Adventures With Purpose

Күн бұрын

On the morning of March 3, 2024, Melissa Diane Nichols left her home in Springfield, Oregon, driving her gold Toyota Camry, and was never seen again.
She left behind only a brief, cryptic note, and by that evening, she was reported missing. Days passed without any word from her, raising alarm among her family and friends. With few leads and even fewer clues, local authorities had little to go on. As the days turned to weeks, the chances of finding Nichols alive seemed to fade.
AWP, known for investigating cold cases took on the challenge of finding Melissa. Equipped with advanced sonar imaging technology, they specialize in cases where traditional resources may not suffice, bringing closure to families by uncovering answers lost beneath the water’s surface.
The team began their search at Fern Ridge Reservoir, a logical starting point in the area where Nichols was last seen. Their experience and advanced technology allowed them to comb through large sections of the lake with precision. Using Side Imaging sonar, casting s a 75-foot span on either side of their boat, they searched for any sign of a submerged vehicle. Down Imaging provided additional clarity, helping the team distinguish between natural debris and potential evidence on the lake bed. Each shadow, each shape coming into view on the sonar display represented a possibility, and the tension grew with every scan.
Throughout their investigation, the team’s approach was both methodical and compassionate. Guided by years of experience, they worked under the assumption that Nichols’ vehicle might have ended up in the water, pushed by either misfortune or personal choice. Each potential find was carefully examined, but time and again, the submerged shapes proved to be nothing more than logs or rocks, eerie reminders of other searches they had conducted. Yet they pressed on, refusing to leave any location unchecked.
Despite the lack of physical evidence, the team’s search was not without an emotional toll. Cases like Nichols’ often involve personal anguish, leaving family and friends in prolonged uncertainty. The divers shared how, over the years, they’ve helped families understand the pain left behind by such cases. While initially hesitant to tackle cases involving potential self-harm, the team has since come to believe in the value of their work, knowing that it may even deter others in crisis from making irreversible decisions.
As the search progressed, a new lead surfaced: Melissa Nichols’ car had been found abandoned in an intersection near 42nd and Marcola in Springfield, just a short distance from her home. This unexpected discovery, made on the same day she disappeared, shifted the focus of the investigation entirely. With the car’s location identified and no longer believed to be underwater, the team’s search concluded knowing that Melissa would no longer be in the area if she did jump into the river.
On June 1st, Melissa's was found in the river, 20 miles down stream near Junction City, Oregon.
"Every time we go out there, we hope to bring families the answers they’ve been waiting for. But sometimes, closure doesn't come easy. We can only search, give it our all, and hope that our efforts can bring some peace, even if we can't bring them home." - Jared Leisek (Founder of AWP)

I love how AWP brings closure to families. My sister took her life 20 years ago. No note. I suffer from severe depressive disorder. I'm on meds and I promised my brothers I wouldn't go that way. A promise I'm working hard to keep.

I used to think suicide was selfish until a couple of months ago, alot of things happened all at once something snapped in and between my brain and heart like a twig. I was in the mind set not one person cares. At a routine doctor check up he picked up on my disposition had changed, so I told him all the low down, he gave me the right medication. Now I understand it is not selfish if you are so depressed your mind is in such a dark hole, you don't even realize it yourself until someone cares enough to get you the correct help you need . I owe my life to him. I Thank the doctor who I have had for 30 years or so. Thank you all for all you do for people and families.

It's very easy to not understand until you are in the thick of it yourself. Depression is quite literally a disease that robs you of everything in life, and a suicide attempt is a side effect.

I am a friend of Melissa, I reported this to AWP within the same week she went missing. I had mentioned that she was missing WITHOUT her car, they had told me that unfortunately they don’t look for missing persons without their cars. She didn’t have a husband or a child, her brother lives in Alaska and her mom had died less than a year before she went missing. I don’t know if his team never relayed that information or what but they knew almost immediately that she was without her car.

