Watching this it’s making me realize Simon and Fionna are ultimately after the same thing-something amazing to happen; for life to be more magical. The juxtaposition between Simon and Fionna is incredible, their parallels of misery- one surrounded by normalcy but feeling a misfit and the other surrounded by a wacky dystopia feeling equally out of place. Excited to see where their adventure continues!

Nobody knows what it was like in the 20th century, not even the humans. And worst of all? Everyone only remembers him as the Ice King, who was turned into a sad old man. Not a man Ice King, Ice King who became a man. All Simon wants is for everything to be ‘normal’ again. No more magical weirdness, no more 1000 years from everything he’s ever known. Back to simpler times with Betty in a normal world. This song perfectly captures his sadness, and madness. And maybe (though it remains to be seen) Fiona and Cake can help him with that.

I also just remembered that, as Betty discovered in Adventure Time, magic users get their powers from ones own Sadness or Madness. And we see Simon, a totally normal guy with no magical talents, cast an incredibly over powered spell while both at his saddest and maddest state. Driven to one final resort.

Simon is such an amazingly well-written character. I remember when the original twist came that he was once a normal human from a world like our modern day. Suddenly Ice King became a lot more than a sort of Bowser character (capture the princess, fight the “good guys”) and now there was reasoning to his character. Now in this series, we see how the Ice King was the only thing that kept him alive in this crazy new world, both figuratively and literally. His mind would never have been able to handle Ooo without the crown. Now he’s living that reality, and he feels helpless, isolated, and afraid of his new life. He doesn’t want to be the Ice King again, but he misses the “security” that came with it I suppose. This song really shows all that. Simon was mad once, but his madness worked with the madness of Ooo. Now he’s not, and now Simon can’t really navigate his surroundings anymore.

It’s so odd to me, for I’ve never seen a similar character to Simon in this way; He’s a good man, was a “bad man” or rather a hurt person who got “fixed” or his meant to be happy ending. It never was his fault, but- it wasn’t Marcy’s, isn’t, for moving on happily. He should have his happy ending, this IS his happy ending after the war but, the idea of a happy ending being the truthfully “wrong one” is very.. different. What is moving forward for a relic? Sometimes we just lived too damn long. I know also it’s the reverse trope of Fiona, magical world vs non magical human, one craves it one hates it, but like, christ.

Huh interesting thoughts. I guess in a lot of magic stories involving people subject to a curse, usually curing the curse (or finding a way to coexist with it) is the ideal happy ending. Simon did get what he wanted, but it would have been much simpler if Betty let him be the Ice King. It’s a great way to explore the consequences of that decision, though. And well, maybe it’s not a truly bad thing? We’ll have to see!

It really felt like a father trying to reconnect with his daughter but the daughter is too busy living her own life to notice that... I just realised this scene parallels that one scene in ep 1 where Fiona is walking to the bakery after getting fired. The guy in the background at 0.19 seems to represent the person with fushigi balls, Then he passes by the three banana guards who even say the exact same thing saying 'ok get this, you know jerry from hr?' which is the same thing that was said in the alternate universe. Then the two mushroom fairies at 0.36 are very reminiscent of the two roller derby skaters in the alternate universe, even the way they spin around when shooed away is similar to ep 1. I think that this could very easily be used as proof that Fiona and cakes universe is created from Simons dreams or subconscious.

Part of Simon's journey in this epsisode felt like an allegory for how the Adventure Time staff feels working on the show so long to me. This song feels like Rebecca Sugar singing about how shes gone back to a quiet private life again after once being a sought after rockstar following her episodes of Adventure Time and amazing series Steven Universe. "Aren't I better now that I'm just a normal guy?" What an amazing song and amazing episode.

I was lucky enough to meet Rebecca in middle school at her Tale of Steven book signing in New York. And I needed that most. I had no idea how much this was going to mean to me to this day. I didn’t even realize it. She really changed my life and Steven Universe came on air when I was 7. I’m 18 now. I’ve always loved art but she made me realize that I wanted to make cartoons and my whole life I felt so inspired by her. I really thought that this was the end or that we just wouldn’t hear from her much. I knew I’d never forget her and I wanted to get some sort of tattoo that represents Rebecca’s work… I just.. I’m full on sobbing. I don’t know why I’m crying so hard. Life has been rough I really needed this.

What I love is that despite being sane again, Simon still has all of the other problems that Ice King had. Being lonely in a world he doesn’t understand, and unable to obtain his princess. It’s all there but now in a really somber context. Really great stuff.

It’s probably because I have investment in simon’s character Fiona and cake.
