The water pump for the fire hoses on the Mark Twain is in the bilge below the main deck. I recall it being on the starboard side, but it's been a few years. The pump I remember seeing was old but I'm unsure if it's the original. The water tank in the hull is fresh feed water for the boiler. The removed equipment in the boiler cage was a steam powered generator for the boat's electrical system. This was functional but over the past 15-20 years more electrical was added to the boat and this exceeded the generator's capacity. The park elected to upgrade the diesel powered generator that served as a back-up and leave the steam powered one in place for show. The capped lines shown in the video are steam/ condensate lines and unrelated to fire fighting.

I was wondering if there was a possibility of the firefighting equipment being below deck. So it's entire possible that the Mark Twain might still actually be a fire engine for the park if needed.

@@nightwheel id think you are right, just a guess, im sure the city of Anaheim has good water volume ,no idea about the pressure, but something like the mark twain would be ideal as it can be positioned anywhere along that water way and has a bunch of water to draft out of. constant, large volume of water could be pumped to a fire by stretched lines, but ill bet there are large diameter pipes plumbed around the shore of the water way , the twain could just pull up , connect and pump away.id thing it would be a "wet" supplyline as well for instant water, rather than a "dry" supplyline where they would have to fill it and open another valve somewhere before it would enter the system to be available for use by the firefighters. id sure like to know its capabilities as a firefighter. pump capacity in gallons per minute (GPM) how many discharges it has an size. does it have any preconnect lines for shoreline fires etc, he makes a comment about it being used for fires along the shore, im pretty sure it was built to supply high volumes of water for the protection of the buildings, small and large within the park. just my thoughts/guesses, i was last at Disneyland when i was 12, 1974,50 years ago, and yup im 62..

Those pipes being for steam makes sense. The ones he showed are far too small to be used for fires, other than possibly on the ship itself.

@@HammondOfTexas0 i agree about the steam lines, the guy at the top of this thread was pretty clear about that area housing a steam generator for the boat. i still think im right. it would make sense to me to use it as a fire pump. when i was a firefighter in the 1980s and 90s, though i was in a small city and we had a great water system (i was also a plumber working for family when i could) , the county i lived in, northern california ,sierra nevada foothills gold country, very fire prone even back then, the county places propane or natural gas powered high capacity fire pumps placed near ponds and irrigation ditches, catch a grass fire or wildland fire, we all had a code to access them. we could use them to place portable water tanks or to fill out tank on the engine or watertender (or tanker) . they were very helpful.

How often does the fresh water tank have to be filled and where do they do it? Steam locomotive engineer here and I’ve always been curious about the logistics of running the Mark Twain.

My sister was helped by one of these “policemen” back in 1958. I was with her, being only 5, when the car broke down. The “police” showed up, then 4 “service guys” showed and pushed us out of the way. We got a few C tickets for our trouble and given another car to continue our adventure. Later that day we got to ride with Walt down Main St in an antique car.

Hey Brickey. Thank you for your wonderful videos. I have recently started low dose Chemotherapy for Non Small Cell Lung Cancer. I never smoked, most likely caused by the environment. Your videos, nice sounding voice and kind nature is so comforting for me to watch during my treatments. You transport me to another place and time. Keep up the good work. Last February I sat next to Walt’s statue in Epcot and cried as a thanked him for all he has done. I love Disneyland and all the beautiful ideals that it stands for. Disneyland truly is my happy place and an escape from my worldly cares.

@@HeyBrickey I am just starting another Low Dose Chemo session and I saw your message! Perfect timing! Magic and miracles happen every day! With your positive vibes and outlook I can’t loose! If you want to see what I look like you can search for me on KZbin. Tammy and Alan Showcase videos. I have uploaded 3 of my individual numbers. I am currently training for another show in December. I am taking a little break from choreography for the next 7-12 weeks while I battle. I am hoping to change my Chemo day from Mondays to another day. I usually take lessons and practice Monday nights. With the low dose chemo I felt pretty good about 5 days later. I used to dance 4-5 days a week. My husband and I used to teach Salsa and Argentine Tango. We dance Tango Fantasia or show tango. I hope to pick up the dancing and teaching when I beat this Cancer! I am also looking forward to going back to Disneyland. I need to sit on Main Street and soak in all the vibes. I need to listen to The Dapper Dans or even better ride the Horse carriage with them. I want to ride the train all the way around the park. I want to walk through the castle and pretend it’s mine. I am supposed to avoid big crowds now but my spirit longs to be in my happy place. I used to go about once a week. My car wants to go there every time I pass by Disneyland, even if that is not where I was headed🤣 I am getting so many treatments everyday. I go to The Cancer Center for Healing in Irvine, CA. It is so amazing and they help build me back up with healing IVs and modalities. I feel like I know you from all your videos. Thank you again for your kindness and support! I talk about your videos to anyone who will listen. It is so fun for me to know stuff about my favorite place. My Grandchildren ask me while we are at Disneyland together what new things I have learned. They are often with me on my weekly trips. My 6 Year old granddaughter thinks Sleeping Beauty’s castle is hers because I have been saying it since I brought her as a newborn. 💕 Tammy❤️

Ms. Tammy, as a survivor of childhood cancer and many rounds of chemotherapy, I understand your pain and what you're going through. My family and I went to Walt Disney World this past year, and sitting in Epcot, seeing people from all over the world be happy together and thinking of the heart of the man who made it all possible is enough to make anyone cry. You will get through this battle. As a believer, I believe that God doesn't give us anything we can't handle. He gave us smart doctors and incredible medicine. God bless you.

