I feel one of TK biggest problems is his inability to hold off on the ‘dream matches’. Rather than wait for them to come up with a natural feel he just shoe horns them onto a card for the sake of it. Most recent example being Osprey v Richochet. That should not have happened for at least 6 months. Build to it, make us desperate for it before giving it to us

This! And it tends to oversaturate the content, but in a weird way. Like sure, on one hand, they have a lot of ppv quality matches on regular TV, and that can be cool. But most of the time it brings me back to Syndrome from the Incredibles, when he said "When everyone is super, no one will be". Having a dream match every week takes a bit of the air out of three ppv.

AEW has given up on its two biggest storylines over the past year. The AEW Devil story was just dropped, not adapted, after Cole’s injury, and the Elite’s takeover of AEW died out with a whimper, even after writing off Tony Khan. So it makes me hesitant to put any stock into what Mox is currently doing, because “Why would I invest in this? Chances are you’ll give up on it in 2 months” Even if something isn’t going perfectly, at least attempt to salvage it, and see it through. The Bucks were supposed to be in charge at one point, but what did they really even do? Give Jack Perry a title match?

Yeah I've been feeling this way about PPV bookings for almost this whole year especially. Its like once they decided to do monthly PPVs they're just rushing to fill in a card with only 1 or 2 matches and stories solidified ahead of time. I'm liking the product more than i was in the first half of the year but thats still a major problem.

This Schizophrenic Booking is what makes AEW less interesting for me, because doing matches for the sake of doing matches (and sometimes, random bloody matches) is not attractive when you don't have any kind of story going on. This is why Punk and Drew was so awesome, and i know it takes time, but the effort will be worth it.

Hangman vs Swerve was just as good as Punk/Drew. I will agree with you that the storytelling in WWE is just done too well compared to AEW. A guy burning a house vs legitimately robbing each other of championship opportunities. Hard to compare those stories in 2024.

It's not schizophrenic booking, it's smart booking. A few matches on the card don't make a lot of sense but those are the ones that are just there to fill up the card. Bryan Danielson vs. Jon Moxley, Mariah May vs. Willow Nightingale, Will Osprey vs. Ricochet vs. Konosuke Takeshita all are built on something, that being doing things one way versus another, sticking up for a friend, and who is the best at doing flips but also jealousy. Y'all have to pay better attention and if you're confused, go back and try to figure things out.

And because Dynamite is the main show and is the one primarily watched by the majority of the audience and fans they don't see any build that is added to a few that may or may not happen on a show like rampage or collision. Not really sure what the solution here is, but it's not the fans responsibility to go back and look things up. That is the show's responsibility to remind people regularly about things.

"Where the best wrestle" never made sense. Fans have turned away from AEW and that style of "wrestling". Meltzer keeps telling everyone they're out of touch if they don't like the indie style AEW replicates and talks about all these great matches, but the majority of wrestling fans disagree with him. NXT is more popular than AEWs main show.

WWE is rightly criticised for it’s fumbling of the women’s divisions. But it’s still far and away better than AEW’s. Wrestledream currently has 11 matches, only one of them is a women’s match, and it was quickly put together a week before the show. Storm/May was excellent, but it feels like they’ve given up on Mariah almost immediately. At least WWE has some sort of a build to their women’s matches. Nia/Bayley, Iyo/Bayley, had two months of set-up even Rhea/Becky was teased 6 months before Mania. Liv/Rhea has burned some people (not me personally), but WWE are invested and keep adding to that feud. Just some level of investment in the long term for them would be an improvement.

My feeling is that, AEW does this massive debuts for people and then its either they get pushed heavily into a feud with a top guy, or they pop on tv for a few weeks have a few matches, and its just kinda like huh....haven't seen much of [insert former wwe/njpw star here] in awhile. If they could actually build up long feuds and give these stars notable time all would be fine, but it seems AEW just waits for big moments and tries to get something out of it for a few weeks.

He's cutting the same promo every week, and in this build they handicap Darby. 2 months ago he was #1 contender for Perrys belt and for the world title and he got destroyed by Jack Perry and then by Mox. Mox talking about some diplomacy has failed now I want war like he's Japan in the run up to Pearl Harbor

You can skip the in ring match to the last minute and just following the storyline for weekly television. However you can't skip the storylines and just follow the matches (9/10th of them are predictable). That's what made the attitude era "format" so memorable.

Before you got there in the video i was saying to myself all AEW needs is 3-4 months of consistent booking because that's when it's at its best. I know the weather has changed a lot recently with flights and bookings, but they gotta find ways to keep other stories compelling. My largest gripe about AEW PPVs is the last week booking is very VKM-like in that we get 3-4 matches added to the card, just to fill time and they rarely add any value to the card. I want WrestleDream to be phenomenal, and believe it will be, but there isn't the hype around it that I feel there should be.

