My Top 15 and other thoughts later on! 15. Just Push Play (2001) It feelt like the band knew they had to change in the new decade but who were the targets for this album? Young people listening to Linkin Park and Red Hot Chili Peppers? Older fans who had given up on the band? A whole new kind of fans? I am not sure. I think they do the slower stuff pretty good still but the rest seemed much like an experiment nobody asked for. "Fly Away From Here" is another strong ballad of the band but there isn't much to return for on this one. "Jaded" is cool too. If the album overall was like the singles it would rank a lot higher! 14. Honkin' on Bobo (2004) Here the band got away from the sort of production their post 1989 albums had and it is sort of cool to hear Aerosmith go all the blues but the lack of original material is felt. Like so many other cover-albums or alike it might be cool in the beginning but once the news are over it sits firmly on the shelf and rarely listened to again. Best song for me? "Baby, Please Don't Go". Not terrible just "another album". 13. Music from Another Dimension! (2012) It's too long and all over the place. I do like quite a few ideas here and there though. The sad part is that the three bonus-tracks are amongst the best of them all. Those songs could be worth checking out if you haven't. At this point they really should just given the fans a more riff-oriented shorter and more simple record. I know Tom Hamilton of the band wanted it as well but somehow we got yet another big over-produced record once again. 12. Nine Lives (1997) "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" became their biggest hit ever and this album has some good points but is also way too long and unfocused. If they had put the best songs from my number 15, 14, 13 and 12 on the same record and done so the sound would fit.. It would been a good or even great record. This one I don't mind listening to but I never do... I just don't reach for it. 11. Rock in a Hard Place (1982) A fun record where I think the "new" members holds up. The lyrics are rather bad though and Steven Tyler doesn't sound very good either. The instrumentation is fine enough. I always enjoy listening to it but once is enough. It doesn't have enough "meat on it" to be something I return to on a more regular basis. 10. Get a Grip (1993) Aerosmith was one of few older bands who was huge in the early 90's when grunge came and I can sort of see how on this one. It rocks pretty hard, have several big singles but as Jason said it also sounds a bit forced and is the first album that is way too long. I liked it much when I was younger but it hasn't aged that well as a unit of songs. I rather listen to a song now and again. 9. Draw the Line (1977) A big step down in their career after Rocks but still some cool songs and nice energy. Had it gotten a bit better production and a bit more focused songs this would rank higher. 8. Night in the Ruts (1979) The last album of the decade but I do feel the songs are a bit stronger than on Draw the Line and I like the production much more. Not really up to par with the best Classic Aerosmith but an enjoyable listen. 7. Permanent Vacation (1987) The big return and lots of hits. I overall like this album. The Beathes cover I could been without but the record is fun and happy. A good summer record. It does sound a bit too much 80's however. I wouldn't mind hearing some sort of remastering of this one at some point. 6. Done with Mirrors (1985) A part from Honkin' On Bobo this is like their "odd" album. Not really like classic Aerosmith and definitely not like their big return. I do like it though. It is a bit scaled back and not something that grabs you by first listen but with time I do appreciate it quite a bit. I like all the songs on it. 5. Pump (1989) The band was riding on a high wave and for me this has aged better than the previous albums. It has strong hits and the rest is cool too. Being younger I didn't get the odd intros and endings but I like that part now. Make you relax a bit between all the power-pop-rock. A very good record for working out I believe! 4. Get Your Wings (1974) My first meeting with the classic band beyond their biggest hits and I fell in love immediately. I still like it quite a bit but not as much as I once did. Still a really good record! 3. Aerosmith (1973) I would definitely not have ranked this as high before but few records by anyone make me love it more and more. Beyond the famous "Dream On" and "Mama Kin" it might seem like a pretty standard blues/boogie/rock album but I love how Steven Tyler sounds on it and the grooves. I adore this one! Anecdote time: I had gotten a new job and started 08:00 in the morning. It was cool and dark (felt I was there in the middle of the night). I did find my work.. I thought but didn't see an entry. Where was I suppose to go? I quickly went back and forth on a rather long street but couldn't find it. Luckily the person who was there to teach me starting up came along. What was I listening to whilst doing all this? "One Way Street". Just the right song at the right moment. 2. Toys in the Attic (1975) The one with "Walk This Way" and "Sweet Emotion" that also is the bands most diverse record. If you only look for those cool riffs kind of songs you might be a bit disappointed. However it shows their capablities as songwriters better than on any other record at the same time. I love "You See Me Crying" it has fantastic interplay between guitar and piano that is oddly never mentioned with a band famous for all the ballads. 1. Rocks (1976) One of my favorite albums of all time. Just amazing riffs and a feeling few other albums can match. It's not a masterpiece sort of album just one where I love every song even those that is a bit rough around the edges. "Why is it called Rocks? Becuase it does!". Aerosmith was huge in America in 1970's and huge in the world in the late 1980's and 1990's. After that I feel like it has become "cool" to trash Aerosmith. Sort of like with Kiss or Metallica. Huge bands that "sold out". I for one doesn't understand the "hate" against all the ballads either. I think Aerosmith (along with Scorpions and a few others) are really good at doing them.. So why not? I rather hear a really good power-ballad than a forced pop song or tired rock song. They have clunkers on the albums and some albums are way too long but overall.. I listen prefer listening to a weak Aerosmith song than a weak song by many other big rock bands.