My father was a member of the IBEW electricians union. One of the union benefits were Magic Key coupons (or tickets) which were good for any ride. Several months before the park opened there was an open house day for the children of Disney employees. The Autotopia was one of the first rides finished. My brother was not quite ten at the time and he was one of the invitees. I think they started out with like thirty-five cars and by the end of the day they were nearly all demolished! The kids treated the exercise as a Crash Car Derby! I think only two or three cars survived. Hence the bumpers, governors on the motors, and the Squad cars. Things didn't improve much once the park opened and the Deputies were kept very busy.😆 Stashed in a box somewhere I have a 'good driver and outstanding citizen' card from the park. That would be from around '61, I think. My father's last duty for Disneyland was to throw the switch when Walt cut the ribbon on the Monorail. Hence the reason I was in the park that day.

Great and very informative episode, Brickey. It's nice to find out about the magic key. Did Walt have a special entrance, or did he enter the main gates with the guest. Walt was way beyond dreaming, and millions have enjoyed his fantasy and dreams.

They used to have simulated wildfires on Tom sawyer's island near the area where the TeePees and Indian village was. I think this was before guests had access to the "Island". Grew up in SoCal and my parents worked for Ryan Aircraft. So every year, Ryan would rent the entire park and allow their employees to enter for free. So we went every year, I was 12 before I experienced Disneyland with huge crowds! Still AWESOME! Later in the 70s I worked for Alweg maintaining the monorail cars. Fun fact even with the automatic brakes that were applied when the car was going around a curve, you could could still go through the Hotel at about 50 mph! That part was fun, listening to "It's a small world" nonstop for 9 hours five days a week was the biggest downside and the reason I quit. I just found your channel and subbed before I even hit play. I really enjoyed your video, the storyline, the camera work and the editing really shines. I look forward to bingeing your past videos and the next ones too.

How very interesting. The Magic Key segment brought back a memory that may or may not be related. My father, as a manager of an automotive warehouse, had friends in various industries. At least one of these was in a fire department somewhere in Los Angeles. He would use the other gentleman's special id card to get a different book of tickets (yeah, just a little shady, I know). This book had all of one kind of ticket that would get us on ANY ride. It was equivalent to an entire book of E tickets. I'm pretty sure up to this point in my narrative. However, I have a vague memory of those tickets being purple in color, and they may have had the image of an old-fashioned key printed on them. My Dad loved Disneyland and he loved taking his four children there. And even though we could never afford to eat in the park (for example), he wanted us to have the best time we could there. So we got the special tickets, but we'd traipse out to the car to eat sandwiches for lunches and dinners. So we had our own... magic key.

With 4 kids in the family, we couldn't afford to eat in the park, either. I remember getting our hands stamped (and being told by Dad to not even smear it) and going to a small area with picnic tables. I think the picnic area was there when we went with grandma in 1958 but I'm not very sure about dates so long ago.

My mother was one of the unfortunate kids to get stuck on Autopia pre-rail. Apparently someone passing her pushed her off the road and got her car stuck on the curb, and she had to wait for a cast member to come and pick it up bodily to put it back on the track. My grandparents said there was quite the traffic jam behind her when she got back to the station.

Disneyland has their own internal private fire dept that uses modern mini-pumper trucks. They are not visible to the public but are able to better access parts of the park with narrow accesses vs the city fire engines that would also be responding.

Magic Key was used during the 70s and 80s for the discount ticket books and pre-annual pass “all in” passes for people who worked for public services. Teachers and police and firefighters could get “Magic Key Club” tickets. I remember the first “all in” passes which were cardboard tags with a string loop you’d attach to a shirt button. When you got to the turnstile in an attraction where they would take a ticket from your book, the Magic Key tag allowed you to just go in. It was “magic”.

The stuff behind the cage was removed when the boiler was replaced. All the capped pipes were part of the original steam engine components that actually powered the ship. The fire hose lockers are common and required on passenger ships like that for safety. Same reason you will find the same hose cabinets on tall commercial and residential buildings. Usually several on each floor. The hoses are not long enough to go anywhere off of the ship, and are for any fire onboard the ship. It’s a wooden ship, so any fires can get out of hand quickly. The ship is also on a track underwater, so it wouldn’t be able to change its course to get closer to shore to try to put out a fire. It would need something on it called a “monitor” or “deck gun” which would be able to spray water at long distance, like what fire boats actually have. So sadly it was not designed as a fireboat, it was just part of the original engine system, probably where they mounted it for balance and weight when the tank was full. And the hoses are for ship emergencies. There are probably more of them around on the decks.

