Shreya Padukone, Teja Sangeetha - Species specific fish welfare campaigns: Lessons from on-ground research in India
Shreya and Teja highlight the detrimental impacts of certain aquaculture practices on wetland biodiversity, environmental conservation, and food safety. Drawing from their research in India and Indonesia, they focus on species-specific welfare issues, such as the harmful practices in catfish aquaculture, and emphasize the need for targeted campaigns to improve welfare standards. Their work, supported by the Fish Welfare Initiative, Ethical Seafood Research, and World Animal Protection, advocates for stronger regulations and animal welfare standards.
Vivek Rachuri - Challenges to promote fish welfare in India: A focus on carp welfare
Vivek discusses the challenges in promoting fish welfare in India, where the majority of aquaculture production involves carp species like Rohu, Catla, and Mrigal. Despite the industry's massive scale, there is a lack of research on fish welfare. Vivek introduces the Fish Welfare Initiative's new R&D division, which will focus on identifying welfare issues and working with farmers to implement welfare improvements, especially in lower-middle-income regions. This approach seeks to improve fish welfare through research and grassroots efforts.
Together, these presentations emphasize the need for species-specific research and targeted campaigns to improve fish welfare in India and Southeast Asia, focusing on both environmental and industry-wide impacts.
