Finally another Las Vegas person trying to garden in the desert. I thought I was the only one struggling. I have two 4 x 4 raised beds and one 4 x 8 bed and I have to say that it is a constant struggle for me. But I think maybe it’s more that I have trouble kind of planning things out and preparing for the over 100 degree weather. Looking forward to more videos.

I started growing vegetables and other plants not far from Vegas near Kingman AZ and boy as a first time gardener, have I learned some lessons. I no longer have anything growing on the ground, I made some 6x3 wooden grow tables and use containers like storage totes, buckets and pots. I also utilized some large Mustang and Corvette car tires by stacking 2 high to grow flowers in and am using a large bathtub for Brassicas in the cold months and melons in the summer. My issues are the desert varmints like pack rats, Antelope squirrels and rabbits and birds which is why I elevated everything from the ground. The heat is obviously killer on plants so I also invested in shade cloth and since my tomatoes are in buckets I can move them to shade under an awning. Bird netting is useful for keeping cactus wrens and other birds from raiding my plants too. I'm still experimenting with different types of plants and trying to germinate and plant them at the right times in this climate. It's been hit or miss but a fun learning experience. Great video and info thanks for sharing.

That's a lot of great tips and details! Thank you. I'm doing more grow bags this year and will grow vertically for winter squash and melons. We'll see how it goes. I'm excited for March when we can plant.

We are in Golden Valley. Varmints everywhere. We also do self wicking tubs and have most of our plants under shade cloth in the greenhouse. So far so good with our fruit trees they were planted in the ground and mulched. Keep up the great effort it will pay off.

I lived in West Texas when I was a kid. We had pits where they mined caliche. Made great roadbed. Was fun to ride the mini bike in the pits. I hope you grow a bounty of vegetables. Always good to see Barda!

It's funny how when we were young going outside and riding bikes was how you played instead of building a minecraft empire :) Thank you! She was a camera hound in this one for sure :D

Great video. Thank you. 😊 There is a lady in your area who grows the best tomatoes in her garden. She gives classes and sells seeds that will grow in your area. We bought her book and went to one of her classes... her name is Leslie Doyle.

Definetly mulch with wood chips if possible. This will not only help with water retention but also it builds nutrient mushrooms. Anyplace my garden has mushrooms my yields are extremely high.

Any updates with your garden? What do you plan on planting this fall?
@AdventuresInDIY4 жыл бұрын
Sorry about replying so late, the tomatoes pretty much exploded. So much so I had to make sauce and freeze them. Now it's used on pizza I make. Still picking Swiss chard and basil for sandwiches. Since it's so hot right now things are not fruiting. I'll do an update soon. Thank you for being interested.

Nice! I just worry about the nutrients escaping quicker because the whole bed isn't lines with something other than the base soil which could could end up being like sponge. How is the growing going?

That's the thing nothing gets through caliche, it's like concrete.

Lol, yeah, we tried the deep beds too there and pahrump. Unsure how alphalpha grew in Pahrump when I was young. The farmers complained about an old dinosaur fish in well water clogging it up. They wanted to poison them last I knew. I don't think that happened. Lol. I visited pahrump and saw no more farmer, only a cpl ranches. Rock N Doc ranch was the biggest back then, now its just a road. Lol

Why not just above ground beds? Wouldn't it be easier?
@AdventuresInDIY3 жыл бұрын
I've done above ground beds in the past. It seems that the roots might have stayed cooler this season. Plants were doing fine and producing until it got above 110.
@babyaardvark4 жыл бұрын
what is the difference to raised beds?
@AdventuresInDIY4 жыл бұрын
As the temperatures rise to over 100F, the plants seen to handle the heat better. I think the root system is staying cooler than if it was in a raised system. That's just my guess though.

I wanted to see you grow something in the shed? Have you gotten used to using and abusing the DIY shed yet? The “soil” in that part of the country doesn’t seem conducive to human life. Did you dig up any precious metals/jems ? The only thing that brought people there before and now gambling - haha. Good luck with the in ground growing.
@AdventuresInDIY4 жыл бұрын
LOL! Sorry. I had to put the shed project on hold to get this garden in. I'm going through the door install video right now. Yeah, our soil is the worst! I'd still be digging if I found jems :) There are places in the state that you can go and do some mining. Definitely not something for the summer :D In just a couple months the garden has taken off. The tomatoes have taken over. Can't wait for the first harvest.

What about the Vegas water restrictions??
@natureboy64104 жыл бұрын
LOL ;-) You think thats caliche??? At lest you were still able to brake it up with a pick. Go to the Great Basin in west Texas, say around Odessa-Midland-Bigsprings, and try to dig thru real caliche with that pick. TINK, is all your gonna hear. If its sopping wet, other then being slicker then snot, you might get a half inch bite. Even with a jackhammer your gonna beat yourself to death with it. I used to do landscaping work out there, and even with a 780 case backhoe, it'd still take us a full day to dig one hole for a tree with a four foot root ball. Of course, we'd go double deep and double wide, so the tree would have a chance to live for a while.