I was 14 in 1956 when our family arrived in Orange County and Disneyland's Autopia was high on my brother's and my list of things to do once we got to go there. No Matterhorn existed, so all that could be spotted by me from the freeway as we came past that very first time was the TWA rocket to the moon. Regarding the Mark Twain Steamboat; as I recall from an article in the paper many decades ago, that vessel had to meet all coast guard steamboat safety codes in force at the time she was built. That meant that she also had to have a fully licensed passenger ship Master in charge.

The city of Venice, Italy have an entire fleet of fire fighting boats that have the ability to draw water directly from the canals. Modern fire engines and pumps also can draw water from a static source (lake, river, pool) in a process called drafting. To imagine the Mark Twain as an undercover fire boat is completely plausible.

Ummm??? And not just once Mark, it was several times my guy. Now I'm just totally preoccupied with the astro--- wait.... wtf?!? Did you just say Matterhorny??😲😧😀😆🤣Lol omg, you just keep me on my toes, bud. I love it!! As always, thanks for the great content!! Your work ethic is unparalleled! ✌️💜✌️💜💯

I always thought the magic key term came from the ticket books, there were A,B,C,D,E tickets for each tier of attraction but there were also “magic keys” that could be used for any tier attraction. If I recall this wasn’t until a few years after the park opened but I definitely have some from an old vintage ticket book

I would certainly like to see more about the river boat also being a fire boat. If it was to used as a fire boat, it should have had high pressure / high volume nozzles, also known as monitors. They would have been able to deliver a stream of water hundreds of feet from the river. Does the river boat have any hidden propulsion, besides the stern paddle wheels? Hidden propellers or water jets for maneuvering?

I used to work somewhere that had a tiered key system from Yale. We only had three levels but he A key could open everything, the B key opened most doors, and the C key was limited to a few doors.

It's funny to see the "tinker bell" tree. Today it would easily be thought of as a cell tower fake tree, which would further hide its really purpose. And the history of the real "flying" tinker bell, completely mind blowing ! Back then most people in the 70's were thought of having 1 foot in the grave, starting at the age of 70 and doing for 3 years... that was one tough lady.

Techinically the Mark Twain would be classified as Disneys First Fire Boat probably Anaheims one and only Fire Boat since it is landlocked. Not sure if they may have had a couple boats for rescue on the lakes but the Mark Twain would be the only capable of pumping water to fight fires

The only thing ive ever seen on the Mark Twain was the steam turbine electric plant. They stopped using it when they put a diesel Onan light plant in the stern, to extend the boiler water supply. They need treated water to minimize boiler scale buildup, so could not use raw river water in the boiler. 4:43

I think i may have gone to Disneyland in 1955. We drove up from National City (near San Diego) in the Nash. I was only 3 years old and doubt I was allowed to go on Autopia. Eventually, I did go on Autopia after there were tracks. Couldn't jump the tracks though I tried. In 1956, we went to New Jersey in a new Ford station wagon and went to Disneyland in '57 or 58 when relatives came out from New Jersey. Somewhere I may still have 8 mm Kodak movies from the '57/58 visit with views of the area outside Disneyland from either the Dumbo or Tomorrowland rocket ride. At some point, the Mark Twain riverboat had a separate ticket. I don't know if I still have one of those. IIRC, I visited Disneyland every year until 1970.

I use to work adventure/Frontierland restaurants. When we had a break or lunch during Tinks flight we would be near the tree when tink would “land”. We would as a joke write down a number on paper as rating for her landing like a Olympic judges.

Magic Key was the term and logo used on tickets sold to military and civil service employees during the 1960s and 1970s. Magic Key ticket books included Magic Key tickets instead of A, B, C, D, and E where each ticket was good for every attraction, and each ticket book contained one ticket per each attraction in the park plus two extra. The ticket books could be purchased at Disneyland booths with proper military or civil service ID, or purchased at military bases. Each ticket had a large picture of a key and labeled Magic Key.

At WDW, Tickerbell flew from Cinderella's castle and lands on the roof of the Plaza restaurant. The performer must be a few pounds around a particular weight, as the entire flight is powered by gravity. In hot weather, the cable stretches and sags, requiring more weight. If she's under weight for a particular set of conditions, she'll have a weight belt attached to make sure she gets to the bottom. None of that fancy powered trolly at WDW.

All 3 Ferry Boats that ran between TTC and the Magic Kingdom, in Florida, originally had fire pumps and hoses. They were removed around 30 years ago, because they no longer met fire code.