Thanks for your indepth overview of so many groups. Even if I often disagree, I also often agree and these album rating videos have fundamentally challenged and changed the way I listen to and enjoy the music of many different groups and AeroSmith is one of the best examples of this. AeroSmith is a group I have actively tried to resist the appeal of and dismiss but over time they broke my defenses. I finally relented and realized how much I liked their music when I figured out that they were better at assimilating and delivering their own authentic interpretation of the swagger and groove of the Rolling Stones, which is one of my all time favorites, than any other group ever has in my opinion. Steven Tyler in particular has been outspoken in admitting how much the delivery of Mic Jagger was an inspiration for him when he realized that he didn't have to have the ideal image of a beautiful voice or appearance to make a great impact. The blues, honky tonk, rock and roll swagger, sensuality and contrasting sensitivity of the Rolling Stones were all distilled and delivered in a different way by AeroSmith, though they weren't quite as impressive to my mind, the facts are that few American bands ever were able to produce such a fantastic collection of songs and they certainly provided the Stones with some stiff competition in the seventies and a kindred spirit in rock and roll compositions that have been shortchanged by high browed and biased critiques that have degraded bands with any blues based inspiration. Hard to admit for someone so long biased against them, but the fact is they are an excellent band and their eighties pop songs like Jamie's Got a Gun, Love in an Elevator, Rag Doll or Amazing are almost as impressive as their rawer seventies songs are.

I think it could have been a fantastic album had Joe Perry stuck with it, but turns out to he half an album to my ears. it has some of Aerosmith's best material, becoming raw like the first album. The best songs for me are the ones that rock hard with great rhythm and a melody to guide the song along: Chiquita, Cheesecake, Three Mile Smile lead the rockers. "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" for me is the definitive "ballad" for Aerosmith. He sounds convincingly sad and desperate in vocals (unlike the cornsyrup songs from later years: Hole In My Sole, Fly Away From Hear, The Grind, Don't Wanna Miss a Thing) yet REMEMBER rocks at a fanatic screaming clip towards the end.. that's Aerosmith, and that's how they should do a ballad if Brittany Spears or whoever twists Tyler's arm behind his back and forces him to sing one) Yes, it's a cover, but that's better than a I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing which was not Aerosmith written anyway. No Suprise and Bone to Bone are good filler rockers I think, but they don't stand out the way Three Mile Smile does, nothing exceptional that is. Think About It has a fantastic rockin' cover, their hardest rockin cover since Train Kept a Rollin. I love it. Those guitars are screamin! Unfortunately, my two least favorite Aerosmith songs, up to that point, are on this album: Reefer Headed Woman and Mia. Reefer is a drunkin' passin' out song that passes out instead of rocks, and Tyler whines like Aretha Franklin all the way through it. Mia has great lyrics, but the song isn't rock at all. I would expect it to be played in my elementary school by my old music teacher, never on an Aerosmith album. Two bad songs can definitely ruin a great album, just like a couple of roaches on an otherwise great plate of food. So Night In the Ruts is my least favorite Aerosmith Album from the 70s or 80s.

Your shows have really help me enjoy the music of AeroSmith and Elton John more than before because it encouraged me to explore their albums more in-depth than I ever had and I was surprised at how much I liked. I enjoy Elton John more but that was true before, so relatively speaking they both really rose in my estimation.

