Uncommon opinion, I like aerial roots more than flower spikes. I just find the weirdness and otherness of the aerial roots so much more cooler than flower spikes imo.

Mr Taku agreed!!! They make the plant look creepy and alien 👽 pair them with a really weird looking flower, and you have a little piece of a different world sitting on your desk.

Yes! When I go orchid shopping, I don't even make most of my decisions based on how much I like the flowers of the orchid 😂 i just assume I'm going to spend 90% of its life looking at the roots and the leaves anyway (I'm a relatively new grower and I haven't gotten the hang of things yet) and I just drool over healthy roots now😂

I agree. I love 'wildness' in all sorts of things. Not for me the perfect, clipped, polished look. They look more natural with the aerial roots. But, each to their own

Thanks are all this good info. I have been coddling an orchid that I thought I would lose, but there are a lot of aerial roots as opposed to roots from underneath the orchid. By accident one of those aerial roots broke in half and I thought what the heck I'm stick it in the medium and in a week there were more aerial roots and a new leaf forming!!! I was surprised.

I started this journey with my grocery store orchids because I hated throwing them out after they bloomed. They are healthy and reblooming. Maybe you could add this info to the repotting video.

A friend gave me an orchid in flower two years ago. It went quite sickly but I learned to use potato water occasionally and the orchid turned very healthy and flowered for a few months. Now it's got long aerial roots and a stem filled with new flower buds. I've ordered some orchid compost and a larger pot. I'll have to give it a dedicated table but not sure how to manage the aerial roots to encourage bigger growth.

I'm 46 consider myself a bit of a green thumb. I have not had the best track record with orchids. That is until the one I bought myself from Aldi last year. Hello, thank you very much!! Your videos are so interesting and eye opening! Just what I need. I am wondering... Why do I see black aerial roots? My orchid has aerial roots but some of them are very dark brown (black almost) above the pot. Still, they are functional and they become green as they come outside the pot. (I noticed that they started to change colour several months ago) Also, I recently repotted my orchid and it seems I got confused and left more "aerial" roots... Now I spray them every other day, but it seems I'm losing them... (One of them became wrinkled and brown). What should I do?? Thanks a lot for your time.

Help!!! I know that this video is not about my question, but I wanted to know what is the best thing to grow my very sick Phalaenopsis orchid in? I repotted it as the roots were rotting. And I found that they only had 2 good one's (They are probably dead now too), but it had some great aerial roots. Unfortunately we had a really hot summer and stupid me, I had them near the air con. All the rest are doing fantastic after being there though, all except this one. It's every, single time that I repot them that they die. It has a keiki, with a tiny aerial root on it, but the leaf is dying. I can't seem to get the mix right. I use a combination of orchid mix and spagnum moss, but they are not liking it. Some people say to just plant it in bark chips? Other's say, just use LECA? I do have a small green house. Would it do well in there after I get the medium right? One lady suggested that I just plonk the rest of the plant on organic green, live moss? I wouldn't even know where to get this apart from the bush. Help!!!

Really surprised 'orchid pots' aren't tilted. ...seems like the entire 'plant potting' industry believes only in vertical pots. ((Did see a few tilted...but I'd be looking for one to hang up.)) oh well...time to MacGyver something up. - Kind of tired of the plant-holding pot falling out of the main pot (used for hanging) because the flower stem(s) get laden with flowers. ((It's never fallen out, but it has tried to sneak a date with Gravity during watering in the sink!))

If 1-2 inches of root from the tip is dead and the rest is green, can I cut the dead part off? And do I cut into the green or stay a little below it? This is on a oncidium.
@annakuc7714 жыл бұрын
Oncidium has such fine roots try to check if the root feels easy to 'peel' and leaving the string behind, that means it's dead. Try never to cut into green flesh a lot of pathogens and bacteria can get through it inside orchid.

Hi Danni. I have a question about phal aerial roots. Mine has been growing like a weed all summer, it now looks like a porcupine with roots everywhere along the stem and between the leaves. My question is, do the roots between the leaves use up the growing nodes and stop flower spikes growing in There? I worry because it is the only phal without a spike yet. I Love your videos, thank you for them

I've had such an orchid this year, she suddenly felt happy with new place and medium and started to produce a lot of roots. One root grow in between the leaves than she produced two spikes. One was fine but second one had little space and started to grow from under the root. It had hard way to grow but with time it bend very strange (I thought it was root then). Just leave it alone and it will find it's way toward the sun. Mine broke because I was to curious 🙃 observe your orchid but she should be perfectly fine:)

@Donto G hmm I live in Southern California so it's super dry and that's why I keep it inside. I have it in a pot meant for orchinds, it's ceramic and has lots of holes in it. I'm scared of over watering for the same reason though since I don't have a plastic container for it anymore. I also put it in media specifically for orchids and it's been in the same spot since I brought it home. From what you've said though it may not be getting enough water. I've over watered succulents so which is why I try not to water my orchids too much. You've been so helpful! Thank you 😊

I've had my orchid for about 3yrs, we purchased already grown. It's a smaller one, and has reflowered 4 or 5 times. One time it had two flowering stems at the same time and was really nice looking. The problem is I have about 14 aerial roots some small, some 4 or 5 inches.. growing all on one side.. Seems to be the side closest to the sun as the window faces west. These take away from its aesthetic value, and make it look alien like.. what is the reason for so many? And what can I do? I water it once or twice a week, so the main roots get plenty of water. It currently just bloomed all of its new flowers about two weeks ago.
