I'm not much of a poker player. And I haven't kept up with advances in poker theory so where I could hold my own in 1/2 15 years ago, I get eaten alive even on bad online sites now (like sportsbook sites with poker as an afterthought). I will say this, however. I used to play Magic: the Gathering competitively and I tracked data for opening hands and land draws vs. expectations at tournaments because I felt like I was getting consistently unlucky. And the data showed that, yes, indeed, I was consistently unlucky and consistently unlucky over long periods of time. Not that I never drew better than expected, but I drew worse than expected far more frequently. I really dislike the term variance. I recognize its usefulness; people almost invariably think they're better at literally everything than they actually are. But variance comes with the implication that over time, the upswing and the down swings even out. And while this is *generally* the case, it's still a bell curve and you still have that small minority of people who get shat on by lady luck repeatedly and the flip side, people that trip into a pile of shit and come up holding a diamond every time. If you have 2 million people flipping 100 coins, 1 of then is going to flip the same face all 100 times. I think it's important to recognize that some people are luckier than average and some are less lucky. And that may go in streaks but sometimes those streaks are decades or lifetime long. That having been said, I agree that there's no good way to strategize around chance. You can't just fold your aces preflop because you lose with them more often than you should statistically. You still have to play the optimal game, not the outcome based game. The only real advice you can give to a truly unlucky player is to stop playing games where luck is an element.

Best comment on this subject I have ever seen. I have a hand history of over 430,000 hands and I only in 41.7% of my pre flop flips. Also only hit my flush draws around 23% of the time when seeing turn and river. Villains make flushes against me 39.7% when seeing the river card. I get half a million hands is not a huge sample but that would be most players life time amount of hands if played live. Not saying I’ve never ran good or even god mode but over the long run I get absolutely crushed by my rv vs my ev

I really don’t know whether to get back into poker or not for this reason. I can build stacks if I play extremely conservatively. But like you say, it’s a slow slow progress. The last time I played I went all-in three times in one day. Each time I had at least 85% chance of winning the hand and got beat on the river EACH time. Wiped me out completely! But with a fair bit already invested into the pot at the time and such a strong hand each time, no good poker play will tell you to fold. The crushing blow to see that random 7 or something on the river, THREE TIMES IN A ROW, absolutely demoralises you

Excellent advice Alec. Some time ago, I started spending at least a third of the time I would normally spend at the tables, looking back at my hands using software like Poker Copilot. When I did that, I realised that my AA do hold up 80% of the time and so I'm not unluckier than anyone else. By analysing my hands, I also realised that for those tournaments when I felt like I was busted out by a bad beat and wasted my time, actually, what happened was either that I just played the hand badly or if it was a genuine bad beat, I was dominated stack-wise by the villain - and very often the reason why my stack size wasn't big enough to survive the bad beat was because I had played so many hands badly up to that point.

This really clears things up for me. To win all I need do is fold all AA, KK, QQ pairs pre-flop, fold all sets, flush and straight draws after the flop and then find a better way to spend my time and money than poker.

Bad luck? Three times this year I was involved in a hand where 3 players flopped a flush!! The first time it happened, I flopped the 2nd nut flush and lost a $2,200 pot. The second time, I flopped the nut flush and collected a $900 pot. The third time, I flopped an ace high flush vs a king high flush and a flopped straight flush!! On the river, I cracked the straight flush by making a higher straight flush!!! Since then, I barely even notice bad beats anymore because cracking a straight flush on the river is the worst possible beat you could put on anybody! It's like I've been vaccinated against bad beat anger!! Yippee!!

If you're playing the live $1/$2, and you're playing only big pairs, big suited aces, and flopped sets where you limped or called along with a medium pair, and you still can't win, then it means you lack the discipline to bet-fold. When you make the nuts the hand plays itself. What separates the winners from the losers is the discipline to get out of the way when you face aggression from Old Guy after you've been waiting an hour for those tens. If old guy bets into you, it doesn't matter that you have an overpair, because Old Guy is not capable of floating you and therefore he has the nuts. Your win rate should be so massive in these games that it's really hard to run *that* bad for even for a month.