Rocks and Get Your Wings are my personal favorites, but I have no problem with Toys in the Attic being the consensus number 1. Perfect production, sharp songs, including my favorite, Adam's Apple. For Draw the Line, nobody mentioned the amazing Milk Cow Blues, which surprised me. I've never heard Honkin' with Bobo, but I'm guessing it was more of a personal project, than a commercial album. Appreciated your comments about the first album-solid music, but they were obviously working out their influences and establishing their identity. For Get Your Wings, the defining word is swagger-that album gets the closest to their concert sound of the 70s, which I got to enjoy a couple of times.

Agree with Justin on Nine Lives. Definitely underrated. They re-recorded it in NYC mostly live in the studio, when Kramer returned. The rock songs rock, and the ballads are meaty w/good guitar solos. Song for song, it's definitely better than Grip, Mirrors, Draw/Line, Hard Place.

Well, my top 5 is just like this: 5- Get Your Wings 4- Permanent Vacation 3- Pump 2- Rocks _(it just fails a little bit on "Nobody's Fault", "Home Tonight"...and the lack of variety)_ 1- Toys in the Attic _(perfect playlist)_ ... I also like Honkin' On Bobo (6°) and the debut album (7°), being the last "great" from the band Get A Grip (8°). Don't remember a lot of songs from the rest of their discography. About _Done with Mirrors_ ...I tried really hard and listened to it several times, but never surprised me. It's just plain rock and roll. That's why Permanent Vacation is a lot better imo.

Thanks for this review! Nicely done. Van Halen and Aerosmith are my two favorite bands, I was into Aerosmith in mid-70s (still today) and I will say that the seventies era up until Night in the ruts is the Original, Classic Aerosmith sort of like the DLR Van Halen and then like you mentioned the middle portion area of the Band would be Rock in a hard place, which I love and Done with mirrors... and then their later career starts with Permanent Vacation, which is similar to the Van Hagar era but I will say that I prefer this to Van Hagar... although I favor the early Aerosmith with Rocks being my #1 ! 2 Toys 3 self-titled 3 Wings Etc for early era But I also love Nine Lives, great album to me as well as Just push play (Avent garden, Face, Sunshine etc ect). I guess I could just say that I love pretty much all the Aerosmith albums and songs with only a few songs that I would skip. Honking on Bobo would probably be my least favorite even though I think it's pretty good, but I just don't go back to it as often as the others, it's not on my playlist /rotation like Rocks, Nine lives, Hard place.

I totally agree with that one guy's take on Pump (he had it at number 3). A record that constantly gets shit on by the "hardcore" Areosmith fans. I'll never understand it, to me it was the perfect combination of classic hard rock Areosmith with a great pop sensibility, so I really enjoyed hearing a fan talk up that album for once. Rocks is my number 1 though for sure.

I was 11 and living near Boston when Aerosmith "Aerosmith" came out. Me and my 11 year old friends, looked at the cover and played the game of "who would you want to fight, if you had to fight one of them?" This was because it was in vogue, then, for rock bands to try to look "tough" on their album covers; Probably to convey the message of "just because we have long hair doesn't mean we're sissys; we'll kick your ass!" All of us decided we would take our chances with Brad Whitford, certainly not Tyler, because he had his shirt open, ready to fight any second.. Sidenote:: When "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" came out a little later, Nigel Olsen was a slam dunk, but I digress... The year or so before the album came out and shot up to #1 on the Boston Top 40 (which kind of mirrored the national top 40 except with bands like J. Geils and Aerosmith wedged in between the Beatles solo albums) the band was immensely popular with the teenagers, who had cars, and would be going to see Aerosmith, because they were the loudest band of all -even louder than Pegasus, another local act.. When Aerosmith played at one particular club, Joe Perry wasn't old enough to go inside, so they would run a 50 foot cord out the back door, and half the patrons would be standing on the lawn behind the building, with their drinks in to-go cups, watching Perry rip it up on the guitar, while the people inside watched the rest of the band, probably wondering how Whitford was able to sound like 2 guitarists playing. Each of their first 4 albums were a must-have as soon as they came out... But, then by the time Draw the Line came out, we were hearing stories about them snorting coke backstage and playing kind of sloppy (the album title was a backhanded reference to the lines of coke, probably Tyler's sense of humor) and I guess kids imagined they could hear it in the album; and the word got out that "the new Aerosmith album kind of sucks" By the time Night In The Ruts came out, we all thought we could tell that something was wrong...or they were just getting a bit lazy... But, seeing all the high rankings of Draw The Line on here is going to make me go back and give it another listen...some people have it as high as #3! (what are *they* snorting, LOL!) and so my curiosity is peaked.

