I also saw it on CCTV back in the day. The Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle, Pa. He wrestled a technical style that was safer than a lot of what you see today, and especially what you saw in the 90s and early 2000s. Today a wrestler like Steamboat would be forced to do a lot more high risk moves. In the 80s with the technical style, Steamboat could make an arm drag look like a signature move.

I didn't realize the match was this detailed but to remember everything in your mind and then having the pressure to perform and literally physically act out what you had written down in a physical way, you would have to be to the greatest to pull It off. This goes down as the greatest wrestling match in the history professional wrestling. I hope one day if we ever send something off in a spaceship to talk about what professional wrestling is this is the match that should be sent on tape or dvd just like how they sent Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode to outer space.

@The Duke phenomenal the Tully and Magnum Match was as well it's great to know others remember and put that match up in their tops as well:) I started attending Live shows in 98 as Austin became my hero.. Him and Ultimate Warrior were my 2 all time favs! The shows I went to were a Raw in Worcester Mass when Rock came out and challenged Taker, Rock wore a nice Blue dress shirt, and Austin came out at the end might've even been when Raw was off air he came out and gave a 2 armed double stunners to HHH & Chyna I'll always remember when his music hit the reaction was so loud like nothing I've EVER experienced before you could literally see dust rising from the seats/arena because it was so loud and it felt un natural lol hard to explain... then I went amd say I believe it was Backlash (Rock vs Goldberg & Lesnar vs Cena) last one I went to was in Bridgeport CT Raw 15th anniversary:)

This match is art coming to life and Randy Savage being a stickler was the best thing ever for this match to stand the test of time. It's almost like ballet, stunt choreography where every move has to be precise and exact and Randy was kind of the stunt coordinator/director who orchestrated its so beautifully. I wonder if Ricky Steamboat has the originally Yellow note pad for the match so that he can share it in the WWE Museum so that all the fans can see the 300 steps that Randy instructed Ricky to write so that the world can see how detailed and well crafted this was match was because without that step by step detail the match would've never worked.

There have been (arguably) better matches since then but the fact this one is still talked about and still in a Top 10 of All Time (for so many of us) says a lot. And when it happened it really stood out, especially in WWF (WWE). Flair and the NWA of the era had some great technical matches but for WWF? They were in the Hogan era. So seeing a truly great, athletic, exciting match with a strong lead-up and story and having it steal the show with the ultra-hyped Hogan-Andre match...that was special.

They would have blown ANY main event out of the water, except for THAT ONE! The biggest moment in wrestling history. If there was one Wrestlemania, or other wrestling event I'd go back and be there for, it would be that one.

I met Ricky at a house party with my parents when I was a boy and I was the only kid there who knew who he was or the only one who cared. His photographer took a photo of him and I and he listened to me chat about all I knew about his legendary career with all the enthusiasm you could imagine. After it was all said and done he gave me tickets for that nexts week Monday night raw!

We were so broke. couldn't buy ppv. So I waited for the news to report who won the match. Felt so happy knowing that steamboat won. Looking back, u find how much care and thought they put towards the match makes u feel good. they tried hard and it turned out to be brilliant. It's also nice they had one of the greatest technical wrestlers, Brett the Hitman Hart, giving his analysis.

What's over looked when it comes to Steamboat vs Savage was the build up. The Dragon had a match the year before and was injured from a double axe handle over the metal guard rail. They kayfabed Steamboat losing his voice. This wasn't just a title but a grudge match built up over a year. In my fantasy booking I'd have Savage go over Steamboat in the next year's tournament then a wrestlemania main event the next year, Possibly steel cage.

Great comment, the buildup was indeed phenomenal. Macho winning the IC title against Tito by cheating and Ricky calling him out on it, both got in separate feuds for most of 86 but always kept an eye on one another, then near the end of 86/early 87 Macho crushed Ricky's larynx with the bell, then Ricky made his big return on Saturday night's main-event, then the super huge hype for Wrestlemania III and their epic showdown....yep, truly a masterpiece in storytelling. As good as Jim Crockett Promotion was at the time, they couldn't touch that by a mile. 👍🐉👍

@@jonathanturbide2232 Agree 100%, the buildup to that match was incredible.......the match on TV in late 86 where Savage injures Steamboat is great. The commentary for that match is great. Bruno attacking Randy when Savage is gloating in the locker room afterward. Steamboat learning to speak again. Finally shows up on SNME to shock Savage. Savage's promo right before he goes to the ring that night is the BEST wrestling promo of all-time...HISTORY BECKONS THE MACHO MAN.....YEAH!!!

Funny you mention a steel cage match because I read in a WWF magazine that shortly after their match at Wrestlemania III that they did have a steel cage match where The Dragon defended the IC title against Macho Man. I have never seen the match. Wonder if it is even true.

Even though it's said in a slightly negative light I like that it's acknowledged that Randy literally couldn't have had a match like this on that level with anybody else because Ricky was that great. Two one-of-a-kind Wrestlers who could do anything they wanted in that ring. Though I would argue both men had phenomenal matches with Ric Flair. Steamboat in the 89 trilogy and Savage at Wrestlemania 8.

Ricky Steamboat is an absolute wrestling legend, my favorite matches of all time were when he and Ric Flair faced one another in the late 1970s in Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling and again in 1989, they had a series of matches in WCW. This match with Savage was certainly a great one also. Thanks to The Dragon for so many years of great entertainment .
