There's something authentic about the love-stricken madness of Ice King and Candy Queen; it's the one remnant of Simon's humanity that could resist the crown. That's why this chaotic-ass song feels more genuine and beautiful than the polished hollowness of the Winter King's song from earlier; there's no Simon left in the Winter King, he rid himself of his soul and his goodness when he rid himself of his madness. Simon relates to the Queen the same way we related to HIM when he wore the crown.

I'm almost certain their personalities were (pretty much) completely swapped for sure. There's quite a bit, other than the whole "sanity" and "wants to marry royalty" part, like the fact that the winter king had a lab and was shown to have created subjects (the twins, all the people in the winter kingdom, marceline, etc) and the candy queen had certain things like wanting to create a castle in the mountains and her general polarity (such as saying "hi bunny girl!" while she's in the process of nearly killing two people, similar to how the ice king would act completely crazy one moment and be completely fine randomly to some other person) gives me this exact feeling too.

The crown's effects are so interesting to pick apart. The episode tells us that the madness on it's own is the demented need for affection and company, whilst the ice powers alone still turns a person apathetic to those around them. Its a package, together, which is why candy queen wants to be meshed with winter king, but its so intriguing how the crown dictates these aspects HAVE to be together. You want to be begging for someone to stay with you. You want to not care about their emotional needs too hard. The crown ultimately cultivates selfishness that those under it's whims cant recognise, and that cycle altogether is madness.

Just realised, the way the Winter King and Candy Queen start off their own songs is a subtle reference that the crowns madness does still lurk within the Winter King but it also resides within the Candy Queen, after Winter King forcing it into PB's mind so he can have some form of his old mind, which lacks morals and his humanity, while flashes of Simon leaks out from the Winter King's persona, he is still shackled by the madness of the crown. But the crown still wanted to re-obtain a piece of itself and that’s why it drove the Candy Queen to kidnap the Winter King so it can be whole once more, hence the 'blender' part, and Winter King did say she wasn’t always like that, just similar kidnappings Ice King once did, but it’s been over 100 years and the crown most likely was wanting to regain its whole self.

I don’t think the madness actually made her more powerful, it just made her no longer hold back her power. All the stuff she does here is pretty standard fare for PB in the main Ooo, it’s just that PB is very selective with how she uses her power. PB is always thinking and logic-ing about what she should be doing, whereas Candy Queen is just completely insane. If she did get supercharged, she’d probably turn into some sort of Orgalorg-esque lovecraftian world eater, with all the desire to spread and none of the “benevolence” and peace-loving attitude normal supercharged PB had. Either that or the spell would be dispelled by the intense elemental magic altogether.

And so, from their perspective, nothing was wrong. Winter King was the nice ruler who had the region under control, while Candy Queen was a harmless nuisence at worst (since according to WK, the blender thing was a rather steep escalation of what she usually did) And so, with the region so peaceful and in "good" hands, the two likely moved to a different place, where they could have adventures.

Something important to note, the ice crown affects every user with a different sort of madness, based on their personality and what matters to them. To Gunther, the only that mattered to him was becoming "like" Evergreen, so that's exactly what happened. Then we know that Santa Claus put on the crown, and when it turned him, he became the jolly man we know him as, and became "obsessed" with giving gifts. When Farmworld Finn puts on the crown, he freezes EVERYBODY, obsessed with keeping them "safe" because that's what has always mattered to Finn. When Simon puts on the crown, he becomes obsessed with finding his "princess". So when the Winter King transferred his madness to PB, he didn't just transfer the maddening effect of his crown, but also his obsession, which is why the Candy Queen became obsessed with the Winter King like the Ice King was obsessed with PB. It also explains why he doesn't give a shit about Betty in this timeline, because those emotions were contained within Candy Queen.

I mean Simon's in the deepest pits of depression. Man was literally willing to let himself die by episode 3 during a drunken stupor, and his whole "becoming Ice King again" plan is eerily similar to wanting a form of identity death. Simon's a kind soul but he's ironically in a very similar position that Ice King was where he's forever separated from the person he loved, and is ostracized by the people around him (this time due to not fitting in even with other humans, and his loved ones being too busy with their lives to notice his pain, and everyone just comparing him to Ice King due to the Fionna and Cake books). 12 years of that could make anyone bitter and angry. That said, his wish to become Ice King again is both self-destructive AND a twisted form of selflessness due to wanting to give Fionna's world its magic back (and give everyone the Ice King they love so much). However, I don't think it will work out that way because I think the trajectory of Fionna's arc is her learning to be less selfish, and actually become a true hero like her counterparts. Our Finn had to learn to face his own selfishness and manipulative tendencies too, but he was always a kindhearted person who wanted to help people, even if he was a bit of a blood knight with violent tendencies, whereas Fionna is so ground down by the duldrums of life that she's become rather myopic and when given the chance to have adventures, she ignores nuance and the impact of her actions (again, something Finn had to learn) and can be rather insensitive. So I think her arc might culminate with her learning to sincerely value Simon (rather than just seeing him as a sad sack), and start feeling conflicted over letting him go to get Ice King (and magic in her world) back, and might decide it's not worth it. And Simon's arc could be about him finding new purpose and find value in himself outside of Ice King and outside of Betty; cause they're gone and he's still here and he's worth something, even if other people, and even he can't see it.

Perhaps the main curse of the Ice Crown is overwhelming desire. For original Gunther, it was the desire to be Evergreen. For our Simon it was Betty, his "Princess", hence his princess kidnapping sprees. But here, the Winter King managed to transfer it to PB, who's desire likely became returning to her normal self. When she said the key ingredient was Simon, she truly meant it, emphasizing it by motioning to OG Simon as well. She probably knew that she could come back from being blended, but Simon? Not so much. I do find it interesting that the Winter King was able to place such a spell on her, as PB's crown has been shown to counter mind magic, as explained in the first encounter with the Lich. Also, did Marceline die in this timeline? The young Marcy in the room melted after the Crown lost its magic, indicating she was an ice creation. However, she was playing with the axe bass earlier, which she only got after staying with her father in the original timeline, as it was the Hunson family axe before Marcy turned it into a musical instrument.

not going to lie i generally skip through most "musical" scenes in tv shows (not that i dislike them i just dont really find them interesting most of the time) but holy shit I loved this one for so many reasons. holy SHIT the fucking theming in all of this. there's so much to mention: the 'metaphor' itself is great, the music really makes it feel like a "candy land" theme with the electronic piano giving it an almost alien feel (like a kingdom made of candy is), but the chants, themes, visuals, lighting and whatever also remind you that this is a twisted version of the candy kingdom where this castle is thousands of meters in the sky. the banana guards look so demented compared with what we're used to despite not having many differences, their constantly opened mouths with gums make them look very strange and their constant angry expression really clashes against their nicer, quieter voices which only makes them feel more twisted. jesus man, they fucking nailed the music in this show. the intro, the other songs and even the background music heard during any scene is all perfect

Knowing why bubblegum was like this i have a theory for the escalation. It was implied(if i remember correctly) that ice king chased after princesses because some part of simon that bubbled up in the madmess was lookingnfor betty (his princess) and since bubblegum knew winter kng cursed her. This blender escalation might be part of her bubbling up the surface mixed with the madness of being candy queen. She wants it to end and this the solution made through candy queens obsessive craziness.