For what it's worth, Aerosmith comes from the Vietnam War Era. But they had nothing to do at all with that music scene. They were happier--which may seem surprising. They were looking forward (perhaps unintentionally). In 1968 having long hair and wearing blue jeans was profoundly rebellious. By 1972 you could purchase blue jeans at Sears, and long hair was cool. The American fabric had expanded (for better or worse). Aerosmith embraced freedom. They were more interested in sex and drugs and rock n roll than they were in anger and suffering and injustice and protesting. Rocks is there greatest album, their greatest artistic achievement--though I love their first album nearly equally (and Draw the Line which was messy but consistent with what they had always been is my other favorite). I'm glad to see young people exploring such things. The 70s was one hell of a decade.

Top 12 1. Toys in the Attic - greatest variety and the highest and most consistent quality of songs to me, the jazzy honky tonk rocking swing in Tench Inch Record, hard wild rock in Toys in the Attic and heavy thumping sound in Round and Round, slow burn build with a bluesy bounce rich with howling atmosphere in Uncle Salty, the whining guitar solo in Adam's Apple with the ascending and descending riff complimenting the soaring rise in vocals, also has atmospheric breaks that slow down the tempo and create a dreamy mystical atmosphere like No More No More, also has one of the greatest and most sincere ballads with lush string and piano arrangement and the vocals submerged deep in the mix with a ghostly reverberating presence, a wide dynamic range, fine mix of discordance and silky smoothness. And of course two of their best ever singles Walk this Way and Sweet Emotion. 2. Draw the Line- the black sheep of the Exile on Main Street progeny done harder and dirtier with less evident sophistication but the leads, delicious riffs and vocal prowess lift it up to a trashy transcendence, the funky down and dirty junky groove, the fabulous filthy riff and vulgar vocal mix made delicious with its decadence and a pinch of alley cat glam with the honky tonk piano and harmonica, one of the greatest grower albums ever, a pinch of psychedelia at the end of Critical Mass 3. Get Your Wings 4. Rocks 5. Night in the Ruts 6. Debut Album 7. Permanent Vacation 8. Pump tied with Get a Grip 10. Nine Lives parts of the melody in Hole in My Soul (really good song) resembles Quite Rightly So by Procol Harum 11. Done with Mirrors 12. Rock in a Hard Place

Here's a cross comparison possibility for a program you could have: two different artists with the same order of albums from the same years all in the top three. Specifically for me, it is number 1, 2 and 3 for both Joni Mitchell and Aerosmith. Joni Mitchell top three albums for me: 1. Hissing of the Summer Lawn 1975 2. Hejira 1976 3. Court and Spark 1974 Aerosmith top three albums for me 1. Toys in the Attic 1975 2. Rocks 1976 3. Get Your Wings 1974

Pump is definitely their best post comeback album. Even my bottom albums I think are all good albums. Love their whole catalog. Done With Mirrors and Night in the Ruts are the 2 most underrated of all their albums.

@27:43 Question: "When does Steven Tyler introduce the "yak-yak-yak-yak-yeow" Answer: That's actually on Get Your Wings, on Train Kept a Rollin, though it's most pronounced on PERMANENT VACATION, which happens to be my favorite album of all time, it rocks all the way through, even Angel is a POWER ballad, unlike their later unamplified cornsyrup stuff. Since PV, Tyler hasn't done any of those screams, though it was probably was inspired by the Walk This Way with Run DMC screaming he did, and yes, songs like Draw The Line and Back in the Saddle, and stuff from ROCK IN A HARD PLACE, which is a fantastic album all the way through, great production. You can hear the cymbals on the drum kit on songs like the title track.

Another hugely popular band that I never quite got heavily into. I had Toys in the Attic back in the day and I played it frequently. I've always dug their breakout single Dream On but I've never been able to ignore the "Rolling Stones imitators" tag that some critics put on them. It's kind of undeniable. They could rock but most of their later stuff feels overproduced to me. I would be remiss not to mention the rock/rap collaborations.

Explains the discrepancy in my list. Also, Just Push Play is one of the worst albums I’ve ever heard, agree fully with Kramzer.

I had their greatest hits for years and never dug into their catalog until recently. I can't get the opening 5 tracks from their debut out of my head. My favorites will probably change with more listens but I love the rawness of the first album. Groovy as hell. Toys is great too.