TK used to write way ahead, and that meant if there was an injury or a new signing or anything goes against the plan, they just kinda tread water until they could book themselves out of it. I just think there’s been a few too many of those recently that’s caused them to change plans. I don’t think Bryan was supposed to win at All In. But they’ve booked around that really well, the Blackpool Combat Club story has been awesome. I don’t think Mone was supposed to either. I don’t think they knew Storm would be taking a break. There’s clearly something weird happening in the women’s division. Stories about Hayter and Baker not getting on anymore. I think what they wanted to do was Britt beats Mone, Britt vs Hayter for the TBS title. And the story continues with Storm and May. But then drama happens, so Hayter gets put in this weird feud with Saraya. Britt can’t win because of drama and suspensions, so Mone wins. You can’t do Mone vs Willow again, and Stat needs a win in this feud, so Stat wins. And then they’re like “what faces can we put against these 3 heels that won their feuds?” Too many heels, we need a new face, fuck it, Statlander.

I live in the Seattle/Tacoma area, and the whole reason I'm not going to WrestleDream this year was because of the severe lack of matches until the last possible minute, and now my schedule doesn't allow me to make the hour long drive to Tacoma to see it. If they had more stuff booked or even hinted at ahead of time I 100% would have gone, especially with how the card turned out, but I didn't want to dedicate my time and money to a show that may or may not be worth it.

Semi-related....BOTH AEW and WWE MUST rethink booking. Call this a hot take if you want but its true given the massive flaws on both show. If you think HHH is a fantastic booker...explain all 3 tag divisions and the womans division on Raw (outside of Liv and Rhea) to me since Mania. How compelling have these been? My solution? Head bookers for each division. HHH as head booker to put the show together. Think about it. One person whose sole job is to make the Raw tag division compelling and awesome. They can tell their saga story that culminates at Mania with a plan to build teams, flesh out characters and do everything you'd do with any given top of the card mens singles division on Raw. Tag wrestling on Raw is less of a focus so you set out ahead of time you have an average of 15 minutes per show to accomplish this...we'll give 4 PLE blow offs a year one being at Mania. Go. Repeat with womans tag, SD tag, womans Raw, SD Raw, etc. Tony Khan should do the same thing.

AEWs booking is weird. On one hand it's PPV are constantly rushed booking with cards that feel like matches are just flung together last minute. Yet on the other hand TK seems to have zero patience and burns through top match after top match to give them away for free on TV with little to no build- matches that cold easily have been slow built for a PPV (I e look at Ospreays booking ).

I will say this not trying to be super negative or toxic about AEW but it’s just not interesting at all and most the year minus a few feuds going into All in from being interesting. Mariah May-Toni Storm was great and Swerve-Hangman with Danielson in there all great MJF and Ospreay had its moments but other than that the shows just been bad. Statlander is a face and drops her manager after feuding with/turning on the biggest natural babyface in Willow. Also Willow lost to Statlander now she’s going for the world title makes no sense. Jamie Hayter returns on the all in pre show and is in a random feud on rampage with Saraya and now Penelope Ford. Britt Baker returned and had a lackluster match + feud with Mercedes who’s been ice cold. That’s just some of the women’s issues. The tag team division is non existent in AEW. The Elite storyline got changed and dropped and was just not it. Danielson faced Nigel with zero build not one face to face or mention of Nigel from Danielson. They dropped Danielson Darby because Bryan couldn’t compete but then he competed. We have random stories like Lance Archer being traded by Jake Roberts to Don Callis for Rush, Mortos, and Dralistico. We throw Will Ospreay vs Ricochet out there after 3 weeks of Ricochet being in the company with zero build. We got people like Starks and Wardlow doing nothing but sitting at home. The learning tree on TV every week. It’s just not good tv and I want it to be better.

I am not going to say that Inthink that you are 100% wrong because there is some definitely random stuff on this upcoming show. But, I also think that some of the criticism is misplaced. I don't really know if that is the word that I want to use. But, I can't think of another that better fits my feelings right now because 6/11 matches I wouldn't really call scattershot or out of the blue. The Takeshita Okada "tease" I think was more them reacting in ring to the fans being intrigued by it than any kind of tease that they were going to be facing each other. Takeshita was always a part of this Callis/Ospreay thing. The Darby stuff seems to be him taking what Mox said to heart and trying to level up after proving Mox right by losing and showing that he wasn't ready. The introduction of Brody was very quick, but that doesn't mean that it's entirely random or not part of a story either. With Hathaway and Statlander thing, I got the impression from SRS saying "there wasn't an option to continue that storyline" that there was some kind of backstage issue between them that resulted in the immediate separation of the two. I could be wrong, but those come across as very carefully chosen words to me. And you can't discount the Hurricane affecting travel plans and messing up story plans right in the middle of the build to this. So, I don't think that everything has fallen apart only four weeks after All Out. I just think that it's the same old same old with AEW. A mix of story and random and real world crap that comes up.

I don't watch AEW but I do see the reactions and general sentiment from fans. It seems like they suffer from the same problem WWE does in regards to stories quite a lot. I think they simply have too many PPVs/PLEs and trying to book a big match for each one doesn't allow for the stories to breath and grow from week to week on the TV show. They have to rush it to get to the big match to have it on the upcoming PPV. I wish they could pare back on PPVs and stuff but I understand completely why they can't really do that. It would also solve the issue of it feeling like they want to book a big match for TV that will pop a big rating but don't have the time to do that and also build a match for the PPV.

