Great video! Those chollas are awful. I felt Kona and Adam’s pain when he was removing it. When we were hiking in Tucson a few years ago, a local was amused to see me with kitchen tongs. It was all I had in the van to remove those sticky chollas. He passed on the local’s tip to carry a comb. It slips under and pries those beasts off without them getting stuck on your fingers. The next hike out we ditched the tongs and got a chance to try the comb. It worked like a charm. Now it’s part of our desert hiking kit.

'There's pokey-sharp things everywhere' 🤣🤣🤣 Love it - Kathryn's definition of a cactus! Bless poor Kona though for getting attacked by one. I always love your backpacking Vlogs and I'm mighty impressed with how you put together your own trail for this. The view from your campsite was stunning - well chosen, though the ground looks so uncomfortable. Were you on rock or dead grass? Don't worry about the 'moaning', I think had we all had to attempt sleeping with that racket from the wind, we'd all be feeling the same. It reminds me of your windy camping in Texas last year. I really loved the colours you captured in the rocks the next morning, totally agree that it was worth the early wakeup! Loved the little nod to the OC at the end there. Super excited to see what you get up to in California. Are you guys planning on visiting San Fran and if yes, have you been before?
@AdventuresofAplusK2 жыл бұрын
Those pokey sharp things don’t mess around! I was the only one to not get attacked! The campsite was mostly rock, but thankfully our sleeping pads help with that. The wind reminded us of that Caprock canyon trip too! So glad you got the OC reference! We were hoping someone would. We do hope to visit SF, but just for a quick day trip. I have been many times and we went once together, so it’ll be a “whatever the van can easily do” type trip haha

At Fremont Saddle facing Weavers Needle, there is a lone pine tree to the right. A mostly flat trail runs from Fremont Saddle to that tree. I camped under that tree last year. Awesome view of Weavers Needle, and you are on flat sandy ground, next to a rock wall that somewhat blocks the wind.

One of my best hiking memories: My companion and I were driving up the Apache Trail and on a whim decided to park near the bridge over Fish Creek and wander up Fish Creek canyon. It was August, but monsoon thunderstorms had cooled things down, leaving a high overcast and surprisingly un-muggy air. The creek bed made a natural trail (most of the way) dotted with beautiful pools of the clearest water. Eventually we came upon one that was deep enough for a swim and we could not resist. As we continued our hike doves fluttered away when we approached and there were many tracks of little critters -- even one set we took to be a badger's. After about 2 miles we came to a place where the canyon was blocked by giant boulders that presented more of a rock-climbing challenge than we were up for. The walk back down to our car was anticlimactic but quick. Then on up to Roosevelt where we had quite an appetite for the fish fry at Butcher's Hook.

Thank you for a fantastic video to watch on a day when you're getting blasted with another Michigan snowstorm - it's good to know it's warm somewhere! Two thoughts... First, not to be an "A+K Nerd", but it seems like you have enough material for a backpacking playlist (Enchantments, Alice Lake, Cirque of the Towers, Mount Marcy, and the Superstition Mountains). Second, I'm really looking forward to you going to town on California national parks! I have no idea what it's like to hike Sequoia/Kings Canyon, Yosemite, Redwood, or others, and I'm hoping those are coming up. Perhaps just as he did with Theodore Roosevelt, Adam can walk in the steps of John Muir. 🙂 Oh, and any "Office" reset is a good one! This video was a lot of fun!
@AdventuresofAplusK2 жыл бұрын
We will have to make a playlist, thanks for the suggestion! We will be visiting 5 CA national parks, but not all of them. We will be focusing on ones that we can get the experience we want during the time of year we are visiting, but have plans to finish the rest next year or so 😃

That sounds great! I can totally see how some of the parks might not work in certain seasons. But as little as I know about California, I know one thing: every time of the year is good for In-N-Out! (Yes, I know you've been there. The hats were hilarious!)