Damn never heard someone who likes Aerosmith who’s not fond of Remember Walking in The Sand. I’m also convinced when most people say they dislike songs like Dream On, Stairway, Bohemian Rhapsody it’s really mostly just because they’re overplayed. Like if some random indie band made any of those songs and someone was shown them they’d probably be impressed.

Jason’s ranking get your wings ,the debut and rocks so low. I almost had to stop the video. Anyone who ranks those that low don’t get 70s Aerosmith and saying there’s not great lyricism on get your wings is insane, pure street poetry. Aerosmith is one of those bands that I really liked in the 70's. I had everything in vinyl from the first record to Draw the Line. Live Bootleg too. By the time Ruts came out I had become a big prog rock collector. I have not bought an Aerosmith album since. Not because i don't like them but they were all over the radio from Permanant on. I did not really care for the radio stuff they did. I was all but allergic to AOR oriented stuff. There were so many bands, like Journey, that I thought were good bands. I just didn't like the hit machine approach to songwriting. It was all way too predictable......and boring. That said, I'll put my two cents in. I'll stick to the albums I bought, so the list won't be too long ! 6. Live Bootleg (great Lord of Thighs. Most of the album is pretty sloppy). 5. Aerosmith 4. Get Your Wings 3. Draw the Line 2. Toys in the Attic 1. Rocks Thanks guys, as usual, your lists are fun for this old guy!

I’m not a huge fan of Aerosmith; they definitely have a legacy that’s hard to deny and I respect that, but they could get pretty blanket and cross-disciplinary, even in the 70s. That and Steven Tyler’s really troubling history is also a factor. But, some really good and even great songs here and there tho, and few I love! 1. Rocks (1976) *to me, this is the obvious winner! 2. Toys in the Attic (1975) 3. Night in the Ruts (1979) *I’m with you, Jason! 4. Get Your Wings (1974) 5. Draw the Line (1977) *a real mixed bag for me, you got great songs like the title track and Kings and Queens, but you’ve also got some pretty weak to bad tracks. And yes, Kramzer, The Hand That Feeds is head-scratchingly awful! 6. Rock in a Hard Place (1982) *I DESPISE Jailbait and Bolivian Ragamuffin, but an under-hated album overall 7. Done With Mirrors (1985) *yeah, their most middle of the road album. 8. Permanent Vacation (1987) *bad production, and I hate Ragdoll, and this and Pump reek of Desmond Child 9. Pump (1989) *I don’t like Love in an Elevator and Bruce Fairbairn doesn’t really do much for the album 10. Music from Another Dimension! (2012) *very generic 11. Aerosmith (1973) *yeah..believe it or not, I don’t really like the debut, and Dream On is a song I also never cared for. 12. Get a Grip (1993) 13. Nine Lives (1997) 14. Honkin’ on Bobo (2004) 15. Just Push Play (2001) *absolutely awful the whole way thru

I don't think there's anything wrong with "Just Push Play" i have a soft spot for that album since it got me into their music at the time. May not be their best but it has a lot of decent songs on it compared to "music from another dimension" Their best work probably would be "Pump" or "permanent vacation" but really most of their stuff is good. I think these guys probably just dont know what their talking about or aren't really into good rock music. Really down to opinion but i tend to disagree with them a lot and i am a musician.

I will rank until Pump, haven’t heard much after that. 1. Rocks (ranks high in all time albums regardless of artist) 2. Draw the Line 3. Toys in the Attic 4. Get Your Wings 5. Perm Vacation 6. Night In the Ruts 7. Aerosmith 8. Pump 9. Done With Mirrors 10. Rock in a Hard Place Bonus… Gems was 10 times better than Greatest Hits Most underrated song: Cheesecake Most overrated song: Angel Due to hearing loss and lifestyle changes I stopped listening to music shortly after what ever album followed pump and only heard a few tunes from it. The little I heard would have it above Rock in a hard place but not as high as I had Pump.,, if your favorite album was ranked low it’s only because the first 8 Albums were great and the 9th was pretty good.. the last one kinda sucked.. a lot. Sorry if I missed an Album, I am old and forgot.

Odd question: Years ago there was a upload of "Home Tonight" here on KZbin with something after it. Not sure exactly how to describe it but in the vein of "Boogie Man" from the album Get a Grip. Sort of instrumental ambient piece. Not that long either. Anyone know what I am talking about? I am not sure it was something from Aerosmith but might be. Would gladly hear it again.
