Amity saw Luz had stopped typing, but no text came through. She gave it ten minutes before realizing she’s deleted what she was going to send. “Coward,” she huffed, tossing her phone into one of the cushioned chairs. She slumped down into her blankets and felt the tears finally break past her perfect mask. Why had Luz done this? Why was she always so confusing?! Disappearing or suddenly changing her mood when they were happiest, and always looking at her like... like she was the only girl in the world. Amity pulled a pillow close and ran her fingers along the case. She wished it was Luz’ hair, or even that stupid beanie. She knew they made each other happy. Luz made her giddy just from being around, and she looked back with the same intensity at the darker girl. But there was always a desperation, a fear that crept into her eyes when things became too perfect. It wasn’t immediate, like fear of her or their relationship. When they’d kissed, Luz had seemed happier than ever, and had seemed even more reluctant to leave... Amity sat up and slammed her pillow into her face. She yelled into the object at her own stupidity. Rolling out of bed, she picketed her phone and grabbed up her shoes, rocketing for the door. She didn’t bother giving an excuse. She raced to where Luz allegedly lived, the strange knick-knack shop for owl meat or something, and pounded on the door, slightly out of breath. A strange woman with a grey mane of hair answered, clearly half asleep. “Wha-“ “Is Luz here?” Amity asked, not waiting to be questioned. The woman seemed to realize Luz was in trouble, and stepped aside. “Second door on the left,” she said, gesturing towards the stairs. Amity gave her a nod of thanks and headed off, giving the door a sharp knock before pushing it open. Luz was inside, and scrambled for her beanie with reckless abandon, but Amity retrieved it first. She held it hostage above Luz’s arms as she jumped at it, amused slightly. “Amity, give it back! I said I’m sorry! I-“ “I already know, dolt. Calm down and beg for your life.” She hadn’t meant it to come out that menacing, but she stood by it. Luz froze and clapped her hands over her angled ears in fear, despite Amity’s nonchalante expression. “Please don’t kill me?” came a squeak. Amity considered. “Okay. But you have to finish our date.” “Finish? But we already went home? How are you even here, actually?” “Unlike some of us, I can actually run when I need to get places, not fly on a stick. And you didn’t give me a goodnight kiss.” Luz blushed and shuffled her feet. “I don’t deserve a kiss. We can’t-“ “Bull. We can and I will. Unless you tell me right now that you don’t feel anything for me, I am not letting you back out on us.” Luz frowned and stomped her foot adorably. “Of course I feel something! It’s not that simple!” “Do explain.” “If I date you, I’ll be distracted! Things might go after you! I- i could lose you...” Amity felt her heart twinge in both sympathy and joy at how deeply Luz felt about her, and stepped closer. “I want to be there with you. To take these risks with you. You’ll just have to show me how to do magic like you. Maybe we can use my music somehow. I’ve always wanted to be a magic girl,” she teased. Luz pouted, and Amity laughed. “Here, you take this,” she placed a pink note on Luz’ hair. “This,” her beanie covered the note. “And this,” she placed a small kiss on Luz’ cheek. “Now, are you going to pay me for my trouble?” Luz stalled for a moment at the kiss, but recovered and leaned in to give Amity her favorite gift: a real kiss. “Thanks Luz. See you tomorrow. And by the way: don’t be such a pansy, and actually text me next time.” As Amity left and Luz flushed, she heard the paper being drawn out of the beanie. She thanked Eda, and bolted for home, knowing Luz might chase her if she did.
