Brian Moriarty (Wishbringer, Trinity, Loom) recounts the strange, convoluted and often hilarious story of how an unabridged video of his 2002 Game Developer’s Conference lecture ‘The Secret of Psalm 46’ became the ultimate Easter egg in Jonathan Blow’s acclaimed puzzle-adventure game The Witness (2016). It provides unique insight into the mystery of creative passion, and serves as a dramatic demonstration of the artistic influence game designers can exert on future generations.

The fact that it has been 8 years since I played through The Witness on the day of its release, and I still vividly remember the island as if it were my own backyard, is truly an achievement. I don't think a more perfect video game will ever exist. I hope I'm wrong, but considering how few people are even trying, I doubt it is the case.

After having a personal experience with The Witness that so closely mirrors Brian's (without his personal element), I can truly say that his telling of his experience with the game moved me to tears. The Witness is, to this day, the closest thing to a religious experience I have ever experienced, and it, as a work of art, has permanently transformed me. Thanks Brian, for such beautiful words of a truly awesome experience.

Maybe it's because I'm a religious Jew, but I found many of the audio tapes underwhelming. They were interesting, but they were missing a certain possibility in their considerations, like they precluded the option that G-d might communicate with man and therefore that the movement of knowledge isn't necessarily a blind man stumbling in the dark trying to find some smidgen of truth, but that there is a light source to illuminate the truth. So as a result all of those musings were interesting but irrelevant.

I've found that, at any given time, about half of the tapes in the game feel completely irrelevant. Which ones depends on who's playing.
