Adventure is a 1980 video game for the Atari 2600 video game console and is considered the first action-adventure game. Its creator, Warren Robinett, introduced the first widely-known Easter egg to the gaming world.
"So the guy who created Adventure, a man named Warren Robinett, decided to hide his name inside the game itself... This was the very first video game Easter egg. Robinett hid it in his game's code without telling a soul, and Atari manufactured and shipped Adventure all over the world without knowing about the secret room."

Thanks to Ready Player One, this accessed a very old part of my memory. This is so cool - its been 40 years and I sort of remember this. Amazing how our brains work.

I love how even a primitive Atari game proves to be a virtual space where the coder can hide shit from his bosses. Later games are 1000's of times more complex so the potential for secrets is way higher.

In 1981 my friend found this out on his own. I was like "how did you find this out"? He said he dragged the bridge around exploring and bumped into the dot. He brought the dot everywhere on the game and found the secret room by trial and error.

my best friend and I found this and showed it to my oldest brother. I remember first finding the grey dot by dragging the bridge around and noticing... " hey in that room the bridge and the dungeon itself.. are blinking?? Hmmmm... that means there is another object in this area... i just cant see it.... because if ONLY ONE object is in an area its always solid. so I moved the bridge around until i found the dot. then we tried bringing the dot to all kinds of places. BUT we always thought those areas that have the solid line down the sides MUST be some kind of something like they were special barriers. and we knew you could pass through some things sometimes if you had a lot of objects in one area so we finally ended up trying that and passed through that right room line.

This is the 4th videogame easter egg: RT-55J noted that Halo 2600 writer Ed Fries had previously found an Easter Egg in Atari's Starship 1, which would have been accessible on 13th August, 1977, but after some research suggested that Spitfire was released later on 31st December, 1977, a newspaper ad for the game as part of the Channel F's package was unearthed, and which seems to conclusively reveal that it existed on 15th April, 1977, seemingly making Spitfire home to the first ever video game Easter Egg. In 2004, an Easter egg displaying programmer Bradley Reid-Selth's surname was found in Video Whizball (1978), a game for the Fairchild Channel F system.

There's also videocart 4, from 1977 and has a Easter egg (the same thing, a name well hidden, but with a very big code to unlock it), (Source: funwithguru video the best Easter eggs & secrets part 7). I'm not 100% sure, but I think that there is a Easter egg that a game developer's son found out in the codes that he had at home and I think that this one is the first, but I'm not sure, I know that there is this case and it's really really old, but I can't remember exactly when, I think it was like 1973 or something like that (again, just a name hidden)

Videocart #4 Spitfire was release in 1976. I know, I got mine for Christmas 1976 when I was a kid along with my console and 3 other videocarts. :)

This was kind of an act of defiance putting that Easter egg in there. Atari programmers didn't get a writer's credit for the games they created, so they were expected to labor in anonymity. This was a big impetus behind a bunch of Atari programmers jumping ship and creating Activision.

I knew about this easter egg years before Ready Player One was released. I was so hyped when this game was featured in the movie, and predicted before the end that the easter egg was actually the "key" in the movie's plot. I also incidentally noticed right away that the grey dot was in the completely wrong place.

That's most likely the reason that people didn't find the easter egg until a number of years after the game's release. Even if someone was fooling around and managed to find the grey dot, the fact that you have to place the dot in a specific room along with another item makes it something that you'd have to be extremely lucky to find on your own. We're lucky that somebody discovered it prior to the days where people could just look at the source code for the game and see what's up.

This is NOT the first easter egg in a home video game. The first appears in Videocart #4 "Spitfire" game for the first home programmable game console, The Fairchild VES / Channel F System. The game was released in 1976 TWO YEARS BEFORE Atari Adventure from 1978. The Fairchild game easter egg displays the programmers name and says "Done By Michael K Glass". There is also an easter egg in the Channel F's Democart also from 1976 and Videocart #20 "Video Whizball".

Before I found the dot, I found the Easter egg by accident. The power plug port on the back of the unit was damaged and if jiggled would sometimes glitch the game. The vertical lines that the dot allowed you to walk through would move. If they ended up in the middle of the screen, you could simply move around them. Has anyone else done this?
@donjacobs6209
@donjacobs6209 Ай бұрын
I do remember doing stuff like that... but doing it by messing with the power switch rapidly could cause glitches in almost any of the games and yes I remember doing it in that game as well.
