We are out in Virginia Beach shopping for war birds. And I had the opportunity to check out a particular war bird; an L39 from Czechoslovakia. The Aero L39 Albatros is single engine Jet with amazing maneuvering capabilities. It was first designed in Czechoslovakia and widely used as a military trainer aircraft around the world. Still today many countries in the middle east and around Africa actively use these airplanes for light missions.
In the united states, these are collectible aircraft for the right owner. The one we’re checking out today is owned by my friend Raf, and he’s taken good care of it. These aircraft can now be bought for around $200,000 - $300,000 depending on their condition.
Here are the performance data
engine - AL-25TL 3,790 pounds of thrust
speed - up to 466 mph
range - 300 - 400 miles
rate of climb - 4,100 fpm
service ceiling - 36,000 ft

The L-39 was designed solely as a trainer, but some countries have modified them for light combat missions. Built in the Czech Republic in 1960 and labeled as Albatros, it was never intended for anything more than a trainer.

It was built from the start with 2 pylons iirc and mainly for training but always could be used for light attack

@@mortymortal7 he isn’t native to jets, prop driven aircraft are measured by horsepower. It is far more common than you think for there to be problems like this when talking about jets. Even militaries when they started using jets struggled with pilots who were brought up on prop planes, showing higher accident rates because they are so different. Your looking at a very different set of cerium stances that the average civilian pilot doesn’t work with almost ever.

Just a little fyi, Jet engines aren’t usually rated in horsepower, they are rate in in terms of thrust. There are exceptions to this like with a turboprop of course and with turbines used for power generation and say in ships or tanks so people don’t blow me up....I do know what I’m talking about. However, as a general rule, Jet aircraft are rated in terms of thrust and the engine that L-39C was designed around (Ivchenko AI-25TL) is about 3800 lbs if my memory serves me. Great vid, loves these birds. My hangar neighbor owns two and they are an absolute riot to fly.

Just looking at it without being able to see under the the skin of it, its basically the two seats up front, cockpit and canopy that looks to be roomy but not hudge. The wings are nice and short but thick for zippin around like you said just in different words LoL. Then you see the rest of the fuselage and it's for the engine. Just an engine with two wings and two seats basically. LoL like a honda civic with a 350 small block in it!

Otherwise known as Junkyard jets. You really have to have a lot of disposable income though, can we all say, heavy maintenance! Saw one for sale in Nevada for $90,000. Cheap as planes go. Upgrading the avionics, inspections, maintenance, insurance and fuel use easily triples that that figure. Finally, without a dedicated service team (military has those) up jet vs down jet could be significant. In addition, being an experimental classification, your airports can be limited as well. That said, if I had $1,000,000 of disposable income, I could be tempted. As to runway length needed, not sure about the numbers but I would guess you would need at least 4,000 feet at sea level. To be safe, margin for error, I would stick to large runways. These puppies are slick and take some doing to slow em down so landing on the backside of the power curve seems likely. See that lever on the stick, the funky Eastern block braking system! Anyway, not withstanding some technical description errors, nice review. Thank you!
