Sailor's has a rather large portfolio of inks ranging from the bland to the sublime. They have something for everyone but because they have so many it might take a while to find the ones that call out your name. Some Japanese retail stores in Tokyo and Osaka will dedicate numerous showcases just for a particular line of ink, even providing dip pens for you to test them out. Japan is fountain pen heaven.

Jeff Schwartz yes! I agree with you on the variety of inks, and how it may take some time to find the right fit. That sounds like a dream, to walk into a store like that and test the different inks. I was able to find a store like that in Little Japan in San Fransisco!

I have Haha and Nekoyanagi in a Wingsung 3008 EF, said to be a knock off of the TWSBI Eco, and they perform BEAUTIFULLY. Those pens are real gushers, which helps. In my experience, those lighter manyo inks don't perform well in any other EF/F pen that I've tried.
@rmdcade17174 жыл бұрын
I think they're all gorgeous. I'm especially a fan of the Kikyou, but that Kuzu looks nice, too. Does the Kuzu show any shading or sheening in ordinary writing? The only Sailor ink I've ever tried is Sailor Ink Studio #343. When I first saw it, I thought it looked like a thunderstorm over the ocean. I love it, but it really wants at least a medium nib to really show off the shading.

I like the yamabuki. I have a bottle in my cart at goulet, but haven’t checked out. I just got Sailor Jentle 4 Seasons Gold Tree Star delivered today. I had to translate the image because I got it from a Japanese store on Amazon. It should yellow/orange like the yamabuki. I have Noodlers Apache Sunset in a broad nib, and I just love the shading it does. I get variations from a yellow to a bright orange. It’s strange to me, but I am really liking the yellow/orange and also brown inks I have bought so far. I would have thought it would be blue, as generally that is my favorite color.

What paper? I’m finding the haha and nekoyanagi to be very light in pens as well. I plan to try it in my fine pelikan and see if that helps, it seems to have a wetter flowing nib.
@DDixon-kk1kf4 жыл бұрын
I used up a sample of Nekoyanagi in a TWSBI 580 Bold and found that it was still a little light. My solution was to limit the space within the ink chamber every once in a while to make the nib write wetter. If I had thought about it sooner I would have used a drop of the Vanness White Lightning, according to reddit a drop of dish soap the size of a toothpick tip can render similar results.

This would be amazing except that the use of a full cotton swab of ink to just do a tiny swatch makes me cringe so hard at the wastefulness. I'm low income and even buying ink samples of most of the inks I'd love to get is too expensive. Wasting that much ink is like seeing someone buy a huge plate of lobster, take tiny nibbles off each claw and another tiny bite of lf the tail and then immediately throw the rest of the piece in the compost bin. Please - you can use the back end of your glass dip pen to spread a swatch. You don't need to waste expensive ink like that. Cotton swabs hold so much liquid. You're so lucky to be able to try inks, that's such a shame that you waste so much of it. If you were using a cotton swab to cover half an index card, sure. But not a 1/2"x3/4" rectangle, come on!
