lol, we are also kpop and SM stans for over 10 years but music remains subjective either way. We're "used to it" too, but that doesn't mean you have to necessarily like it.

Ah ok well just making a point too cause it seems like others think we don't know how SM works and that's why we were a bit taken aback by the structure 😅 For sure this song structure is very SM, but definitely not done as smoothly as others

Just putting our 2 cents out there too - seen several people try to justify the song just because its SM and they're "SM stans", but we hope people can also learn how to admit they don't have to like a song from a group they like~

@@kjunkies yes, say it louder! I'm an EXO, NCT, and RV fan but I don't like all their songs. And I really like Zimzalabim or One (Monster & Infinity), or We Go Up whose structure is similar to this song but I don't really like Next Level though I listened to it a dozen times now.

I was missing this type of music on Kpop, for me it worked more than Zimzalabim (another great song). The culmination was the voices of Ning and Winter (even with Karina and Giselle's rap duo), I believe that was the reason why I liked the song so much. I'm excited about the next steps of these four.

I didn't think the song transition THAT jarring. Maybe I'm showing my age here but There was a trend in early 2000s in hiphop and R&B music videos where artists would actually put a different song on their album into another MV as a transition and it was a nice flow change. For example, look up missy elliot's MVs from her 'so addictive' album like 'get ur freak on' or 'one minute man' and they do the 'song switchup' i'm describing, and in those songs it was even more jarring than what I think Aespa did here. I dunno I didn't mind it. The whole time the song was slightly changing it up from getting too boring and repetitive...maybe it sounds too much like they took two B sides and mashed them into one Mv....but i dont mind lol i like both songs
@kjunkies3 жыл бұрын
So I grew up in the early 2000s and love Get Ur Freak On and I personally think the song shift there is more cohesive in my opinion (maybe I'm just used to missy's song since I grew up with it lol) I just think the song shifting to the more jazzy, vocal heavy part in Next Level could've been done cleaner But other than that the song isn't bad tbh - Nat
@edo273 жыл бұрын

I feel like people who quickly compare this to ZZZ & IGAB don't understand that while those songs were different styles meshed together, the sections played off each other and transitioned into each other well. Next Level was 3 different styles that were just chopped and glued together with no obvious plan to the final sound [example: how the TVXQ/BoA section just falls away and goes back into the first part with no energy or elevation, and then drags on for a little too long]. I really wanted to like this song (I liked Black Mamba and LOVED Forever). I was expecting this to be aespa's Ice Cream Cake/Dumb Dumb break-out era that would cement them and their sound...and I guess it did. Just in the wrong way.

I love the honest yet respectful reactions. Appreciate it. Thank you for reacting to aespa. When you said wtf did you just watch that was the same reaction I had. I was shocked but surprisingly I liked the song at first listen compared to Black Mamba. Maybe I'm used to SM's style of combining different genres in one song. I have to agree also with Giselle getting a rap line of her own so she could standout more. I really like the KariSelle rap part but I wish they also gave Giselle a solo rap. Will wait for that in the future songs.

Finally, an honest reaction... I absolutely hate this song, and I've been a kpop fan since 2008 so I get the comparisons to I Got a Boy, but I still hate it lol. I actually like the Fast and Furious version that isn't all over the place, but the way these girls sing the admittedly somewhat catchy part of "I'm on the Next Level" feels really slow and boring to me. It starts to feel like they're just repeating it over and over, then it gets less and less catchy as the song goes on. The song overall is like someone's very first attempt at making a mashup and failing miserably at it. I'm not usually this critical of most music and definitely not kpop... but I don't think I've ever outright hated a song this much. It makes me angry for the girls, although it seems like people are at least talking themselves into liking it. If you look on Reddit, though, I think you'll see more honest responses.
