How can we get our students to lead and monitor their own journey towards critical or strategic thought? Every student has a different approach to learning. As teachers, it is important that we create clear and consistent activities that allow our students to think about how they are thinking and learning. We want students to intentionally reflect on: (1) their desired outcome when beginning a lesson, (2) their approach and process while working toward the lesson objectives, and (3) what they learned and how they can work more effectively to obtain their desired end-of-lesson outcomes. In this session, we will participate in metacognitive activities that can help students examine their own problem-solving approaches while also developing their language skills. We will also discuss ways to embed these activities in our diverse classrooms, empowering students to monitor their own development into critical thinkers.
