I bought the Noire a couple of months ago on a whim and that DCA had a 10th anniversary offer for a free cable upgrade to a Vivo cable if you bought directly from them. Great deal! I’m revisiting this review because I want to add some observations to the discussion. This is my 2nd DCA headphone. I also own an Ether CX. I run the Noire without filters but let’s attribute that to age as I am much older than you. What amazes me the most about them is the well defined image placement. They don’t sound like a closed back and the soundstage is impressive. It’s not the widest but it’s deep with good height. The Ether CX is a more neutral headphone but the Noire is more “real world “. One thing not pointed out is that they, along with the Ether CX, require current to really shine. Even though they’re designed for portability, they need power to really shine. Running them balanced is almost a necessity! I would also point out that the stock cable is a choking point. I have all of the DCA cables and the Dummer is the worst performing by far IMO. Both the Dum (no longer offered) & the Vivo cables outperform it in every aspect. It’s immediately noticeable & not even close! I haven’t heard everything, but the Noire should easily be in the discussion for best closed back under $1k.

Speaking of comfort, I've been using the Aeon Flow Closed for 8-14hrs almost every day for ~1yr now. Insanely comfortable, great for sound isolation without feeling claustrophobic. Agree completely with your assessment of the Noir. Love this headphone. Also have the Abyss Diana V2 and love them as an open back . I end up using the Noir far more due to the comfort level. Wish the Abyss engineers were a little less concerned with being able to run over their headphones with a Jeep and more concerned with ergonomics . No one who spends 3 thousand and more are going to treat their phones that way. Dan Clark rules!

I love those connectors, better quality than 3.5mm by far and they are super easy to connect and has a very satisfying click when you do...
@darthwhit3 жыл бұрын
I hated the hirose connectors that Dan Clark used. Not sure there has ever been a concern with the quality of 3.5mm. It also wouldn't matter if you were plugging it into 3.5mm. I modded my Aeon2 Flow Closed to take 3.5mm so I could use all of the aftermarket cables I already have. Also makes it easier to do balanced. These headphones are not very efficient so using them balanced really helps. Especially as a portable can.
@paulusandronicus3 жыл бұрын
@@darthwhit The 3.5mm connectors use friction between the male and female parts of the actual connector to "lock" it in place; this eventually will cause wear on the connector itself and start causing issues eventually. The Dan Clark connectors have a locking mechanism to hold it in place while leaving the connector part just to do that function (electrical signal connection). It is just a far superior connector that is quality built and works perfectly fine; the replacement connectors are readily available if you want to make your own cables and many cable companies make replacement cables. I just don't understand the reason why people hate these connectors other than just repeating the cliches that all these "pundits" say about headphone connectors.
@darthwhit3 жыл бұрын
How very condescending of you. Did you even know the name of the connector? It isn't, "The Dan Clark connector." Have you made a cable using the Hirose connector? They are not easy to work with. I have been a Media Technician for 15 years now. I currently own nine pairs of headphones and have probably cycled through another 20 pairs. Every single one of them have terminated in a 3.5mm connection either at the cups or to plug into a source. You want to guess at how many 3.5mm connectors I've seen fail due to repeated use? One, that I can recall on a Sansa Clip + that I was able to solder and repair. It does happen but not so frequently. More often I've seen them sheered or bent. The force that it takes to do that can also damage the Hirose connector. I've owned two headphones with the Hirose connector and I vastly prefer the 3.5mm. For one it's more frequently used. I have way more compatible cables already. Since I'm often working with my headphones I actually prefer the cable being able to break-away if too much force is exerted. I'd rather my headphones come unplugged instead of pulling my DAC off my desk or ripping my headphones violently off of my head. I've been modding my headphones since 2001 with my first Grado and have yet to have an issue with 3.5mm. You are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine. Doesn't mean you have to treat others with disrespect if their opinion doesn't match your own. Also... I wouldn't say 3.5mm is purely friction since it's a spring that hold the detent. RCA would be an example of a purely friction based connection.
@paulusandronicus3 жыл бұрын
@@darthwhit you are right sorry for sounding condescending and if you prefer those 3.5mm then enjoy them. I know they are not Dan Clark made connectors i just wrote it like that for people that might read this and are not familiar with then so they know which is which; and yes i have used the HRS connectors on cables and on some prototype headphones i worked on and had no problems.

I really enjoyed your video. You are clearly a great lover of headphones, as I am. I currently own 6 and until recently had 7! This has been a great source of amusement for my long suffering family. One pair is the new Noires, although I thought I had agreed with my dealer to buy a pair of Aeon 2 closed backs. It was thus quite a shock when I opened the box to discover the ones supplied were black. As it happens, this has not bothered me at all. I love these headphones for their transparency, comfort and neutrality of sound. I do not find the treble too bright, but my music tastes are classical, small combo modern jazz and folk. I guess for pop, electronic or indie music using one of the tuning pads might be a good idea. I have to date felt no need to do so. I would like to mention I bought the Dan Clark Vivo upgrade cable too. This is excellent, although the stock one is quite satisfactory too. One final thought. These headphones are very ingeniously designed for portability. They are also very light. However, they need a lot of power to perform at their best, so using them as a portable headphone without adequate power to drive them could prove disappointing.

