Matera, Italy: The 2019 European Capital of Culture | Italy Days 4 &5

WOW, Matera is a gem! The history of this city is incredible-it’s the third oldest continuously inhabited city, a UNESCO world heritage site, full of cave dwellings, and one of the 2019 European Culture Capitals. We had the best day wandering around this city and touring rock churches at Murgia. It is unlike anywhere we have ever been and we hope you get the chance to visit this amazing city someday!

I went to Matera in September 2019. I met a young woman in Pompeii from Liechtenstein who was driving her grandparents camper van all over Europe. She had just come from Matera and raved about it so much that I set aside a day to go. It is the most unique place with a vibe all its own. I loved just walking around and photographing it. Your guided tour with Silvio looked great!

Well, needed a break from putting away Christmas and decided to take a tour of Italy! What a great time it's been! I also love Phil Rosenthal and his show "Somebody Feed Phil". Love his sense of humor and his mom and dad towards the end. Anyway, I'm curious and you don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but I know you've said that Adam is a teacher, curious, does he teach history? Loved all the scenic places you've gone and the eats! We are foodies too and you've made me hungry, so am going to go and fix lunch! Not as good as the stuff you guys ate though. Thanks for my break and tour of Italy!

Phil is the best! We love seeing his parents (well, now just his dad 😭) at the end! Adam did teach history for one year, but he mostly taught PE, Health, and coached (he was a kinesiology major), but he loves history! He reads a lot of historical books, watches historical shows/movies, and listens to history podcasts!

You guys were so close to one of the most beautiful cities/towns in Italy - Polignano a Mare in the province of Apulia, (region of Bari). I haven't been there but from the videos I have seen it is so breathtakingly GORGEOUS that your eyes will not believe what they see. This town is by the Adriatic sea (literally) and the majestic water that crashes on the cliffs will make your head explode! You will not believe the colors of the water! This is the town with the world's most beautiful restaurant - Grotta Palazzese. The restaurant is in a cave overlooking the cliffs and the exquisite water. Unbelievable! A sight to behold! One day, I'll get there. But maybe you will get there first! Ciao!

Ah thank you for mentioning this spot! We definitely plant to explore that region much more next time, but to be honest haven’t done much research to know where we would go! We really loved this region and wish we would’ve spent more time there. Polignano a Mare sounds gorgeous! 😍

You're welcome! Have you seen the photos of this town yet? This place is so beautiful that I can't think of anything else for a long time, albeit I'm in love with Firenze, where I wish to live my last days on earth. But if I return to bella Italia, I will definitely go to Polignano a Mare. There is the old town section in this city which looks very medieval, very old and many streets lead to overhanging lookout points where you can see the sea. Just mesmerizing! Awesome! I hope you get to go there one day and make a video about it. The last thing I see on my computer before I shut it down is a gorgeous photo of this exquisite place. Having seen your video on Matera, which I didn't know about, I will go there if I ever return to Italy. Have you gone to Greece (I didn't see any of your videos about it)? If not, consider going to Santorini, the crown jewel of the thousands of Greek islands. You have to see it with your own eyes, that is, being there to believe it exists!!! This is what is left of the catastrophic eruption of the volcano in 1500 BC, believed to be the Lost Continent of Atlantis Thank you so much for taking the time to reply!

@@AdventuresofAplusK yes, both closed due to increase of cases (we were doing so well). Target date to open again is Sept 5th. 🤞 There's so many rules and fines are high. But ... you can traverse the park and sand to surf, swim, snorkel etc 🙃 you just can't hang out on the sand or park in the lot. Thank goodness you can take a quick shower. 😁

Update! 1. Flights to Milan from Chicago are $500 round trip. Might be a good time to head back! 2. We did in fact book the same airbnb in Matera and getting the same guide for the old caves. 3. If it weren't for you, we probably would not have known about Matera. Thanks! 4. Prices for REALLY nice airbnb spots are well under $100/night for what is basically beachfront gold in Puglia! 5. If you go and we see you there 2 things will happen. We buy you dinner and If I can, I will totally photobomb you! Now I will go watch your Wisconsin vid. I somehow missed that one. I am going to guess you quite nearly drove past our house.

Venice is really awesome! The lack of seating anywhere was really odd to us as well. There isn't much seating, if any, at many of the food places and then you can't sit anywhere in the town. Very weird!

I want to spoil you another one, because I like the way you travel, you are two smart tourists, check Alghero. But since you are in Matera at the moment, the closest highlight is Alberobello. Hi Mark! We’re so glad you’re enjoying them! Our tour with Silvio was 100 EUR total for both of us (we also gave him a tip) and the tour was about 2.5 hours. He suggested our start time due to lighting and heat, but he is very very nice and I am sure would be flexible to your schedule 😃 He’s the best and we couldn’t recommend him more!