This is what is currently killing me in pretty much every tournament I have ever entered: Starting off well, building a decent stack with good cards. Make it to the 5th or 6th rounds maybe further and the blinds are getting big and the cards go ice freaking cold. The stack starts to dwindle and I am getting blinded out until I am forced to go all in and get felted. That seems to happen every time. Granted it is happening later and later as I improve my game, but how do you stay alive when you are on a table with lots of big stacks who call everything and are running well? This is my last piece of the puzzle. If I can figure out how to break through this part of the game, I believe 100% that I can start to win. So, again, blinds going way up, cards are dead (NO pairs, NO over cards, No good flops for hours) and table big stacks constantly raise ridiculous amounts when you manage to get into a hand with the best garbage you have had in a while. Is there an answer to that one besides get lucky?

Honestly you can run real bad in the long run for a year. This year has been so ridiculous for me in hold em. I have had a month or two total of decent luck. The other ten months were just running terrible. Im broke right now and the last few times I have played 1-2 I have lost with all 3 top sets I flopped. Only pair over 9s dealt in 3 sessions was KK. Flopped top set and lost. So Alec is not touching on the fact that the universe is fucked up. When you need to win money is when the universe will not let you win. When you are a millionare loving life, the math probably will work out fine. Law of attraction.

There is a third possibility, I know Alex and Doug Polk have some beef, but I will remember a number of things Doug has said that we’re “Aha!” moments for me. One was that you may perceive yourself to have bad luck, but you’re simply too predictable of a poker player. The example I remember that Doug mentioned was the poker player that was complaining that his pocket Kings would run into Aces a lot. Well, if you’re only ever 4 bet jamming with AA and KK, and opponents notice this, they will just fold anything but AA to you. So when you get called you’re always crushed, even with the 2nd best hand in poker. You might just be too predictable, and failing to notice this, along with some memory selection bias might contribute to the feeling that you are “unlucky” when you are simply readable.

After playing around 700k hands and having the impression that im constantly unlucky I moved to GGPoker where software allows you to see if you are running bad or good (im not talking about all in ev, you can check if you are running good or bad in all of the hands you played). I played another 500k hands there and not even for a second was my luck avarage. Half a million hands with constant "bad run" as software names it. So you actually can be unlucky all the time over large samples. I start to believe you can run bad for millions of hands which means you can lose for years and years altough playing better than your opponents. On the other hand I was looking at a player which seemed to be always lucky. He drew my attention and I started actually writing down all of his all ins that I got to see. He played on my stakes for about one month and then moved up. During that month I never saw him loosing an all in, even when he had 20-30% equity and I saw tens of those all ins. After another month I saw him move up again. Thats how you turn pro, you play somewhat well and you are lucky. Playing well even over large samples is just not enough .
@ronaldbarnes1746
@ronaldbarnes1746 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. A good player who runs well can move up the ranks very quickly. A bad player who runs well can move up very quickly but eventually statistics will bring him back down. But a great player who runs bad for a long period of time never has a chance to move up. I am a good player and online I was killing it. I moved up in $$ and had the worst run in about a year of playing. I kept track also. My "problem" was going all in with the nuts and getting out drawn. It was pretty amazing. All in pre-flop with AA and getting set mined. Flopping nut straight and then being all in and getting out drawn with a flush. Getting nut flush and then going all in and getting out drawn with a full house. And set over sets where I have top set and getting out drawn. If you love the game continue to play for the love of the game. But if you are playing for $$ only then bad luck and the poker Gods will make sure you never win.

Completely agree with your points. In fact, adding to your point about winning with say aces being emotionally neutral, I would suggest that even when we get it in with aces we still have to sweat the action. When they hold, you're absolutely right, easily forgotten, but there was still a slight emotional drain fading the bad beat. Then add big drain when the fish who called with J9o catches his gutter, and it's a short hop to "I never win." I'll admit I've had to work really hard to not get emotionally invested in any hand, and swallowing the bitter pill in the harsh light of day, sometimes the reason I got unlucky is that I put myself in that spot with a marginal play.

Nice work. Good philosophical take. I would add this feeling manifests much more with "tight" players. They're only playing premium hands, and it appears unjust that their Aces get cracked with J-9 off. Players with wider ranges can comfort themselves remembering when non-premium starting hands prevailed, understanding variance is a 2-way street.

Pokerstars site was it, and after 2 weeks, 200 hands of both were played, results were 157/43 on 80/20% and 131/69 on 70/30. Never again paid attention to bad luck, just moving on and playing best i can. Even tho, 70/30 situations on PS are more 62/38 there or 65/35. Inducing bad players to stay on site is reasonable thing to do if you are biggest site in the world.