I lost my mom in 2007 to suicide. I have had plenty of time to think and I'll say it's NOT selfish. For me to think of how I feel....when she was the one hurting so bad. That is the definition of selfish. O..how'd it make me feel or what about me? It has nothing to do with us and she wasn't in her right mind. Compared to what we go though , it's nothing compared to what someone who thinks this is their last resort feels. ❤😂🎉 I love watching you guys bring closure for others

I know it's not what the family was hoping for but at least they can be put to rest and they don't have to worry anymore. My condolences go out to her family for their loss! RIP Melissa Nicholes 🙏💐🕊️

If they’re taking a video about something, he said I bet diamond the dollar is probably one of his old teammates that reported the shit or it’s an ex AWP watcher and subscriber when he ended up going to court overall that there was a lot of people that left and started following Doug and the other teammates now I myself do watch Doug into my knowledge day, ended on somewhat amicable terms for the most part I don’t see him bad mouthing Jared into me that shows exactly how adult he is now the other filmmaker badmouth him a lot and that’s why I just choose not to watch his channel because there’s always two sides to every story and although he ended up in court, I find it ironic that someone came forward years later to say all this in the height of his career when his channel was really starting to make a lot of money Nobody really knows the circumstances other than what’s public, so it was sad when the whole team separated went their own ways, but I also understand the other team members and why they left as a parent. I might’ve made that same decision, but I still wouldn’t be surprised if the old film member Josh I think his name was if I remember correctly, I would have to look I wouldn’t be surprised if it was him or one of his followers that complained about whatever wording was being used, people are really petty and childish

I HATE when people say it's"selfish." As someone who deals daily with mental health, nobody can understand unless you've been there yourself. The brain doesn't allow you to think of anything good and you can't think about anything else, it's impossible, so to say that they are selfish is so aggravating. All they want to do is stop the daily pain. There is nothing selfish about it.

When I was in that situation I really thought if I could not cope with the trauma/ptsd I was suffering from and chose to check out, it would be passing that unresolved trauma onto my family and I simply could not face that possibility. In my opinion: Choosing to un-alive is NOT selfish. What would be "selfish" is staying alive for others. People who choose this and succeed in it are in so much pain, mental or physical, they just no longer can take it. It would be cruel to allow somone who truly wants it to continue because of your own feelings. Those that follow through with it have thought about it. Yes, there are some that are quick to decide but overall its not just a spur of the moment thing. They deserve to be found just as any accident or crime victim.

Sometimes, it might be just that. They have had enough and just no longer want to deal with their world or situation. This is only my opinion. As a Mom, I may be wrong. The town of Chimney Rock is now sitting in the bottom of Lake Lure. Cadaver dogs are hitting on whole valleys. I don't know if any of the states have this option but here in Ontario Canada, assisted suicide is legal. If you have a painful, debilitating disease with no cure & no treatment available, you can apply for assisted suicide. There's alot of paperwork & meetings with doctors & family before the decision is made Some patients are denied. I know someone who was approved. Only had days left to live in excruciating pain. This person was literally full of cancer. They waited too long to go to their family doctor & when hospitalized for something else, this person was diagnosed with several end stage cancers. It was devastating. Their team of doctors & surgeons fast tracked the approval. Middle of the night, we got the call that it was approved & had already been carried out. I hope other countries & states adopt this law so people who are suffering, like my loved one was, have an option.

Depression is treatable. Even if you are suicidal, the doctors won't approve assisted suicide. The patient must have a deadly disease that is excruciatingly painful, not curable. Depression has successful treatments. @@gustaafargoan

I think most people who have taken themselves away from this earth have mental illnesses and they don’t realize what it does to family and friends once they do it. But I am happy you took on this case and thank you for helping all these other families find there loved ones ❤❤❤

Suicide is absolutely not a selfish act. It's well known that in the moment of Suicide the individual is in a very lucid and coherent mindset.

Whatever happened to the case you showed maybe 4 months ago about a nurse who's vehicle was found by police but said the current was too strong to recover? You went and found the Suv in the river but was only down about 10ft and current wasn't too strong. I believe you were heading back north to Oregon from California? Her friends were also at the site with you. I believe you lived streamed it and your wife said something to you about maybe don't stress out because you were angry at the police.

