The novel was amazing. It's like Earl Mac Rauch took a tiny spoonful of ideas from his head and spread it on film. But he had this giant, vividly conceived universe around Buckaroo Banzai.

With New Jersey's jam box radio in the background, having normal music programming interrupted by news of an alien invasion in progress, over New Jersey, just like in 1938.... I've seen this movie easily a hundred times, and it never stops giving. For all of its junky, thrown-together appearance, it is a masterpiece of immersive detail.
