I have no way of convincing you that I made this, but I made this! It was 2012 or 2013 or something - and I was in grad school in my mid twenties, and I'd recently become a dad and I was burnt out and fucking bored. I made the Singapore/Harbor Is Yours Track first - just for fun, and because I wanted to merge the nautical themes. I then started matching up the other tracks thinking about how they would merge thematically. One of the things Aes tends to do is put really dark lyrics with funky bright beats, which adds to the puzzle-like quality of his songs ... and that's his creative prerogative. But I think the music and words combos here bring out the themes of the songs in a way that Aes wouldn't do so directly. For example the original beat for Fumes is quite funky whereas putting it with All The World is Fumes really shines a spotlight on how tragic Fumes is (All The World is Fumes is a song about someone killing their partner, if I recall correctly). So if you haven't really looked at the album from that POV - take a look at how the themes of the songs fit together ["Temptation" with the Aes song about shoplifting/kleptomania, for example]. From a production POV I really wanted to come at it from the idea of - what would Tom actually do if he was making a hiphop album? Which is why there are so many post-Swordfishtrombones-style added percussions. They're played in a nuschool hiphop way in terms of drum patterns, but there are a lot of additional percussions which aren't from either source - so not a pure mashup album in that sense. I think I'd heard that N.A.S.A. song where he featured with Kool Keith and I thought "ok cool collab but what would a Waits hiphop album actually sound like". I don't think my mixes here are great but they obviously do it for enough of you folks for this to be sitting here with quarter of a million views! When "Tom Shall Pass" went out on Bandcamp I set it to free, because it was a white label. Then I hit the free download limit after it went viral on blogs and eventually ended up having to take it down. So these copies on KZbin are currently the only places you can listen to it now. I haven't made anything similar since, nowadays I mostly make psychadelic lofi type stuff under the name Tony Westcliff & The Abominations. Like I said, no way of proving any of the above, but there it is. I look forward to a million "cool story bro"s.

I was at the Rotten Robbies in Sebastopol California, a local gas station chain, when Tom Waits came up to me and asked if the music bumping out of my open trunk/exposed subwoofers was indeed Aesop Rock? I said yes, he's my favorite rapper, and also, I know your son Casey. I also scratch on turntables. He replied I love Aesop Rock, he's my favorite rapper too. I told him that I'd like to jam sometime and he proceeded to write my name and number down in his address book. I never heard from him, and I'm sure anyone reading this thinks I'm just some crazy person making up a ludicrous story, but it really happened & finding this video is quite the strange coincidence to me, as I'm sure you could imagine. I've also met Aesop Rock, at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, & when I discussed psychedelics in a manic manner, I believe I might have frightened him and have felt guilty ever since. Two true stories, believe it or not... I could give a s***

The individual who mashed these two musical visionaries up has a creative tip in their psyche. I applaud them for doing so. Alas, I would love if Aes would release Accapellas from his first three LP's. I'd take a bash at mashing them up with some other lesser known tracks out in the ethos.

Such a good concept, but I feel that a golden opportunity was passed by on the execution. Why mashup Tom Waits without his signature voice? If the songs had had more of an interplay between the two singers instead of the lyrics of one and the music of the other, this would have been a fantastic album. Keep it up and I'll be looking forward to the next work that comes out from this mashup artist.
@notactive539310 жыл бұрын
good point. I noticed a lot of the songs where Waits' vocals are used, they seem to fit lyrically/thematically (e.g. Singapore with the track where Aes is rapping about pirates) so maybe sometimes the producer just left Waits vocals out because he was trying to make them fit thematically. Or maybe a chorus on every tune would've seemed too poppy or something.
@benjaminchristianson258410 жыл бұрын
Joe Baxter-Webb Yeah. I noticed it in songs like all the world is Fumes, where Tom sings about men doing stupid things (on behalf of a woman if I remember correctly), and rock is rapping about a guy who made a dumb decision to let a girl move in with him or something. They can both be kind of difficult to interpret sometimes, ha.
@notactive539310 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Christianson hehe yeh. I think a lot of Aesop's fanbase are just people who love interpreting lyrics. All The World is Green is a scene in a musical type show where the protagonist kills his lover for cheating on him. Different sort of thing but I guess the bittersweetness is there.
