Yeah coniferous woods (like pine) contain resin acids like plicatic and abietic acid which can cause damage to lungs of people who work with those woods in sawmills, and have also been shown to cause problems in some animals too, so they're not recommended for use with pets, or humans really

The max animal you can have with pine shavings is some people cover their dog's main outdoor potty area with it, so very little time is spent there. I wouldn't even use it in a horse's stall because it's not really that absorbent anyway.

The "spoiled" betta fish reminds me of that one episode of Wife Swap where one of the husbands was just awful. He was a toxic masculinity guy, and was abusive to his daughter, causing her to fear him. He hunted for sport, and had this big thing on his property for that, and a kennel with so many hunting dogs. The dogs were kept in meh conditions, with a senior dog being uncomfortable. The visiting wife insisted that the senior dog be given a proper dog bed and he was, with the husband grumbling about how the senior dog was given the Taj Mahal. Yeah, a senior dog is "spoiled" because he gets a comfortable dog bed. I imagine he was still stressed out from all the other barking dogs and the general environment.

You know I wouldn't even mind the neon substrates if people gave the fish enrichment and properly sized, filtered, temperature controlled tanks with frequent water changes. I will say that hanging plant is not a fishbowl it's just an actual plant pot that's what they are, you aren't supposed to put fish in them but they do make really nice plant pots either for airplants, or wanting to see the root system off the plant (that can actually look really cool!) or as here (WITHOUT THE FISH!!) a plant in water. Glass vases and pots actually work really well for plants that want all water which some do thrive better in.

That last one is actually pretty cute for just houseplants by themselves, just make sure you have a good strong hook and that you know how to set it up so it stays put. Many many years ago I was a betta bowl person, had several of them all over my apartment that were cleaned on a regular basis. This was back before there was really very much fish knowledge out there and box stores like the one I worked at pretty much perpetuated the idea that they could live that way. I don't keep fish anymore but there for a while I was doing a 5-gallon setup with a filter for my bettas, its really not so much work and won't take up a lot of space but your fish will be much happier in there. Get some live aquatic plants going and you've got perfection.
@BankruptMonkey

I am really glad people have access to actually good pet care knowledge online now, I remember looking desperately for the best care information online in the early 2010's and they just kept telling me a 2x3 cage for a single guinea pig was "good enough" care (it's not, it's very abusive). Now actual animal rescues and charities provide good recommendations to new owners online, so they can get better info than pet stores just looking to sell stuff and not caring about animal welfare are telling people.
@LuthienNightwolf
@LuthienNightwolf Жыл бұрын
@@BankruptMonkey Geez yeah, I don't think a single cage they sell at Petsmart is actually good for any of the animals they're sold for. The hamster cages are a joke and the cages sold as guinea pig/rabbit cages are way too small. We know so much more about the actual needs of small animals now that I don't know why those cages are even still sold/manufactured. I have a double critter nation for my rats and I've never even seen one of those in stores.

My comments throughout the video: I love that you don't tell your birds to stop chirping, and they're free to come and sit on your shoulder and lap mid-recording! This is my first time watching one of your videos, and it's a great first impression! ^U^ BTW, do you have snakes? They're the most lovely creatures, I swear! They never bark, they aren't super clingy, they can't fly, they're low maintenance, and you can sometimes have a snake scarf! I'm making a snake bag for my snake (muffin) and I took into account the amount of space he'd want, the textures of the fabric, how to keep it warm, where the bag would rest for maximum Muffin comfort, and I can't imagine people not doing that for their animals. I heard that pine needles are super acidic, so I would definitely research whether or not it was OK for the water! I love avatar too! It's so nice to find another person who isn't hating on it, tbh... Bro, even in MINECRAFT I give my turtles a bunch of space, some land, food, and decorations (but not too many). How do you manage to screw up so hard that you leave your turtle gasping for air, completely landless, sunless, and spaceless? Would YOU appreciate that tank? I think the plant hates that fish bowl as much as you do, and I think the fish like it less. How do you even manage that... also, pro tip, if you can't see the fish through the water, you should probably clean it. I don't think fish probably appreciate living in a tank with bright lights that change colors... I wouldn't.... A while ago, I had the brilliant idea to take some river water from a river where I live, put it in a plastic bin with one half full of dirt (also from where we live) and start growing algae. I did not put fish in it. I did not put a turtle in it. The most I put in it was a few bugs, and after those started dying I didn't even do that. Now, I have a healthy little algae thingy with an ecosystem of tiny critters that were in the sample of river water and mud that I got. I DID put a few (three) shells in it, but I think it's probably fine bc the critters have been doing really well for about a year now. The land portion of the tank has two spider plant guys to help filter things a little bit, and They're doing really well too! I feel like that goes to show that you don't have to have fish to have a cool water-ecosystem. :)

