It's extremely common here in America that K-9 officers keep their dogs after they retire.

He will. K9 dogs live with their handlers when on active duty, after retirement they continue the home life. I live in Fargo, we just retired another good one last year. The same thing took place.

Obviously the handler knows what's best for the dog and exactly how to control them in any given situation and I'm sure they enjoy retirement as a family dog. How long do the dogs usually work until they retire?

Both dogs did amazing. I fell in love with falco but dex wouldn't let his partner out of his sight. You could tell he wasnt leaving his side even when he could clearly move ahead and just wait. That rope course is what made the difference between who won

That is a lot harder than it looks. Great partnerships. Amazing dogs. I cannot imagine having a canine companion for eight years and having to retire. You can hear the Officer's voice catch. I am happy Falco team won. Dex is half his age and will rise still more.

I saw Dax a couple years back when I was in elementary school, it was super impressive to see a dog hang on to a person with his teeth and I knew from that moment to never mess with police dogs since they will mess up your arm. That was a super cool day in school for me!

Rest in peace Dax 2015-2024 Dax was one of my local sheriff departments k9, here is a small summery of what happened. K9 Dax, a ten-year-old member of the Lake County Sheriff's Office, passed away shortly after his retirement. He retired following a neck and spine injury sustained while pursuing a suspect, which led to paralysis. Diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), Dax couldn't return to duty despite physical therapy. Over his career, which began in 2015, Dax and his partner, Deputy John Forlenza, located over 400 missing people, apprehended criminals, and seized drugs, firearms, and vehicles. His passing was announced two days after his official retirement ceremony.
