Went to San Francisco last month, last time before that was 19 years ago and we took our kids this time and we all loved it! We also did Alcatraz and we all really enjoyed it. Never felt unsafe at all but we knew which areas to stay away from. It’s a beautiful city. Glad you enjoyed it.

So glad you guys got a sunny day for your visit to Alcatraz! I hope you enjoyed the city. It's where I was born and raised so it holds a special place in my heart now that I've moved away. The other bridge is the Bay Bridge that heads over to Oakland. The island it's built through is Treasure Island which was the location of the 1939 San Francisco Worlds Fair. It was a lesser known worlds fair because it was overshadowed by the 1939 New York Worlds Fair.

Just wanted to clear one thing up that I’ve seen in the comments: The Golden Gate Bridge is named after the entrance to SF Bay. It was called the Golden Gate long before the bridge existed. The official name of the color of the paint on the bridge is “International Orange”.

As a Baby Boomer Brit I first took my parents to ALCATRAZ in 1975, and the boat ride was only $2... then after moving to HOLLYWOOD to work in the industry, my new bride and I honeymooned in San Francisco, and again I saw the old federal prison with her. Seemed appropriate starting out a marriage don't you think.. It was the movie ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ 1979, with Clint Eastwood that restored, re-painted the Broadway cellblocks etc. Clint had filmed there three yeats earlier for one of the DIRTY HARRY movies - THE ENFORCER... But Lee Marvin beat him to it when Alcatraz was one of the main sets for POINT BLANK 1967, and it was the very first movie to be shot on the rock! Well Shawn and Charlotte, glad you didn't film the downtown area what with all the stores gone, junkies and despair. Very high crime rate, especially thefts from cars. My mother was robbed in our Travelodge Fishermans Wharf back in 1975, and thats when the crime rate was very low. The views from the Rock are so spectacular, you both were very lucky to have good weather. On movies and TV shows I worked on over the years in San Francisco, we'd lose days waiting for the fog to clear or the rain, and that was in the summertime. But as Mark Twain was famous for saying "the coldest winter I ever spent was the summer I spent in San Francisco." My late friend producer Robert Relyea was Steve McQueen's business partner and good friend, and when they shot BULLITT there, the city mayor went all out to make them welcome and encourage more filming revenue. I've noticed Shawn you love theme parks, well I worked many years at Universal, was even a tour guide when we had the pink iconic Glamor Trams, later I became their studio historian. You could say ALCATRAZ is a theme park in itself, it's the biggest attraction for sure! Now if you went over the Golden Gate bridge you could stop bt the California's second most famous prison SAN QUENTIN... they even have a visitors gift shop, and they sell souvenirs made by the inmates, like well crafted Cable Car lamps... I still have mine from my 1975 visit. Good presentation Shawn, well narrated and detailed... all the BEST to you both! p.s. Bet you can't wait to ride the new rollercoaster at Universal Hollywood, has the best scenic view from atop the hill, expected to open by late 2025... I live nearby and hope you both would allow me to show you the real HOLLYWOOD sights and locations...!

Bringing back memories from our Honeymoon back in 2010, we did San fran, vegas and Hawaii. Loved Charlotte power walking up the hill, I was once fit like that *sob* lol! It's never changed, the menus is still up in dining hall, and the cells are done out the same, 12 years on! I think we must have bought a goldengate and alcatraz tour as I have pictures of us going under the golden gate bridge on the boat too, unless it was a seperate tour. We did a cool speed boat from fishermans wharf too, look fwd to tomorrows vlog from there. Glad you loved it too. 🙂

Great tour guide Shawn! When I lived in San Diego for work, I was fascinated that we would have minor earthquakes a few times a week but when ever we went to the most active area of CA which up near San Francisco, I never felt any even though the San Andreas fault was there. Maybe the small quakes keep southern CA safe by blowing off the pressure slowly instead of the major that quakes happening occasionally in northern CA. I'm not a seismologist but I hope you get/got to feel a small one, very strange sensation. Lately in NJ where I live, we have been getting big quakes ... what are we doing to poor mother earth?!

The operator of the trams actually has 2 Blackpool boats, but most of the Heritage stock are known as PCC's(short for President's Conference Committee, where they were first devised) that were built around 80 years ago-Philadelphia (route 15/G), Boston (Mattapan Line), and El Paso (via San Diego) still use their own original PCC units in revenue service. Every other city has long retired them (Toronto still has 2 for charters) or only have second hand (Kenosha, WI and San Diego).

There's two more things Halloween related I wanted to mention should you have time. The retired Ocean Liner Queen Mary is kept permanently at Long Beach. There's an event called Dark Harbour taking place there right now that hasn't happened in the last five years. Haunted houses both on and off the ship, entertainment, merch and fairground rides. It would be awesome if you have time. Also the Whaley House museum, some say one of the most haunted houses in the USA, is located in Old Town San Diego. They offer a variety of tours, but I'd recommend the Ghosts & Gravestones tour. It's a year round tour that takes you around haunted places in San Diego aboard a bus that's made to look like a tram. It includes the outside of the Whaley House but not inside. It is an awesome tour. Sorry for these long winded comments, just wanted to make you aware for this trip or future ones.