AVNJ has been looking at these horrible fish tanks too, specifically the Toilet Fish Tanks. All the tanks you looked at are beyond AWFUL! The Hydro Betta Love/Pathos Mixture one set off my anxiety, because what if that thing falls & smashes?! 😣 And that poor axolotl! It should NOT be in a tiny fish bowl! Fish bowls are terrible, even for fish! That one with the bedes in a washing up bowl with the three shells & one fish in it is something primary school kids & toddlers play with, not a home for aquatic animals! I played with that kind of stuff at my primary school. It only has plastic fish, not real fish.

And do background checks on the family and vets. When my girlfriend 's niece Raja adopted Kobe from the pet store she had to get background checks and so did her family and the vets she had to do random home visits with the owners of the place she got him and she had to do check ins at the place she got him so they can make sure she still had him and she was properly taken care of him. The most likely reason for red algae is introduction of contaminated plants or a bag of fish from a store tank with red algae. This can come in as some small filaments floating in the water, as water born spores or perhaps in the digestive tract of fishes. aparently they feed on iron which gives them their red color.

In elementary school there was a boy in my class who had like five baby turtles in a little critter container and he left them in the back of the room over a week long break and they all died because the water dried up and no food etc. the teacher had us wait outside so she could move the dead turtles to a trash can i assume so no one could see them

I think I know why they put salt in with that poor betta. There is a lie that I have seen on the internet that putting a bit of salt in the water with your freshwater fish will ward off sickness by killing pathogens and parasites. Which it might, but it will also kill your freshwater fish
@rambbler
@rambbler Жыл бұрын
To be fair, putting freshwater fish in slightly saline water temporarily will kill off fungal infections and parasites because while the fish can handle the salinity change the parasites and fungus are highly specialized and will die in salt. Obviously, not necessary unless there's an issue and it's only for a short amount of time while in treatment.

It’s not a myth, (PURE) epsom salt and aquarium salt can cure illness and doesn’t cause harm. Table salt will cause harm though iirc.

@@eph2vv89only1way depends on what you’re using the salt for. I was using epsom salt for relieve, since this fish was on his deathbed anyways. It worked before I was able to properly euthanize him. I’ve also used salt with bacteria infections. It takes about a week. That fish developed dropsy so no one knows if his life span was hindered.

Pretty sure the one around 6:30 with red algae is saltwater and that is corraline algae which can be a number of colors, most commonly a reddish purple, purple, or pink. Corraline eventually coats everything in a saltwater tank though you usually scrape the glass to keep it off

The people who try to use animals as 'decor' I think they should be trapped in something similar to the crappy tank/ cage For example: Being left in a small filthy tank with a tank on top Aka this, I think 2:25 / 13:55

This kind of stuff makes me so sad, especially because proper cages/tanks can be *so* gorgeous and bring so much to a room. It’s like a cat owning household that has no cat stuff, like what purpose does that even accomplish? Why would you rather have a shitty tiny tank than a gorgeous thriving planted ecosystem?

I have red algae in my tanks that I can't seem to get rid of. It just sprouted in my new tank, too. It isn't nearly that bad, because I scrape it off the glass, but I can't get it off my live plants. I think it's the amount of light I have, but I'm not sure. Also, pretty sure Pothos plant is toxic to Bettas, so these _"aesthetic"_ tanks are a double-edged sword for them.

I saw a yt short the other say of 2, not one, TWO betta fish in a tiny tank that u could probs only fit about 4 hands in, HORRIBLE. It absolutely disgusts me, if your going to get a pet, TAKE. CARE.
