Thales isn't a British company though. It's radar division is predominantly if not exclusively Dutch. And the main company itself is French. The British accent of the guy lending his voice to this video might have given you the impression it was British, but that's mostly becaue the Dutch can sometimes have a bit of a thick accent ;-)

Britain, United States, and Germany all made quantum leaps in radar technology in the 1930/1940 period. Germany had a phased array search radar, Mamut, that was used operationally in WWII. In addition, German Small Wurzburg radar systems targeted allied aircraft and directed anti-aircraft batteries as well as aircraft mounted search and targeting radars on a number of fighters. The English Chain Home system was effective, but was fairly rudimentary for it's time.

In terms of hypersonic projectiles, the radar refresh rate needs to be higher, or the method needs to change.
@BlueRice

it depends. they have helicopter that have extended radar to detect incoming threat over the horizon. the sm400 used mini phase array antenna. the rate it scan the air space is fast. the real problem if the hypersonic missile near the computer have very little chance to predict its course. also, the human reflex would have a hard time if the missile should be eliminated. you cant asked the commander fast enough if they have the green light to press the button to shoot it down. it could be anything flying toward them or away from them. should they used millions dollar anti missile to shoot it down or used a cheaper missile. the best course of action is survey your area with helicopter and such. so you dont have to rely on detecting short coming missile threat.

You know, I even thought about joining the Legion at one point because I wasn't liking law school at all then. I wanted to be a soldier, but not just any soldier. So, I have great admiration for the Foreign Legion. To make a long story short, I finished law school, then I met a beautiful woman and we married. I stayed in America and had kids. I absolutely do not take Iran lightly. Iranians can be great people and their culture is ancient and more than worthwhile, but their present government seems very eager to kill Americans - and Israelis too. They want to be our enemies and I believe in giving people like that what they want. They don't speak for all Iranians either. Many Iranians have ties to America and they do not share their government's view of this country. I like military technology too, but I don't pretend to begin to know what someone like you does. @pieterveenders9793
@pieterveenders9793 2 жыл бұрын
@@sean70729 It is mostly aviation sensors (predominantly radar) where Raytheon and Northrop Grumman excel at and are leaders in. Thales' subdivision Thales Netherlands (which was formerly Signaal) is pretty much exclusively focused on naval sensors, mostly radar, and dominate that field. Signaal produced the first digital radar in the world, the first AESA radar, and also the Goalkeeper CIWS, the superior cousin of the Phalanx. Goalkeeper isn't just superior because it uses a 30mm multi-barreled cannon versus the 20mm one of Phalanx, but it's the sensors and signal processing which make Goalkeeper so much better. While the Phalanx can simultaneously track up to 6 different targets, Goalkeeper can track up to 18, and Goalkeeper has had that capability from the very start when it came out in the early 80's while Phalanx originally was only able to track one target at a time and didn't introduce its multiple tracking capability untill it's much more recent upgrades in if I remember correctly 1998. Additionally, Goalkeeper has a much more accurate dual-band dual radar which provides it with unparalleled accuracy. The accuracy is so good that it generally hits an incoming supersonic sea-skimming missile within the first 5-6 rounds. In fact the Dutch Royal Navy has so much faith in its capabilities that somewhere during the 90's two supersonic sea-skimming missiles with dummy warheads were fired on a fully crewed Dutch Royal Navy ship to prove its capabilities. The engagement was filmed with ultra slow-motion camera's, and on that footage you can clearly see that the 1st round fired at the first missile only barely misses, landing in the sea, but the 2nd round already scores a direct hit destroying the missile (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHSrdZ2FeN6crrc). The SMART-L long range search radar and it's variant the S1850M are especially good and have been equipped on many NATO warships (among others of Denmark, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, UK, Italy & France), though the best is exclusively in Dutch hands at the moment. While most search radars have a range of about 400 km, and SMART-L originally had that as well, Thales Netherlands' improvement extended that to 2000 km. No navy on earth has that capability, in fact our radar has 4-5x the detection range of every other navy in existence. On top of that it's a LPI (low probability of intercept) radar and highly resistent to ECM and capable of detecting stealth threats as well. Our warships have a Dutch equivalent to AEGIS, which is even interoperable with AEGIS ships, such as those of the US Navy, with the difference that ours can detect ballistic missiles at 4-5x the distance as US Navy ships and either calculate a fire solution and intercept it ourselves, or we can relay it over the air to another NATO ship if it has a better fireing solution and let it take the shot. In fact we practised it many times by now (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHSrdZ2FeN6crrc). The US Navy does have a somewhat comparable capability, they also have an ESA radar for BMD with a 2000 km range like our updated SMART-L.... except it's literally a gigantic floating oil rig with a massive radome on top of it. My uncle was a NCO in the Dutch Royal Navy who retired a few years ago and he mentioned a joint test carried out by our Royal Navy and that of the US. A ballistic missile was fired at 1000+ km or so and the challenge was who could detect it first, your navy or ours. Not only did we detect it first, but our SMART-L didn't even skip a beat while doing so, it simultaneously tracked said ballistic missile and remained providing 360 degree coverage and tracking everything else in that 4000 km diameter dome over the ship. That US radar on the other hand would apparently only rotate 360 degree as it was scanning, but as soon as it did finally detect that ballistic missile it would stop rotating and aim the radar in its direction in order to track the target, only following said target while it was moving through space, thus making the radar completely useless when it came to all its order surveillance duties. When my uncle told me that I initially thought "no, it can't be, this sounds too wild, the US using a massive oil rig with a gigantic radome on it which they had to tow out to sea at a snail's pace in fear of it tipping over in rough seas, and it not even being able to do multiple simultaneous surveillance tasks, while our radar is compact enough it easily fits on top of one of our frigates and can do so much more and better than what the US has". But no it indeed was legit, you can find it in naval news sites with a bit of searching. That massive oil-rig mounted radar is this btw (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea-based_X-band_Radar). Thales Netherlands makes a bunch of different state of the art naval radars and has made them for a century now, so there are many other groundbreaking radars and other products I didn't even mention in the list. But if you're interested in seeing some more of Thales Netherlands I suggest you watch the video where Naval News visited their facility in Hengelo, the Netherlands (kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGKTq2aIlq-jrrs).