I picked up a pair of Drop x Aeon Xs when Drop dropped them. I really like them. Not an "exciting" headphone, but "refined" (which I think you say in your review). It's a headphone that at first listening doesn't attract any attention to anything it's presenting, but the more I listen to them, the more I appreciate and enjoy them. They are made well, look good, are compact, and super comfortable. The newer design folding yoke is nice, as is the small case. They can use some power to drive well. The glued on pads are a bummer. The cables are nice, while the special cup connector is of good quality, it introduces compatibility issues. I haven't experimented with the tuning pads. I've just left the single white one in.

@KhanSphere3 жыл бұрын
Aeon RT closed vs Aeon 2 closed (and noir): similar comfort. Aeon RT is a fantastic deal, Aeon 2 is a tier above, has better separation and better low extension. Aeon 2 folds if that's useful to you. I'd say both are good but at the Aeon 2 price I'd strongly consider the Ether CX instead, the Ether CX is less neutral but more enjoyable for me. Between the Aeon 2 and the Noir I'd get the latter, again because the Noir tuning is more enjoyable. The bass is fucking wonderful, not just for songs like 99 Problems, but they really do wonderful things for a bass guitar (Aqualung, Radar Love). Between the Aeon Noir and Ether CX, I'd still get the Ether CX, but it's very close. Between any of the above and the Aeon RT, it's up to you. I will say both are worth the money that's charged. The DUMMER cable isn't...great. There's microphonics and although I'm not a cable-phile (I think it's mostly garbage) microphonics on heavily amplified planars do NOT sound good. I was lucky enough to get a VIVO cable when I purchased one of these as a bundle, and while it's not worth the $200 asking price, it saved me the trouble of making a custom cable (since the connector isn't standard) and I'd say it's a requirement. All of them need a decent chunk of clean power to be worth the asking price, so factor that in if you don't have it already.

Are the Aeon Noire a fitting closed back headphone for gaming? (mostly shooter, need to hear those footsteps) But still want to enjoy music,... with them.

Excellent review. Question, which of the white dampening pads are you using? It comes with two. Also, just FYI, although it's not ideal that the pads are glued in, the adhesive is a special adhesive meant to allow removal and reuse of the pads. It's actually very easy to replace a pad on these. I own the Aeon 2C but I replaced the pads with the perforated pads from the Noir and I love the sound. I wonder what the frequency graph looks like. It might come very close to the Noir's.

the connectors are just mini XLR? I guess most DAPs would struggle to power the Noire?

The biggest downsides to me are the glued on pads, and the poor timbre due to the treble peaks. I generally prefer the Noire as well but sometimes the midrange can sound a little too sucked out. For the standard A2C, I prefer the black felt filter because I felt the white felt was over-damped and the black foam was still too bright. The black felt was a solid middle-ground. On the Noire, I felt the white pads gave the most pleasant listening experience although the black felt was close behind. The additional treble presence meant the treble took precedence over the damping and the white felt was the best for that.

How about the power requirements? I am considering the Aeon, and I definitely want to use it on the go. I have a HIby R5 and it produces quite a bit of power, but I know the Aeons are hard(ish) to drive. Thanks

Using the Sony WM1A I gave almost enough power. My Hiby R3 can’t drive them adequately. Hope that helps

Hey DMS, can you please briefly say why you like the Noire more than Verite Closed? Is the detail retrieval diff between them huge? I was really determined to save up for the twice as expensive VC, but I'm quite surprised from your review in a good way. Would you say I'll be okay with the 3K peak if, for example, I barely tolerate the 560s treble that is slightly over the Harman curve?
@DMS3TV3 жыл бұрын
The verite-closed would likely be more to your tuning preferences if you use the microsuede pads. Comfort is a huge win on the Aeon Noire and it’s just really well balanced. I find the treble to be easily tolerable as long as I use the damping insert.

@@DMS3TV Thanks for the info! One more thing you didn't mention - does inserting the white felt reduce the detail retrieval like other reviewers mentioned as a weakness? How do they compete with the bass kings Fostex X00 Ebony?

Hey DMS, got the opportunity to pick up a Focal Clear for about 950 bucks here in germany... But those Aeon Noirs sound really appealing, having the sound characteristics I was kind of looking for. Now the Focals also being a bit warm but as a open back dynamic... which one would you recommend at the given price point? Which is the better overall package? Thx!

The pads use a 3M sticky pad and can absolutely be swapped, just not a lot before the stickiness wears out. Buy whichever color you prefer, both pads are for sale and can tune either whichever way you prefer! I know because I have the original with the noire pads now.

The foam rotating and strap loosening is a real bitch on all of the Aeons. I've replaced the pads on my AFCs three times before I gave up; it comes back every time. From what I gather it's caused by the foam being "rolled" i.e. slid forwards and backwards along your head (if you're using the headphone with ear off for example). By no means a deal-breaker comfort wise, my LCD-2s are still a mallet to the skull by comparison. The strap is definitely more annoying but just keep a philips screwdriver on your desk I guess lol

Kind of surprised since you've said you're not a fan of Harman target. Anyway, it would be super cool to do a set of measurements with the different damping materials, it would certainly be a good reference for people looking at these headphones.
