If they really wanted Cole to be babyface again, they could've just had another heel besides MJF start a feud once Cole was healed. Just don't mention the prior story during the feud, and come back to MJF down the line if you want. Or if they want to be fancy, the heel would ask Cole a very simple question. "What the hell is wrong with you?" One of the biggest signings debuting on one of AEW's most remembered PPVs. Alongside Danielson. Danielson became world champion and has had historical matches in AEW. The best Cole did was win a tournament 3 years ago, and hold a tag title for one of his buddies. Cole betrayed The Elite, he betrayed ReDragon, all to climb a ladder he fails time and time again to reach the top of. If he didn't even mention Undisputed Kingdom when he first spoke, the heel could ask "How long until you betray your Kingdom and get nothing out of it in the long run? I mean they already failed the Samoa Joe plot. Where's the big man you punished months ago for failing you? Exactly. Didn't even bother to go after Swerve, Danielson, or Moxley. Don't say 'I won't betray Undisputed Kingdom. They're my friends'. So was Kyle during recovery and look what happened." Jay White was in that ring when he first got put on the shelf. All Cole has done is have other people fight the battles he should be having while Jay has won multiple titles and has the drive to get more. Since Cole's come to AEW, a dozen other wrestlers were signed that blew people away. Not because of some story times, but after the damn bell rang. Cole won a title in every company, but once he got to AEW, nothing but participation trophies. How does a 40 year old Roderick get an AEW title faster than you? And now none of your crew has any gold. A heel should show him just how much Cole has become all talk and no wrestling. Whether he overcomes that immediately in a short redemption story, or gets squashed and has to work his way back to prominence and earn the crowd's cheers, either would be much better than trying to retcon his MJF feud.

Whatever you can say about the resolution to last year's storyline, you could at least say it was possible due to the characters at play here. MJF being notorious, and Cole having abandoned 2 heel teams in AEW to further his own goals. The only reason Cole even seemed like a face is because of that whole Jericho/Outcasts thing, and it was his first return after healing. Him still being a heel and hiding it? Makes sense. This though? Unless all of Undisputed Kingdom are so incredibly egotistical and dense they can't see the writing on the wall, it doesn't work. Yet if the twist is that they ARE that dense, none of them should hold a title again.