What you would do? I bet you fold to every situation and claims to be right. You talk a lot but gives blank statements. I can tell you dont know what to do in the game, and if Someone fails, you say, "go check the video", thats what someone who doesnt know shit says

I remember I had two kings, and had a four of a kind, so I went all in, everyone else folded except one girl, (the fact that a girl bested me kissed me off even more) she went all in as well, I was winning until the river came and turns out she got a royal flush and took all my $20,000 worth of chips. Am I unlucky or just bad?

I don't consider myself a good player, but the big problem I find is my all in ev. Specifically all ins pre flop. I've kept notes for months because a friend told me to do so. I was all in pre flop 67 times. I was ahead 48 of those times. All together I won 11 times. I admit I'm not a great player but I am decent enough. I learn things and apply them as best I can. It's just this one aspect of the game which happens to be the reason I'm a losing player. I am able to make money playing my game, but when I have an all in situation, I almost never win. I thought I was very unlucky and then decided to keep track of my hands. 11/67 wins all in when I'm ahead 48 times is quite ridiculous. Does anybody have any advice?

Nah, sorry but my luck is statically proven to be worse than average over the long run. I remember always being unlucky my whole life with games of chance, but decided to give poker another try tonight. Out of over 100 hands, I only got a pair in 6 of them. Only had a two pair a single time. And never had the of a kind once. Got knocked out with KQ suited to 83 off suit. Perfect ending and waste of $225. Only misplayed two hands the whole time, but no amount of skill or bluffing can overcome chronic misfortune.

It would be nice if someone actually addressed this question instead of just saying "you're delusional. It's not really happening." No, it is happening. I literally never get any pocket cards that are playable and when I do, they never connect with the flop. It's very difficult to play when you have effectively zero equity, but I'm trying to find ways to beat it regardless by bluffing and picking your spot.

when i started playing online i was playing 1 or 2 tables max and when i got a bad beat it basically ended the day for me. And then i realised that playing 4 or more tables actually helped me to not think about a bad beat because i had other actions to take on the other tables. So yeah maybe it will be helpful to someone

really thank you for the example with the backdoor flush v set...today I lost all my money in that sort of situation and honestly i was pissed. I started blaming the game and bad luck. But then i said to my self that when I played the hand I knew he or she had the flush but I kept on betting..So yeah maybe next time i might play it differently. :)

Luck is definitely the reason I’m losing lol, Last four times I played poker in a card room I got such bad runouts. I had KK vs some donk who shoved 42hh and lost. Had a set of 2’s vs top pair and back door flush draw, flush gets there. Flopped the nut straight against top two and lost, and lost aces vs kings

How’s this for bad luck. Sat at a $1/$2 table for 7 hours. Literally only got 7 winning hands. And four of those I folded preflop because they were 9/2 or 10/3 or J/6 all off suit hands. Lost $400 from calling $10 to $20 bets preflop and NEVER CATCHING a pair or if I did catch a pair my opponents had bigger pairs or straights, flushes quads boats straight flushes. Abs I’m not lying about my opponents hands. They were all catching good hands. Except me!!! That’s bad luck bro!!! Or unless the poker room I play at has workers playing the tables and they are cheating players out of their money. But I doubt that.

First, thanks for the video and the advice! Glad to hear I'm not the only never lucky player out there. Second, I've been playing for about 10 months and have noticed a flaw in my play that I'd like your two cents on. At the table, I find it far more difficult to build my stack than to lose it and I often lose all of my progress from a single mistake or bad beat. It's frustrating to watch hours of work go to waste and I wonder if you might have any advice for me

Hi Alec.... I'm an amateur trying to learn. The biggest issue I am struggling to deal with, my bad luck it seems, I go hand after hand flop after flop, I go for hours, without hitting the board. I focus on playing in position betting appropriately. I get AK and completely miss with aggressive players. I play connectors or suited connectors....1 gappers etc. I get nothing on the board not even close. But I'll fold J3 OS and watch J33 flop out kind of thing. On the plus side, I'm getting pretty good at bluffing. I get blinded to death trying to play playable hands. Any way just wondering what you do when you don't seem to be connecting? If you have that issue. Cheers.

Lost to a girl and reloaded 8 times to beat her today, i won back 70% of the entire cash we both cumulatively had at one point but i couldn't bust her and eventually lost it allxD i was hella tilted since i kept my large cash for a small amount of time as she was hella aggressive and kept getting stupidly strong cards like 80% of the time period we played. Thanks for this vid, really recaliberated my mindset again.
