All aboard! We have spent a few weeks in Durango, which is an awesome town with lots of history, beautiful scenery, and outdoor activities. But a huge part of Durango and its history is the railroad. We spent 5 hours riding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (Cascade Canyon Express tour), which was such a blast, and then finished with some of the best ice cream we’ve had in a long time in downtown Durango! 🚂

It’s been over 40 years since the last time I’ve been on that Durango to Silverton round trip. I’ll never forget it. My mother and I had a great two week trip. We buried my grandfathers ashes in a family plot in Ouray, he grew up there from 1905-1919. Looking forward to going back soon, after retirement.

I was not expecting this, but my goodness, I'm so pleased you did the train ride. The different gauges are fascinating. There's places in Europe where they have to swap mid journey, I know travelling between Poland and the Ukraine on the overnight sleeper, they swap the wheels so people say you can be woken. The scenery around the mountains was stunning and those trails at Cascade Canyon had a Yosemite feel to them ❤️ I love it when you guys throw a curve ball like this - bit like the via ferrata and horse riding vlogs out east 🙌

We road the train three years ago. It was cold and wet. The ride was still a lot of fun. We had a small rock slide across the tracks and had to wait two hours while the tracks were cleared. Our dog Penny had the time of her life when we were there. The dog sitter was supposed to take her out twice. Once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Instead she grabbed her from our Hotel and Penny spent the day touring Durango. When we would get cell coverage all kinds of pictures show up of Penny being the ultimate tourist. It was a great time.

You were right, that was GORGEous! Awesome excursion and experience. Great shots from the train which I am sure were challenging to obtain. Really enjoyed the history lessons at the beginning of the video too. If you ever make it to Skagway, Alaska they have a narrow gauge railroad too. The White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad. It runs from Skagway and up into the Yukon Territory of Canada. I only did a short trip up to White Pass but it was beautiful. Skagway is a neat town as well, very steeped in gold rush era history.

First time I rode the train was back in 67 with my grandparents. It was amazing as a 7 year old the impression it left with me. I finally went back in 17 and relived the experience and it did not disappoint!! Went again last year and was totally amazed again. I don’t think you could ever get tired of riding the train. 100 feet from you where you did your intro is Durango Bagel. Best Bagel ever !!! Sometimes I wish I lived there just for the bagels. Kathryn (I'm guessing it's you), I like how you respond to all our groupie posts (unless you and Adam split them: "My hand is cramping, your turn.") This was a good change of pace. So beautiful where you were in Durango, and my wife would love that train ride (seems like you took the shorter "Kona's-alone-in-the-room-all-day" ride). In fact, my grandfather would have gone ape over it. He was a train fanatic. Maybe that's why I love them a bit, too. Thanks for sharing, as always. Glad to see you smiling your way through this video as opposed to how your last video adventure ended (that muted "s**ofab****" look at the camera said it all). Peace out.

Hahah it's me (Kathryn)! I love to respond to everyone! Adam does read them all though 😄 And correct, we did the "Kona's-alone-in-the-room-all-day" ride lol! It was actually supposed to be 2 hours originally, starting from about halfway on the route, but they changed it to longer (for the same price!) and we are so glad they did. Trains are SO amazing and we are a bit hooked on them now! MUCH better day than the last adventure! Still hate that SOB who did this to us hahaha

I wish you could have been in Durango on the Durango, Silverton Railroad in the 1970’s , 1990’s before so much changed in that area. We went back there about 6 years ago, took the train again with my grandkids, and were sad to see how how much Durango has changed. So overcrowded and frustrating. . Even Mesa Verde looked so sad from the extensive fires in the area. It used to be so pristine and simply beautiful. I am sure you still enjoyed it. Glad we were able to experience our home state Colorado when it wasn’t so overcrowded. The rest of your trip beautiful! Thanks for sharing

Silverton is a really cool place and I loved the train! I went in the summer a few years ago also, but looks like photos in the winter on the train would be incredible! Loved your video!!!! ALSO, I watched one of your older videos when you were in Amarillo. In your travels, if you are returning to Texas going through Amarillo toward Wichita Falls on HWY 287, in a real small town called Chillicothe there is a small coffee shop (called "The Chillicothe Coffee Shop") I think you might enjoy. They have fantastic coffee and wonderful muffins. The owner is an artist who has some interesting art on the walls! You can't miss it - he has a very large rubrics cube outside on his patio! The place looks a little rough, but it is an interesting quick stop!

