They say you can freeze any one of his films at any second, put a frame around it and hang it on a wall. Precision and beautiful framing, staging and shot composition. The master of mise en scene.

Splendid, indeed! ...and yet, and yet...arguably most memorable: Lawrence atop the railway car... The frozen field outside the house in 'Zhivago.' The sea storm in 'Ryan's Daughter'.

David Lean has been my favorite motion picture director, ever since i discovered and started watching and seeing, hearing and feeling his provocatively gorgeous films both intimate and panoramic, forty years ago. David Lean often along with exquisitely talented cinematographer Freddie Young and master composer Maurice Jarre. They're the ultimate cinematic trinity.

Just before the explosion at the end of Bridge on the River Kwai, William Holden's character is felled by a bullet as he attempts to salvage the situation. When the woman he loves sees it from the hill above and leaps to her feet, it's one of the most beautiful things I've seen in my life.

those 'ryan's daughter'' shots by the sea is heart wrenchingly beautiful.doctor zhivago, which i only managed to watch yesterday has so many astonishing long shots, and the epicness, the exhausting epicness of the story is superior to any war and peace. long shots were david lean's speciality. he could have done a lot of westerns to be sure. i don't like david lean's cinematography in close up dialogues as it conforms to the style of the 1950s, as does the thighly theatrical shakespearign delivery of the lines in those very very clipped queen's english accents.the beach shot in ''ryan's daughter'' arecomposed like an old photo i have of my mother as a young adult on holiday in france. that's what using real celluloid gives you-a painterly quality, where the colours blend together smoothly, rather than the pixellated rubbish of digital film, passage to india has so many wonderful freeze moment, and i literally do freeze david lean films or wind back to freeze a shot i adore.

Beautiful collection of images! But at 1-2 seconds per shot I just did not have time to appreciate each image properly. It was a bit like sprinting through the Tate Gallery. I gave up after one minute. Sorry!

This video, though it is good, would work even better if you remove the film titles in the corner. Better to list the titles at the end. That's just my opinion. Hope you make more.
