I'm writing an action adventure book as we speak. It takes a lot of time though. The objects my adventure resolves around exist, most of it's history exists, some of the places exist and look real adventure like. But writing an adventure story that's based on real objects; real history, real places (at least where the adventure takes place) and interweave that with fiction, that takes a bit longer then your average Indy J based on myths or plain made up stuff that's just there to move the story along XD

You absolutely HAVE to read The Smoke Hunter by Jacquelyn Benson! It’s so underrated! Adventure is one of my favorite genres too and this book is so fun! It feels so much like the Mummy and Jungle Cruise combined! It does have some fantasy elements but it’s mostly just historical fiction/adventure

Thanks for the great list. As for my recommendations, I see that Alexandre Dumas has already been suggested. Many of his books have a common theme but if you haven't read Georges yet, you are missing out. Also, Six of Crows is marketed as a YA book but I found the character development makes this series by Leigh Bardugo irresistible to all.

Hey I just stumbled upon your video when I was searching for adventure book recommendations, because I also love that genre for movies and video games but haven't read many books like that yet - so thanks for this video! When you said you're looking for stories along the lines of The Mummy or Dan Brown books, I was like YES! that's exactly what I'm looking for as well. Already had The Lost City or Z on my radar for a while now - ever since I watched the movie -, so I might give that one a go soon :)

In the early 70s, I enjoyed some adventure / thriller books. Alistair MacLean & Hammond Innes are a couple of authors I remember. Lately I have been trying to find some modern books of that type. James Rollins & Clive Cussler are a couple of authors that I going to give a try.

Hey, thanks for this list. I added a lot of these to my TBR list. My favorite adventure book so far (excluding sci-fi and fantasy) is Jurassic Park. Although it's not always labeled as an adventure book, it most definitely is. It takes place on a tropical island, people are trying to survive in the wilderness and brave the elements, it has a lot of action and unpredictable circumstances, and it's just a really fun read with exercise pacing. (It's much different from the film, as well.) If I'm allowed to use fantasy book(s) which are heavily adventure focused I would choose The Lord of the Rings. It has everything you could possibly want from an adventure story. Lots of changing environments, harsh conditions as well as pleasant beautiful ones, lots of challenges to overcome, strong bonds of friendship and companionship, incredible world building with beautiful descriptions that pull you into the world, and great feelings of wonder and mystery. It's also written at an adult level. (Unlike The Hobbit which is a children's book and does not need to be read before The Lord of the Rings.)

I feel what you're saying in this video so much! I love adventure stories but also feel like what I want is hard to find! I'm defo putting some of your recs on my list! Thanks for the video!! As for ADULT adventure books I read and enjoyed, I recommend these for you: Chasing the Thrill by Daniel Barbarisi (nonfic about a modern real-life treasure hunt) Miss Benson's Beetle by Rachel Joyce (two women travel to find an elusive golden bug) The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (a page-turner of a classic) To The Bright Edge of the World by Eowyn Ivey (historical fiction set in Alaska) The Indiana Jones Prequels by various authors (there are 13 and some are better than others - I think they are out of print and hard to find, but great adventures like the movies) Cinnamon and Gunpowder by Eli Brown (pirate ship with a woman captain, told from the perspective of her prisoner cook) Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson (nonfic modern scuba divers find a sunken WWII u-boat) A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson (funny nonfic about hiking a mountain trail)

@@TheBookCastle You say you are looking for books like movies like the mummy, Indy J, Tombraider.... I'm in the process of writing one right now XD I know it's pretty hard to find a real action/adventure explorer type book and there have been surprisingly little actually while I know the interest is still there, people talk about Indy J still, 40 years after it came out, and all those types of movies that were executed well have also preformed staggeringly well. I'll let you know when it's coming out.... still in the process of writing and the way for trad. publishing isn't exactly easy and usually takes a long time.

Thanks for the awesome video, I've added a few titles to my own TBR. As an Australian it was great to see Matthew Reilly's Jack West Jnr series on your list, the series gets even better as it goes on, I read the last book The One Impossible Labyrinth earlier this year and thought it was a very satisfying conclusion to the series. I also encouragingly recommend Reilly's Scarecrow series, which begun in 1998 with Ice Station, though more military thriller genre than Jack West, the books take place in very adventurous locations and feature Reilly's signature fast paced, can't stop reading, writing style. Also due to Shane 'Scarecrow' Schofield's starring role in the Jack West book The Four Legendary Kingdoms, both series technically take place in the same universe. His standalone novels, particularly Contest and The Great Zoo of China (think Jurassic Park with dragons, not the most original concept but a lot of fun!) are also very much worth checking out. 🤗

I'd also like to recommend The Chase by Clive Cussler, historic detective adventure and the first book of the Issac Bell series, the series quickly became quite formulaic and dull, but the early books, this one in particular, were great fun! The Girl With Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson I also highly recommend, it's an historic martial arts urban fantasy novel set in San Francisco during the Californian gold rush. Sorry for the essay I've left you with, I can get quite carried away talking about books I like haha.

You may like The Eight by Katherine Neville. The description makes it sound somewhat fantasy-esque, but I just remember it being clever, a mystery/puzzle, sweeping across countries, lots of real-life characters from history: “Catherine Velis, a computer expert banished to Algeria by her accounting firm, gets caught up in a search for a legendary chess set once owned by Charlemagne. An antique dealer, a Soviet chess master, KGB agents and a fortune-teller who warns Catherine she's in big trouble all covet the fabled chess pieces, because the chess service, buried for 1000 years in a French abbey, supplies the key to a magic formula tied to numerology, alchemy, the Druids, Freemasonry, cosmic powers. As the story shuttles between the 1970s and the 1790s, we are introduced to 64 characters, including Mireille, a spunky French nun who helps scatter the individual chess pieces across Europe lest the set fall into evil hands. Involving Napoleon, Talleyrand, Casanova, Voltaire, Rousseau, Robespierre and Catherine the Great in the quest, Neville has great fun rewriting history and making it all ring true. With two believable heroines, nonstop suspense, espionage, murder and a puzzle that seems the key to the whole Western mystical tradition, this spellbinder soars above the level of first-rate escapist entertainment. Daring, original and moving, it seems destined to become a cult classic.”

Have you ever read anything by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child? I discovered them a few years ago when I read Ice Limit, which is one of those great books where a mysterious "something" is found and a lot of different groups want to figure it out and then strange things begin happening, it was a very fast read and I think it's the type of thing you're looking for. They also write a series about an fbi agent named Pendergast and they write separately from each other too. The books I've read from them lean a bit more mystery/thriller than strictly adventure but I found James Rollins after reading them so I think they're in the same Lane if you end up liking Sandstorm
