Glad you're finding them useful! And that was the idea. When I came up it was either university or expensive courses to learn avid. And it's not the most intuitive to just pick up and learn. Hence the videos! To teach what I wish I knew sooner :)

"Nesting the plate in the VFX ID subcap so that it can't extend past the plate you've turned over" is a really cool little trick! I'm on a film without a VFX Editor for the first time, and I'm gonna try this.

Thanks for putting in the time and effort to put this walkthrough up! Funny enough, I've been working on internal training videos of our pull method on a Premiere Pro job and it's really helpful to see your process in Avid. Very similar in a lot of ways with some really interesting differences. I'll be working my way through your other videos in the coming months as I dive into the wonderful world of Avid more heavily!

Hey Jack, thanks for this excellent video. I've got a question about exporting the h264 REFs of the plates. You are exporting them without any burnins, beside the ones already coming from DI with the dailies, right? Or did I miss something? cheers

So I'd generally export the plates with burn ins of source tc, plate name, frame counter. Since making this video I have also adopted a practice of dropping a black and white effect over the area of the plate that is handles only. As my workflow has improved a bit since making these I may review these videos early next year when I get time and make new ones. Too slammed on projects to do right now but that's for bringing to my attention!

@@theavidassistant You're fast Jack 🙂 The B/W visualization sounds interesting. Re the BurnIns, when you batch export from the bin, are those subclips or subsequences with the src tc, shotID/plate name and framecounter? Can't imagine a way to export the subclips with the BurnIn from the bin though.

@@EditaufSchnitt Yes no the batch export from the bin is just something extra of a representation of each individual plate clean. Seperate from exports with burn-ins. The first job I had as VFX Editor which was an action-feature, the vendor asked for this. Similar to online turnovers a lot of this can vary depending on the vendor's requirements. These videos are meant to give a general overview of the most common stuff you would do.

Hey Jack, thank you for the very informative and helpful videos! I tried the VFX Counter implementation you talked about, but strangely I get seemingly random inputs in the field, e.g. typing in -1001 leads to -00001607. * Actually it adds to the 1001 the frames between Source Clip Start and the first frame of the subclip. Did you ever encounter such a behaviour? Thanks. **Update** I have tried all ways of subclipping VFX shots: If I subclip the VFX shot either from the source window with the full-length subclip or original masterclip, it will have the erronoeous VFX count ind the VFX subclip. If I decompose the sequence like you showed or I subclip from the record monitor, i.e. the sequence itself, it shows the -1001 correctly on the newly created subclip... Not sure if that happens on your end too or it is a bug with my version but at least there is a "workaround".

Hey! Yes the issue you were experiencing is caused by cutbacks. There is a small warning about this in the video where it refers to the explanation by master the workflow. Long story short your decompose has given you at least two new subclips but they are both linked to the same master clip. So the full length is longer than the decomposed subclip. When you apply the -1001 to the first subclip then it gets applied at the master clip level. So the second subclip linking to this master clip will start later than -1001 if that makes sense? This is the Occassion when you will have to decompose multiple times or just to a straight subclip of each clip manually where you are cutting back to the same take of a clip.

@@theavidassistant Hey Jack, in the meantime I found out that setting up the project as "Film" opposed to "Video" handles masterclips differently and now the subclips/ VFX counters works correctly. ( If set to Film at the project creation stage )

@Seveleen it also allows for sub-frame tweaking of audio / video sync even after it's been made into a subclip. Handy little checkbox ☑️
