Fabio's face when you asked right after "any comments?".... priceless! Lucky all is well - saw one time another sailing channel on a mono loosing their outboard into the sea - with help they dived it up from the bottom of the sea - got it dry and everything was fine - so some things are really "stronger" then we can imagine...

That was scary! Yoda made a bee-line to the beach and didn't look back. Liz , I and Tannerdog had a somewhat similar event, both of us flipping our kayaks in a raving river. I thought I lost T, but he popped right up, wearing his life jacket. Lost my paddle thougfh, and Liz and had to raft up until we could get to shore.

Wow! Glad it was just bad luck on a small wave, with no greater consequences than the two of you on a scary moment. It might be my impression but it seemed to me that Yoda enjoyed it in her way :) Nice to see you're all fine and laughing of it. One more memory for your round trip book! See you on the next video. Yamaha makes a corrosion-protection product called Yamashield. Once you are confident all the salt is gone and it is dry again, I'd coat everything in the motor with that stuff. It has kept my little outboard looking great. Glad nobody was hurt!

Hmmm...guys, I have often wondered why 'newby' cruisers don't show footage of them practicing inflatable dinghy management techniques in shore landings through the surf! I guess the short answer is because they don't practice, the Med and most Caribbean islands either don't have ocean swells and/or have more benign landing zones. On Australia's east coast we have a several thousand miles of coastline peppered with beaches, most of them designated surf beaches patrolled by volunteer lifesavers, who after the advent of inflatable dinghies that we called "rubber duckies"--and before jet skis--had to learn how to negotiate the surf in all conditions so as to effect rescues of bathers in treacherous conditions which can evolve in a matter of minutes as extreme wave action can cause shifting sandbanks due to sweeping undercurrents as the water crashing ashore seeks to return to sea. To a lesser significance this ebb and flow of water occurs everywhere. So, you need to practice. practice, practice! But what? There are some basic rules. Never try to land on shore where the waves stretch from headland to headland, unless in the case of an emergency, by which you follow the following basic procedures: i) Always look behind you--though the footage was edited the look on your face suggests that you were taken by surprise--to see if there is a large wave developing, often 1 in 5-10, in otherwise seemingly easily negotiated surf conditions, ii) Ride in on the back of a breaking wave in front of you, 10-20 feet behind it depending on the size of it--big is more--and which requires subtle throttle control to maintain your position given that the rise of the beach will dictate a shore-break and the speed of the wave in front and behind iii) If you have a 'rogue' wave--anything larger than the average sized wave--coming from behind you and water depth in front of you quickly reducing--turn the dinghy and run parallel to the beach between the waves until you find a landing zone with calmer water, or alternatively an unbroken shoulder of a wave where you can head back out to re-assess your best entry to your desired landing zone, given the surf conditions, OR race ahead of it, depending on the options of enough water depth, or a shore-break iv) If you are exiting the beach, DO NOT race at broken waves; instead, ease up to them and then use your throttle to increase 'resistance' to the wave, pushing through the white water, minimising the lifting action of the wave on the bow of your dinghy. v) If there is an imminently breaking wave in front of you--determining this requires experience, i.e. practice--while exiting the beach, either run up the beach in between the waves, or retreat, vi) Train the 'pan-licker' to sit in the middle of the dinghy, thereby having Kristin sit more forward holding a rope tied to the bow, It both flattens out the dinghy in the water, and you/she can observe the conditions in front better than the helmsman can, vii) Develop hand signal protocols, between you and her, e.g. palm of the hand patting down = back off the throttle, lifting palm up = increase the throttle, fist = steady as she goes, a sideways flat palm down cutting motion = throttle off, communicating constantly, practicing these signals until they becomes second nature to both of you. NB. Only experience will help you to discern all the variables mentioned above. Obviously you don't want to tip your dinghy over practicing either, so practice parallel to beach motoring manouvers in relatively calm conditions to help you recognise water depth perceptions, and the association between those depths and wave actions so there develops instant recognition skills. After all, you have the time! The San Blas islands gives you the perfect conditions to practice these beach landing skills in relatively mild surf/wave conditions...for both of you on the helm of the dinghy. Try to dedicate 30 minutes minimum at least 4 days per week, starting off in relatively benign conditions, whereby you learn how to make the dinghy perform more like a sports car than a 'pontoon'. It's worth the fuel burn to have that expertise!. ALL of the above skills & procedures require split-second decisions, so PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! As Kristin states in the video, your dinghy is as important as any other element on the boat to maintain that lifestyle safely. Luckily, there was enough air in the outboard to be able to restart the engine after it got dunked. Colin on 'Parlay Revival' was not so lucky. Whilst the South Pacific islands are mostly surrounded by protective reefs, the Western Pacific can be a whole other ball game, where deep water is your friend, and fast-rising onshore undersea bottoms your challenge to negotiate the power of large swells. That's what makes the east coast of Oz so potentially dangerous. Lucky for most of us, we grow up swimming in those conditions, learning essential surfcraft. Most drowning victims in Oz are either tourists or inlanders with limited experience in our surf, if any. As an aside, when was the last time you did a MOB drill? No offence intended, but it might be just your 'pan-licker' which goes over the side. If you are anything like me, I would want my best friend rescuable! You have demonstrated over the last couple of years a measured process of developing your cruising lifestyle skills. Keep that process going in every facet. Every passage should include at least one MOB drill by at least one of you, a and review, alternating between you both. It is worth noting that Sailing Zatara had watches that triggered alarms onboard when dunked. If I recall correctly they provided GPS positions on-screen on the boat. With only the two of you--or 3 including the 'pan-licker'--aboard it's something that might be worth exploring. Good luck, guys. Cheers

@@HarborsUnknown I think it's because it has been designed by former live aboard world cruisers. It's very buoyant and has larger underslung wooden oar's which should give better stability in the cascading swell, plus it can be also rowed from a couple of positions. As a former rowing coach maybe you could try keeping the oars flatish to the water and keep the steerage on the oar's and let the waves propel you to shore.

@@HarborsUnknown OC maintenance free with no inflatable leaks. OC Lighter 3.5m is 54kg, (carbon 44kg), Highfield Classic 3.4m 71kg (Ultralight 53kg) . OC should have longer lifespan but cost more. OC probably not as comfortable as sitting on a air tube.

You guys are crazy to continue cruising without a working autopilot. With Each video you both look more and more beaten up. Remember the McDonalds commercials? “You Deserve A Break Today”. You can install a Raymarine, independent autopilot for about $4,000. Then when your B & G autopilot gets repaired you have an excellent backup autopilot when you cross an ocean. Better safe than sorry. B&G two failures in less than a year does not build confidence. Good Luck😟
