Honest but unpopular opinion - Chennai need to have emergency equipments and an ILS on secondary runway. As seen on the 30th december, winds were usually at 330° (northwest) so one of the secondary would've been helpful if the ILS was been there. Just how mumbai airport's secondary runway is equipped with all the emergency equipments in case if the main runway is unavailable or weathers are worse but not that much which would lead to a closure. In past 3 years, Mumbai hadn't seen a single cyclone but if the conditions are likely they switch to secondary runway 14/32 (mostly towards 14 as it contains an ILS unline its other end) Also last june, they used their secondary runway 14 in nights which is the rare phenomena. Ig chennai needs to have some improvement in its secondary runway standards

thats not how flights and airports usually work , pilots always have alternate destinations during bad weather before hand , but they try to attempt to land at their desired location if visibility is just under the radar and they can spot the runway, this helps in less congestion of airports and less delays just think if all flights diverted to bengaluru then bengaluru will have more air traffic and more delay there till they can see runway they can attempt to land with 2 go arounds available to them , after 2 go arounds the rules tell them to divert to other airports , in this case it is mostly , bengaluru , trichy and Coimbatore ( need to select 3)