I always wondered what the end goal was for MJF as champ. It looked like a title vs title match with Punk but Adam Cole was put in an angle at around the same time. I have been turned off on AEW since Punk left. I think the Elite and Okada story was trash. It made no sense. They are EVPS. I noitce that I skip through a lot of it as well.

They are over-extending themselves, too many PPV’s for such a small company. I really wish they took an NXT Black and Gold approach, with focused, clear main stories that headline the PPV’s. My opinion, wrestling is better when you have multiple characters and stories intertwined. They rob those opportunities with so many 1 vs 1 programs and SO MANY TITLES.

Bryan Danielson vs. Nigel McGunniess was built around Bryan Danielson being too injured to compete and the fact that Bryan Danielson could never beat him when it mattered most. Darby Allin lost his title shot and threw out an open challenge to prove to everyone (especially Jon Moxley) he is ready to be AEW World Champion. Jack Perry's alliance with The Young Bucks as part of the new Elite only matters when a group of people try to take down The Elite. Other than that they go their separate ways which is better for their career. Konosuke Takeshita is clearly jealous of Will Osprey so for him to turn his attention to him for now isn't a problem, especially if Ricochet is supposed to win the International Championship from Will Osprey. Takeshia will be pinned here then go back to Okada and take the Intercontinental Championship in the Continental Classic. Kris Statlander vs. Mercedes Mone is only happening so Mercedes can be on the card, Kris Statlander will be the next AEW Women's World Champion or the following AEW Women's World Champion after defeating whoever beats Mariah May. There is a plan for everything Steve and it's not that hard to see, you just have to pay close attention and remember things people say and do.

hey maybe if you listened to the call, TK has been booking around hurricane issues, lots of wrestlers stuck, other ones helping hurricane recovery, like Edge and FTR. I mean Jacksonville was in the Path. There have been alot of changes and stressors lately with injuries and illnesses. He was frustrated too and when Edge said he was pulling bodies out of rubble with FEMA....kinda puts it in perspective

Khan has no booking ability as he has zero patience. Oh look at these new toy's I just got let's toss them together for a 5 star match. Great, but with almost no build, story it's just a bunch of meaningless moves. I am not invested as there is really no payoff aside from who 'wins'. And then he pulls 2 more rando names out of a hat and toss them in a match, rinse and repeat. And yes, before the AEW stans jump on me, there have been a FEW good stories like the Storm, May feud but what's going on with that? It's fizzled out as he saw something new and shiny and put his energy into that. I swear he has the memory and attention of a goldfish. Until Khan gets out of his own way, gets an actual booker NOTHING will change it will be week to week booking with the occasional good story being the exception not the rule. Even a broken clock is correct twice a day. Best thing for AEW is for Khan to realize he is just not good as head of creative and hire a Bubba ray, Dreamer, etc kind of person. But let's be honest he won't. His ego and being oblivious how bad he is won't allow that. So until that happens AEW will come off as little more than a hot mess indie promotion with a unlimited checkbook.

with a few years of hindsight, aew focusing on people with for lack of a better phrase high bone density instead of characters is probably the way to insure the company lasts longer, I guess they have an adult swim type of thought prosses when it comes to the real fan favorites like the dark order or danhausen, which would be to create or adopt the fan favorite but no promises if it will blossom and continue, I know AEW is technically indie but that's a very on brand turner move

It's a poor program all around. I gave up on SD a couple months ago due to its badly booked show since Mania. For the first time in four years I gave AEW another chance and have since quit that show again. I enjoyed it even less than SD. There are so many problems. It was shocking to me when I realized that SD by and large books characters and stories better than Dynamite. The reason I stopped watching SD was because it just felt like a show where they throw feuds out there with no stories. Don't be a fanboy and take this point 100% literal I know you can provide examples of character and story in the show. So can I...Hangman and Swerve. That's by far the exception to the norm. Meanwhile we get a long Ishii vs Hangman match cold to eat up practically a quarter of your show..you couldn't even do the SD thing of a 40 second build up to give the match some purpose before it. That's not the only cold match on the show but I can't remember the others and PLE was in two weeks...you're desperately short on time why aren't you build stories to get people invested? Well maybe this is only a problem because the two week turn around...surely they'll fix this for Wrestledream.... The other reason I left is the matches. But wrestling is subjective so its fine. For what its worth if I can no longer suspend disbelief you've lost me in a match. An example of this in WWE was Cody hitting two crossroads on KO and then KO taking control of the match by interrupting the 3rd crossroads. I guess crossroads are as devastating as your standard punch now. You lost me. Match is trash. WWE is doing this more often now too...Finn Balor just hit 3 stomps on Priest who responded with a single south of heaven to win his PLE match...bullshit. I'm using WWE examples here but this is literally 90% of the AEW matches I've seen. Insane moves that look devastating and should put matches away but we're 1/4 the way through the match and there's 7 more spots like that planned before the underwhelming finish by comparison. Rinse and repeat constantly.