We love Silverton! We visited by vehicle instead of train and it's so cool! The winter train does look super beautiful as well. Thank you so much for the coffee shop tip, we hope our route goes that way so we can try it out!

You've scored another video shooting, editing, and narrating triumph! Thank you. Wife and I rode the D&SNGRR in 2002, and loved it as much as you did, except we did the all day thing, which was way too much. Silverton is a cool town, but you saw the railroad's highlights. I also love the way you guys review junk food while you eat it! Keep up your great work and safe travels, always.

Thank you so much! We were very excited to put this video together. We agree on the length, we loved the shorter length of Cascade Canyon Express. We visited Silverton by vehicle and are glad we had more time there than just a short layover!

New viewer and subscriber. Came across your Mesa Verde vlog last night. It's one of my favourite places, so just had to watch. Subbed right after it ended 😸 Loved this one. I love Durango, Dolores, Cortez, Silverton, and Ouray. Such a great place to visit. You make me want to go again. Looking forward to catching up on up on your channel. I live in Southern Utah and see a lot of vlogs from around here 💕 Happy to have found you.

A great heritage railroad for sure ! Yet a better one quite near is the Cumbres - Toltec line, which runs from Antonito in southern Colorado, over the hills to Chama in northern New Mexico just over the border. This is NOT to say do this one instead, rather do both eventually on different trips. Its an all day excursion and a road coach takes you rapidly back to Antonito where you've left your car. There are depots at each end. For hotels the night before I suggest staying at Alamosa, a half hour north of Antonito if you can't get something decent in the somewhat limited Antonito. For the night following your railroad day I suggest staying in one of the charming small places in Chama and enjoy the depot after breakfast before moving on with your trip. The Cumbres - Toltec train has both ordinary seating and a choice of several special parlor cars, plus open wagons but unlike the one in this video, its really totally open with no roof, just sides as a safety barrier up to your waist. I paid for a fancy parlor car but spent a lot of time out in the open. Its worth having the fancy car to go back and forth to though. There's a food car too. I suggest going at a time of year when you are both likely to get blue skies and also see colourful foliage e.g. early October. I suggest doing the Durango - Silverton line on another trip covering a different itinerary. The general area of the inland south-west certainly has enough to make at least two trips out of, if not many. Alot one of these two heritage railroads on each circuit you make up. Its great to have such an experience in each such trip. For the Cumbres - Toltec I had come down in a general line from Denver doing various scenic and touristic things in southern Colorado before going into New Mexico then the north east corner of Arizona then a wide circuit in New Mexico including Carlsbad Caverns and the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, then back to Denver for my flight home.

Ok, I'm sold! Haven't been to Durango and I know we would love it! Maybe in the fall when the leaves are changing. I know it's a lot of pine forest but there are deciduous trees too, right? Might even do the ice cream thing : ) Leaving next weekend to go to Wahpeton, ND. Have never been to ND, so checking off another state. Norm will be teaching a carving class up there so thought we would also check out Fargo while we're there. Ever been?

Forty two years ago Aug. my wife Annette and I honeymooned in Durango and Silverton and rode the Silverton Train both ways. The train at the time was still a part of the D&RGW, it still ran one freight car for the folks in Needleton and the cabins along the way. We spent our 25th at the Wyman(built in 'o4) in Silverton. We get back whenever we can. Beautiful country and fascinating history.

I would like to take this train ride in the near future. I have been doing research on this and people are saying you get full of soot by the time you arrive back. They say it’s beautiful but just a lot of soot. Did you find this to be the case? What car number did you ride in? Thank you.

Hi Lisa! Since they changed to fuel for the steam vs. coal, you no longer get soot-y! And we were 30 or 31 I think, the last car, but they assigned us to it (we weren't able to pick)

There is a food/beverage car on the train so they don’t make stops specifically for that. The ride we were on we only stopped at Cascade Canyon then turned around. I’m not sure about byob. You’d have to call and ask them on that one. We hope you have a great trip!

Someday, I'll get to the scenic railroads across the country like the Durango And Silverton. I saw they're converting their engines from coal to oil. Probably for cost and environmental concerns, and oil is less maintenance intensive than coal.

We hear that a fire was caused by the coal, so that was a big reason to switch to oil.
