Why was the expensive newspaper ad necessary? Didn't you receive offers of collections during the normal course of doing business? I'm surprised your friend with the money agreed to overpay on any of the stuff. The idea isn't to do a lot of work selling low-end lots to scrape a slim profit. Thank God for those Giants!

Was looking online to buy some cards and dropped everything to check out the latest video! Interesting to look at these deals in today's grading climate. Not only would it have cost you 10x to card each of those cards but you would have probably had to wait at least 10 months to get them back if not longer. So your break even would have likely been around month 15-17 months best case scenario (granted the value of the cards has also increased) but regardless you would have sit 15k for over a year. Which means as a full time gig your probably going to be waiting a lot or taking your chances selling ungraded cards that aren't 9/10 worthy. I actually think you would have come out much better in today's climate if you could sit on the 15k for a year. I bet you have deals like this your waiting to find out on though?
@collectorinvestordealer
@collectorinvestordealer 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent point. Totally different environment today. We could not have done this deal in this manner today... I dont think we would have been willing to sit on that much money for a year given that we didnt know what the grades would be (imagine if we spent $15k on grading and waited a year only to have everything come back an 8 with a few 9s)

lucky! i guess the guy didn't realize the scarcity of high-grade cards from that set, ey? also- if he wanted full fair value for the big cards, why didn't he just sell them at online auctions? it's not all that much work to sell a few dozen. i don't exactly know what the guy's expectations were if he's looking to sell them to dealers but won't leave a little meat on the bone for you
@williamchang3509

Good points. If he was an older gentleman, then he may have wanted top dollar for his collection but didn’t have the internet skills needed to post on eBay. Or, he was too greedy and didn’t want to pay fees. But he could’ve been a bit more fair and leave some profit knowing the buyers are going to flip most of his collection.

This is so interesting, I've been big into the Topps Giants from 1964 recently. A former co-worker and friend had a shoebox with about 20 of them in pretty good condition, including Koufax, Mays, Mantle, Aaron, and Clemente, and I was able to buy the lot from him. I'm unsure if I'll get them graded (right now it's not a great value proposition), but even raw, some of them fetch pretty decent prices.

Often with vintage cards, the card #1 and the last card in the set are extra hard to get in high grade. Back in the 50s/60s/70s, people often made sets and used rubber bands, so the cards on. top and bottom often got the worst of it

Hey Chris, I assume you have many collection items for sale at any given time. How do you do such an amazing job on tracking each item to tie to a collection purchase? On a side note, I have really become like a mini you since getting back into cards and enjoy the buying and selling. Minus the pony. :) If you ever end up in the valley (AZ) and attend any events, hope to catch up and buy you some grub or drinks for always providing such great content. Rick

Hello Rick, thank you for that and cool to hear you are getting into it! I only track collections that I do with a partner because I need to keep exact records for their sake. I simply use excel. When I buy a collection on my own, I usually do not track it.

From what I"ve seen, sometimes you just have to go out on a limb and spend the money....to MAKE the money (i.e. the $5 grand ad in the LA times). It's the chance you take. Usually, it does pay off....usually.......however, nothing is EVER guaranteed. NOthing ventured ...nothing gained either... It's like doing a show..booths can get quite expensive..then again, it can pay off well.

Time machine question.. knowing what you know now about the Giants set.. would you have paid the 25k for the collection as a whole?

Love the videos you post. I’m in my 50’s and collected cards years ago but gave up on it. But now seeing how much cards are bringing I’ve started trying to but graded cards up front to flip. Any pointers would be appreciated. I’m buying football and basketball mostly.

Wow. Thousands of dollars for oddball commons. Talk about your "diamonds in the rough". Nicely done. I think it also shows how much you guys had learned from past deals. Thanks again. Love your stories.
