Aeto Beats Tonga in 1989 Fautasi Race

The Aeto of Pago Pago finally beat Tonga and brought the championship back home. This was a glorious victory for the Aeto and all of American Samoa.

Historical win for the One and Only fautasi in Am.Samoa and Samoa who won the "ultimate champion fautasi race" of the century! Not only they won all the Am.Samoa fautasi, and the ones from Upolu Samoa, but also the fautasi from Tonga! I DON'T BELIEVE ANY MORE FAUTASI IN THIS LIFETIME WILL EVER ACCOMPLISH THAT ANYMORE!! The Tui Vava’u and Tu’i Haapai was already dismantled to compete in a different race.The King heard that there were a lot of complaints about the two Tongan boats keep on taking firs and second.So he put the crew of the Tu’i Vava’u and Tu’i Ha’apai to a different competition and got the a new crew from the island of Eua and called them Tu’i Niua and Tu’i Eua but they were still racing in the same two boats,that the Tu’i Vava’u and Tu’i Ha’apai used!

Tu’i vavau and Tui haapai been winning this since they invited Tonga. Samoans asked to swap boats with the Tongans and they still lost. Back then the king told every Tongan that if they lose, they have to swim back to Tonga 😂😂 no one lost that day

86-88 tui vavau was undefeated (well tui haapai won in 88 but it took the tui vavau boat taking in water for that to happen (real talk 🤪)

I think the commentator still called them Tui Vava’u and Tu’i Haapai but this is the Tu’i ‘Eua and Tu’i Niua using the same boat but never changed the Sign on the boat.At this time the King gave this competition to the Eua and Niua people.The Tu’i Vava’u and Tu’i Haapai crew was force by the King to compete in a different boat competition.With a smaller crews and smaller boats

The only reason we were able to beat the Tongan boats was because King Taufa'ahau decided to let the people of Eua and Niua row their boats. The Tongan crews that year were younger and lighter. I was a member of the Iseula crew that year and swapped boats with them a couple of times during practices that year. The Tongan crews always used our field in Fagatogo during those years and the usual crews when Tonga dominated were older, bigger and looked like a battalion of Tongan marines. The big advantage that the Vava'u and Ha'apai had was their crews were training and living together all year round until the races. It took us at least 2 months to prepare a crew and most of our training was done in the evenings when everyone got off work

The video of when Tonga beat Samoa in 1987 is on youtube on Le Faleoo's page under 1987's Silver Jubilee celebrations. But why hasn't Tonga competed in our fautasi race? Did we stop sending them invitations? lol I agree with the other poster, we need more competition and rivalry to make fautasi race interesting again. Everyone's on fiber glass now, so no excuse if we or they lose.

This a mistake! This is not the Tu’i Ha’apai and Tu’i Vava’u!!! The commentators might still think it’s the Tu’i Vava’u and the Tu’i Ha’apai.This year,the King had disbanded the Tu’i Haapai and Tu’i Vava’u to compete in Hawaii canoe racing since he heard there is a chance the Fautasi organisers were going to no longer invite the Tu’i Vava’u and Tu’i Haapai due to their dominance. So the King called upon the people of Eua and Niu to get rowers form two teams,the Tu’i Eua and Tu’i Niua rowing the same boat.The label “V” and “ H” was never changed.The Tu’i Eua crew row the Tu’i Vava’u boat and the Tu’i Niua row the Tu’i Haapai boat! The proof to this is the uniform.Vava’u’s colour is black or white.Haapai is red or Maroon.Eua is yellow and look at the uniform of those they called Tu’i Vava’u,they are in yellow proving that it’s the Tu’i Eua! My brother was rowing for Tu’i Ha’apai and he was one of those that weren’t longer selected in 89 to go to Hawaii due to his age! Check on 24:20 that female commentator prove what I am telling you all! It’s the Tu’i Eua crew rowing the Tu’i Vava’u boat!!!!

I heard the tongan boat was row by the tkngan marines which make sense why they won and train all year round. They have the advantage of picking from the whole of tonga compare to these villages boat.. Race a Samoan pick military boat i dont think Tonga can compete

Apiesa Kinikini I’m from Pago Toko, I ain’t worried bout who complain and all that other personal feeling bull!! 86,87 was all close race with the AETO not even far, but this race we dust all the boat by far like 10 fautasi length and we been doing this since in 60s n 70s, 80s and in the 90s!!
