Hello from the top of New York: Mount Marcy at 5,344 feet!
Mount Marcy is located in the Adirondacks High Peaks Wilderness and while you can access the summit by a difficult 17 mile day hike, we decided to make our journey even harder and do a 19 mile backpacking trip along the Avalanche Pass to Mount Marcy Loop Trail, which meant we lugged 30ish pounds of gear up to the top with us. It was a tough journey full of so much mud, obstacles on the trail, and the CRAZIEST wind we have ever experienced, but the views at the top were 1000% worth all of the struggles to get there.
NOTE: Drones are NOT allowed in Wilderness areas. All drone footage in this video was filmed outside of the wilderness.

I grew up in the Ithaca area. Currently live in Ohio and took my wife and daughter to the Adirondacks for the first time last week, they’re in love. We hiked Whiteface which is more family oriented and not a true hike but still a lot of fun and something our 7 year old could do. The Adirondacks are so underrated imo.

Your family could easily do Mt Jo (only 600 ft elevation right atAdirondack Loj) and you will be blown away by the view. It's a front row seat for the highest peaks. Also Baxter off 73 is a very easy climb and inspires a lot of photos for calendars.

What a great backpacking trip! Kona did such an awesome job on those ladders! She is such a lucky girl to have you two as her mommy and daddy…you two rock! New York is home for me and I always love seeing videos from places close to home. The Adirondacks is my favorite place to be! I was actually at the Loj the same day you guys were, I hiked Algonquin on the same day you started your backpack trip. When you showed the shot of you guys walking back to your van I remember seeing your van there when I got back from my hike. If you’re ever back in the area I highly recommend doing Algonquin, it’s the 2nd highest in NY and you can summit three high peaks all in one hike!

@@AdventuresofAplusK Algonquin actually has better views than Marcy, if that's possible and is a much more accessaible and economic hike, (8 miles as opposed to your 18). If you really are up for a challenge , do the upper range (Gothics, Saddleback, Basin, Haystack.) If you can do only one, do Haystack. Views are beyond spectacular, rated by many as #1 in high peaks (Algonquin #2) but it's really back there.

This summer I joined the WNY(western New York) hiking challenge. It’s had me hiking 192 miles this summer. I finished the challenge last month, and was so excited to learn new trails. My favorite was the High Tor which overlooks Canandaigua Lake. The view plus a bonus waterfall made it so exciting. Next summer I’ll be traveling to the ADK for a little hiking adventure like you enjoyed. Thanks for sharing this:)

These are really splendid views from Marcy, especially of Haystack, the MacIntyre Range and the Great range. You had a very beautiful day. I climbed Marcy 6 times via the route you took, including Skylight on 5 of them. It is so much more interesting than the Van Hoevenberg trail, which we descended , except for the astonishing view at Indian Falls. We would swim in the Opalescent Brook on the way to Lake Tear. I always felt a chill at 4 corners. Back in the day ( 60's) there was a lean to there and never more than 10 cars in the Adirondack Loj parking lot.

Great job guys! This is such an epic hike. So hard, but awesome. This part of the year the wind is brutal; when we did it, below treeline was fine...lovely... above treeline is got cold, and on the peak with wind was like a knife cutting right though you. The Adirondack's are amazing...love Lake Placid area. A great way to climb some 46ers is snow shoe in the winter. Its beautiful, and its actually easier because the "trail" is smooth!

I've spent alot of time in the Adirondacks. Beautiful area. If you are in Central New York stop in Utica and try the food. It is amazing and the best in the country in my opinion. Upside down pizza, chicken riggies and halfmoon cookies are just an example of the area's food. The second oldest pizzeria in the U.S. is in Utica and the Utica Club brewery is the first brewery in America to sell beer after prohibition ended. A cool tour of the brewery and samples in the 1888 tavern are a must. Great beers and soft drinks. Check it out.

Major ❤ for ADK and to see it with a bit of 🍁🍂 is just awesome. Kona was all kinds of epic on that first ladder! The Adirondacks was where I had my first ever bear sighting. It was just after the campers left (so camp was quite quiet) and one got its hands (paws?) on a rubbish bag round the back of the mess hall. I was on my own and freaked out - so mighty glad to see you had the heavy duty bear containers. Whenever we took the kids hiking, it was never on any trails as cool looking as this one. It looked so varied with the ladders, ridges, walk ways and so on... but I wouldn't have appreciated all of that mud. At 16:26, it was really interesting to see how many people had marked just 1 person off, it looked like you two were the only non solo-ers! The first pizza sounded delightful, but you guys officially butchered it when you asked them to not include mushrooms! Sad that you don't have more videos from the area (for now) but excited to see Vermont. Hoping you guys put the van on the ferry across Lake Champlain as that will bring back some serious good memories for me!