The local recovery team got the vehicle out , , but they already knew she was not in the vehicle , after another diver , dived on the vehicle , using a rope , and said 100% she's not in the vehicle .

I’ve been struggling with self harm lately I have gone thru things I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy from being a dmv/ sa survivor to being stabbed to held hostage to loosing my daughter at 7 months pregnant due to dmv and latley been feeling the need to go away and no longer be here. Then I won’t feel the things I feel now . Not one person will even notice I’m gone, or care for that matter 🥺

Thanks for talking about suicide and the impact it has on families. I do think suicide is a selfish action in that it only passes the pain onto others and personally, knowing how much pain others would be in if I took my own life is what stopped me from doing so. But I don’t think a person who commits suicide is a selfish person. Most people don’t realize that many times depression is very similar to paranoia or psychosis. Emotionally, you’re convinced that everybody hates you and the world would be better off without you, even if you rationally know people would miss you. Often times people who are depressed to the point of feeling suicidal are not of sound mind, and I don’t think that morals apply in the same way in those cases. To anyone struggling with feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, despair, or suicidal ideation, please know you are loved and that you can get better. Please don’t be afraid to ask for help, there are many more than willing to give it ❤

My husbands family owned the two filbert orchards (before most of those homes were built until a few years ago) on the left and right hand side of harvest lane before you had to take that hard right to harvest landing.

♥️ from Tromsoe, Northern Norway, I love watching your videos. What happened to the Christina Murphy- case a couple of months ago? Has she been found yet? And I’ve also been wondering about the Savannah - what was her last name again?- it was a missing persons case from Kansas. Are you going back there to do some more searching? ❤❤

I don’t know what people who are alone go through. I am 60 and am very lonely even though I live in an active 55+community but 2 daughters live in other cities, 1 of them clear in Virginia where I am in Washington state. My 3rd daughter lives in the same town but doesn’t drive and I’m not in the best of health. If all of that isn’t enough, I lost my service dog, Rue after having her for 11 years in December. It would be easy to end things but even though I don’t see my girls very often, I still have them to think of and I wouldn’t do that to them.

Don't give up. Take a few moments every day to enjoy and appreciate the wonders around you - even if it's just watching a squirrel goof off in the yard or crows barking at each other on power lines, just breathe, take it in...as Spring approaches, look for the wonderful signs of life returning, little bits of green peeking thru, the early blooms. Find a group in your community to join - in real life, not behind a screen...don't care what it is, what interests you? Find others who are also interested....

To you yes, but its not about your family or their wants. Its what's either best for that person or a irrational solution to the problem. Its easy to judge, yes? Because you just did it, but never, ever tell someone what is best for them

In my opinion I just don't think anyone would off himself by drowning.. Not only would you have a huge chance to get scared and back out, but to me it's one of the worst ways to go. People say it's peaceful, I couldn't imagine drowning. I'm a firefighter and I would prefer to burn, because quickly you're nervous system would shut down and then you would no longer feel anything.. of course I would never choose to burn Period...

I don’t think of people who take their own lives as being selfish or as being cowards etc.. these people fight to live daily in pain… when this happens they are in so much pain that they can no longer deal with it my younger brother is one of these people he fought for years to live and then we lost our Dad and his world went into a tailspin because he was our world… we adored him… my little brother was biologically my cousin but my parents had adopted him as young child because his own parents were a murder/ and later unaliving situation so he had a hero worship thing with my Dad… and he was having marital problems because of his mental health issues that he wouldn’t seek treatment for because he didn’t want to lose his concealed weapons license 😢 but he had been fighting through this for years and then he came home early from work to an empty house thinking his kids would be spending the night at their grandparents so his wife would be the only one to find him and I think that was done out of anger on his part… he took some rope and then he put it around his neck and you know the rest but… unfortunately, my niece and nephew were both right behind their Mom when she opened the door to the room where he was 😢 and then there are those who knew my brother who think it was accidental because they think given his personality and the amount of weapons he owned if he had done it himself it would have been a much messier scene… I don’t know what to think if I’m being honest.. I just know I miss him and if he did it then he did it… it doesn’t matter how it happened the way I feel is the same.. I miss him 💔💔💔
