw a bunch of day hikers through the park, and yet it still felt remote and wild.
Leaving canyonlands we hike through fable valley canyon, where there are tons of unique obstacles and challenges. Since we are traveling up canyon there are quite a few big dryfalls to climb up, some as high as 100 feet tall! We either need to navigate around these, or do a rock climb and scamble up. It's super fun navigating these long drops! I typically would choose the rock climb, which is difficult with a full pack of food and gear, while my partner would try to find a way around them that was less technical.
Youngs canyon was not much different. To get down into it involved a very challenging and steep descent on loose rocks and scree. And then we converge with Dark Canyon, one of the most beautiful places I have ever been! Flowing water carving through the rock, swimming holes, fun navigating, and amazing in everyway.

I made the mistake of trying to rush through Fable Canyon and got smacked back to reality by that dryfall at 9:18. The Hayduke sure makes for vivid memories. Also, I'm with Sprocket on team walk-around-the-dryfall at 10:11. You're insane.

Many years ago my buddy and I got caught in a dramatic rain event in Needles. Walls of water and falls. The rangers said that was the largest rain event and they had concern for those of us in the backcountry. Was one I won't forget.

I’ve been section hiking the Heyduke, and there were a couple of places where I could not avoid the cryptobiotic soil. It was sad, but I just couldn’t find any trail. As you know, it gets super remote in certain sections. I would like some of the areas to be marked with cairns or something, so that future hikers will be able to better protect the crypto

I unfortunately had the same issue as well. I took a lot of alternates and would constantly have to step on crypto because there was literally no other option and it made me so sad :(

such beautiful and unique country, thanks for educating everyone about the fragility of it. I can really see how the additional problem solving and navigation is giving you the challenge you wanted from a hike. It must've been so cool to meet some other people on a similar to you and sprocket in terms of their experience levels. Looks like sprocket is really making a lot use of the hiking poles, but also seems like they can get a bit in the way in some scrambles. If you were going again would you take some?

spectacular country! also, interesting choice of footwear. You're both wearing trail runners. Because much of this hike is off trail over rugged terrain, did you consider wearing actual hiking boots, like in days of old, leather up to the ankles, vibram sole? I realize you'd be adding pounds to your feet, but I wonder whether the payoff in greater ease of negotiating the rocky terrain would more than offset the extra weight.

My question is how are you gonna deal with the potential for huge fines from the parks service for filming in the park. theyve made filming for youtube channels a huge permitting process and if not followed, huge fines as well. im sure youll fly under the radar at your current level of fame, but Ill consider myself lucky I saw this before being striked.

If you are filming for a for profit and popular KZbin channel you will be wise to apply for the permit and not have to pull your video down to avoid other fines. Begging forgiveness is not the right approach anymore. Joe Blow citizen visiting our parks need not be concerned though.