Oh well, got to keep going, it keeps us young! My wife is from the Thousand Islands area of New York so I want to visit there and the Adirondacks some day. Thanks. That pizza sure looked good! My friend Harry and I years ago hiked the mountain at Flagstaff, AZ and when we got down, we both ordered a large pizza for each of us! That was how hungry we were! Congratulations on the high point - and on your 200th KZbin video! This was definitely worthy of #200. I'd like to thank you for all the tips you provided that made my recent Dakotas vacation a smashing success. Things you helped me to know about: Cathedral Spires, Black Elk Peak (I got my own high point, although it was in the fog, which was cool in its own way), Spearfish Canyon, Notch/Door/Window Trails, Pinnacles Overlook for sunset, Rankin Ridge at Wind Cave NP (tower is still closed), Painted Canyon at Theodore Roosevelt NP for sunset, the 18th floor of the North Dakota State Capitol, and the Juicy Lucy in Minneapolis (yes, you even helped me in a place you didn't film!). Things I added: Castle Trail in the Badlands, Devils Tower, Medicine Rocks in Montana, White Butte in North Dakota (make that two high points!), the amazing North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt NP (Caprock Coulee hike and Sperati Point both have incredible views), the Minnehaha Creek Trail from a waterfall to the Mississippi (only 2.5 miles from the Juicy Lucy), and Devil's Lake State Park in Wisconsin, which honors the America the Beautiful Pass because it's home to a unit of the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve. Thank you again for all the tips and inspiration! Bring on New England!

For us Wheeler Peak was equally difficult because there was snow and ice on the way up and it was COLD at the top--23 F and 27 mph wind. We didn't stay long. I like your post high-point summit tradition. My wife and I have a similar tradition with beer, salsa, and blue corn chips. I think the next high point for us might be Humphreys Peak in Arizona, but not in the winter. Enjoying your travels.

Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it. And Humphreys Peak looks awesome, that would be a good one and we hope to add that to the list someday. That weather you had on Wheeler Peak sounds brutal! Cold and wind at the summit makes it hard to enjoy the victory!

No drones ? Great !!! When I lived in the Adirondacks and walked around in the woods I just wanted me, the animals, and natural sounds. Back then seaplanes were banned on lakes in the Adirondacks. The Adirondack residents, people and animals, have learned to live together.

Years ago, in lateAugust, as part of a summer camp, I took 5-6 older boys with me as the hiking conselor and did the upper range, Gothics, Saddleback, Basin, Haystack (no Marcy). i did not lnow about the Saddleback Cliffs, which we descended. 20 miles one day. Not a cloud in the sky, pristine ( for some reason I always got good weather on hike days) and in the 70's. We celebrated after dark by going to the Dew Drop Inn in Saranac Lake for pizza. Best pizza ever!

Marcy via Van Hoevenberg is shorter but way less scenic. Algonquin is the more economical day hike but tough at the top. 8 miles round trip. A really good day hike is Cascade or Noonmark. Both are not easy but are not as high and are right off the road. Of course there is Mt Jo

I climbed Marcy when I wasn't in good enough shape. We started too late and it was September, so the days were short and we had to rush. We didn't stop to rest enough, so we pushed too hard. The trail was wet, so that made things interesting. By the time it was over, my legs were almost useless. While walking (actually hobbling) to dinner later in Lake Placid, a cop pulled over and asked if I needed a lift. I was probably walking as if I was really drunk. 😄 Meanwhile, a trail official went up and down the mountain twice, which made us feel even more amateurish. This was an everyday thing for her.

haha we had a similar experience hiking a tough trail today! Someone twice our age passed us 😂 we asked him "are we slow or are you fast? How often do you do this hike?" He said he does it twice a week. That made us feel a bit better! Marcy is a tough one!

I am currently an aspiring ADK 46er! These hikes are no joke! Glad you experienced one. There is never a shortage of mud, no matter the season! Trekking poles make all the difference on trails like these! Invest in a pair? AMAZON! LOL - They are known as "Adirondack miles" wayyyy different than your average mile. The hikes are no joke! They were so difficult with the terrain and elevation gain. Poles are kind of hard for us with needing our hands free for our pup and camera gear, but we may try them in the future. We loved the Adirondacks and can’t wait to come back. Great video! I love seeing the Adirondacks on youtube! I just got into the teens of the 46 high peaks...so far my favorites are Big Slide, Giant, and Nippletop, but I hear Dix mountain is a fan favorite sunrise view. Marcy was the first one I did, and to this point, I still think it was the easiest because it was so flat compared to my other summits 😂. The ADK's is no joke, and I will definitely watch more of your NE adventures like Vermont!! P.S. if you want some cool day hike recommendations, Indian Head Lookout is an easy hike, and AMAZING VIEWS year-round.

Congrats on hitting the teens! That is awesome!! We had hoped to do Indian Head and had permits to park, but since dogs aren't allowed and we couldn't find a sitter close enough we had to skip it, which we were SO bummed about because it was one of the top hikes we were excited about out east. Next time for sure!

Very cool video. Much has changed on that trail. Very rugged in the 1980's. My father, carried me most of the way up and down. There was a single lean-to shelter. Today, I tend to fast hike Marcy and Blue Mtn. Tourists rudely try to get selfies with...bears and feed wildlife. Dumb. Have noticed a couple trashy camp areas. No respect. And a few hot campfires. Only gonna take a dry season. Marcy, is great trial for Mt. Washington.

Many people from out West think the East Coast Mountains are not challenging. Many people have told me that they're more challenging in some ways. The one thing that sets the Mountains of NY, Vermont, NH, and Maine apart from other ranges in the US is WATER. Many lakes, rivers, and streams. Most lakes are glacial.

Nothing beats a big greasy cheeseburger after coming off any long hard climb and hiking trail, try it sometime. Love the Adirondacks, climbed many of the high peaks and trails, due for another peak soon. Great video, I love how you include facts and information in your videos, the research really comes through, you seem to have a knack for honing in on the key elements of a area and present it like you’ve been there many times before.