We’d love to share more, but it’s super hard to remember things to say, film everything, and actually enjoy the experience too haha

Backtracking through some of your videos that I missed. Fantastic country but, from my own experience around Tucson, really rough.

We love Arizona! Our only complaint with Tucson are the roads! Yikes!

Hello Adventurers😊😊😊, The Superstition Mountains definitely seemed to be a VERY tough hike, especially when the all trails didn't work. Luckily y'all got out of there safe. The views were SPECTACULAR! Owwwww...not FAIR with y'all chowing down on brisket😄😄😄! Hey look what I found...ICE CREAM! Ohhh it's so good...with the chocolate crunch mmmmm...and the tasty vanilla underneath...oh it's so good I need another...KLONDIKE BAR😝😝😝😝! I really enjoyed the video my friends. Looking forward to seeing what's next👍👍👍👍👍👍.

Your probably not in the Phoenix area any more but hiking to the top of flatiron is a great adventure. We did the loop as a day hike but in the opposite direction. We had problems with that section but it was because the intersection was farther then expected. We hiked it around Christmas and all the creek were flowing

That hike looked awesome too! And we wish there was flowing water. Only stagnant kind of nasty water 😭

My wife and I are heading to Alaska in May. Guess you all won’t be there yet. We are planning on going to Denali and Kenai Fjords. Question what hiking boots do you like? Another good video. Be safe.

We won’t be there until June. We hope you have a great trip! You can find a link to our gear in the pinned comment and in the description. 😃

You are tough but such a beautiful area. We also had trouble on a nearby trail with All Trails that was inaccurate. We carry a multi tool (kind of pliers) while hiking. It takes care of pulling out jumping cholla cactus.
@AdventuresofAplusK2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea!! We did have some tools, but need to keep them in a better spot in our packs.

'm going to suggest that an old fashioned paper USGS topographic map and compass may be better for navigating than a map on an electronic screen. You can take a compass bearing on a known point, like the Weaver's Needle, and know that you are along that line somewhere. Then take a bearing on another point you can identify on the map and where those two lines intersect, there you are. Also, you never have to worry about running out a battery or breaking something. Yes, I know I sound very old fashioned but there are times when the old analog methods are an improvement on the modern electronic options. The only disadvantage is the hassle of obtaining the paper maps versus downloading a map database into a device. I find it worth the difficulty versus the possibility of getting misoriented (lost) in difficult terrain such as a dry, unforgiving desert.

Thanks for the tip, it’s something we should look into. Thankfully we always knew which direction to go, just the route itself was tough.

Fantastic episode 👍🏻👍🏻 OMGoodness The dreaded cholla ball !! What makes them extra miserable is the fact the needles are serrated so they hurt as much coming out as they do going in. I’ll have to check out Little Miss BBQ in The Slope.

Wonderful video, thank you for sharing. It is hard to hike in the desert with a lot of weight, you managed that very well. I have been hiking/backpacking for 4 decades and I would recommend that you use a topo map, the phone will not always work well for navigation. The map has another advantage, it is a lot larger than the screen of the phone, much more fun to use.

We will have to look into how to use one!

One massive tip I have with backpacking alot in the desert is that if you're doing a loop trail and have the time to do so, hike in half way in advance to drop a water cache if you don't wanna hoof in all your water initially. Then on the hike out you can just tie the empty plastic jug to the outside of your pack. I also always write a message like "water cache (last name) for X DATE. Please call (emergency contact number) if not picked up by X DATE". I know it might sound like overkill but living in the desert has taught me to be a fanatic for water.

We have heard of this and know of people who have done this in west Texas! We unfortunately didn’t have the time to do so, but it’s a great idea.
@kayseacamp2 жыл бұрын
@@AdventuresofAplusK it definitely comes in clutch. Even though there have been times were I didn't fully need to tap my cache other ppl on trail needed to and I was able to share with them. Especially the fur babies.
