'The Screwtape Letters was one of the first books I read after becoming a believer. I remember a horrible feeling as I was just a few pages in thinking "Am I supposed to be reading this"?? A few months later in a discipleship class the Pastor asked us if anyone had read Screwtape...I sheepishly put my hand up. What followed was a lively discussion w/the pastor encourging the others to get a copy.

For me, the best version of *The Screwtape Letters* was done by Focus on the Family Radio Theater, where characters were brought out and not just referred to. The book was a series of letters so it was , more or less, a running monologue. Having the back and forth between Screwtape and Wormwood (Andy Cerkis and Bertie Carvel) as well as the patient and his family and friends, in the dramatic audio version, helps us to 'see' the patient's world and what he's up against, when he's tempted.

He had an understanding of the power of the flesh and mankind's quickness to exchange ritual and genuflecting in place of true worship is brilliant. The apprentice being taught to make sure his person associates the presence of God with a statue or building, so that out of its presence he was 'free' to do his own thing. Truly brilliant.

@Totus Tuus A ritual by definition is a habit, done unthinkingly and by rote. True worship can not, by definition, be ritualistic. When said ritual is directed to an idol made by hands, and is that of a dead woman, now it's a cult.

@Totus Tuus Not for a minute did I reject bodily kneeling or lying prostrate before God or lifting hands in worship. I would be defying the very thing Lewis taught, that humans are bound by their flesh. I do take your point, though, not all people who go through rituals are mindless. Only God sees the heart of the people going through this ritual, only He can know if it's sincerity.

People in the Middle Ages believed in The spiritual. Reptiles of all sorts..dragons, snakes, gargoyles…etc depicts what Satan looks pretty good in the spiritual. Lewis was describing Satan in the flesh. As society turns away from the spiritual, they don’t see the spiritual anymore and the flesh fools them in nice cloths and nice talk.

This was interesting as I recently read his autobiography of how he became a Christian and failed to see where he did [ not saying he wasn't ]. The Screwtape letters imply a slow decent into destruction and conversely a slow ascent to heaven. Where Scripture shows we are born already fallen for we inherit Adams nature, and that we do not ascend slowly up to salvation as it is By Grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works least any man boast. Ephesians C2 VS 8-9. GOD BLESS ALL.

Did you know that every Christian is born again as scripture says yet the formula prayer that is trotted out does not make you Christian it may make you a cult member of the 'Born Again Club' but little else. There is a depth to Christianity that formula 'christians' never reach because their pride never allows them to not have all the answers and thus they sit on God's throne judging others as they have the 'truth'. If you did a tenth of what Lewis achieved for Christianity you would be a great man of God. Mere Christianity is one of the great apologetic books written about Christianity yet you have not read it. The type of Christianity you practice is in the comment I am replying to,.

My maternal grandmother gave me this book when I was 11, I've loved it ever since. I've incorporated it into a couple of writings too. In a college math class the teacher assigned us an essay that was to take the form of a letter (yes, an essay in a mathematics class) describing the 4 methods for solving a trigonometric equation. I copied the form of a Screwtape letter eg: "My Dear Wormwood, I note with great satisfaction that your client is taking a night school class in mathematics. This is good. Using it we can completely destroy his self esteem and drive him firmly into the care of Our Father Below....." Much later I put a reference to Wormwood into a play I wrote. At every performance I watched the audience to see who got it. Not many but it was quite satisfying nonetheless.

Thank you, my way ,as an individual, into C.S. Lewis books has been through documentaries and book reviews. It's a form of writing that I don't relate to and yet many of the quotes are. It's my feeling that at some point I will quit naturally pick up the book and see how all these wonderful quotes come together. I love my own religious beliefs and C.S Lewis quotes fit right in, I love that. It seems I'm not alone, it seems many other people may feel like that. Thank you again.

He was Lewis' close friend, yes... Tolkien, a staunch Roman Catholic, and fellow survivor of bloody WWI fighting, brought Lewis (an outspoken atheist at the time) during one long evening's dispute in Oxford via a sudden mind-blowing awakening into total powerful belief... Lewis was transformed into a devout Christianity for the rest of his life as a result of Tolkien. J R R Tolkien always said he would never have written Lord of the Rings or any of those books were it not for Lewis who hounded him to do so.

Yes! Tolkien was the one who caused C.S. Lewis to reconsider his atheist world view and become a Christian. They had an incredible friendship.

Agreed. Tolkien had a profound impact on Lewis coming to faith. However, it was G.K. Chesterton’s book ‘The Everlasting Man’ that intellectually convinced him. I find it brilliant how two Catholics played such an important role in leading Lewis to Christ.

Yep. Tolkein was Catholic. He said in a letter that during his first draft of The Lord of the Rings, any Christian themes were not deliberate, but that as he re-drafted they very much were deliberate! Fantastic! :)

Our, Israel's, Messiah, Immanual (Isaiah 7:14, 8:1-3) HaMaschiach (the "anointed" one) "knew" why He was "sent" to only His people, Israel, by our Father, the Lord God of creation and of His "chosen" Negro family Nation of Jacob to take our whipping for our disobedience, to redeem the family "back" to our Father who was extremely angry with the family and wanted to whip us to "death" except for our Messiah, Immanual Christ, who volunteered to take our whipping for us, His brethren because he loves us that much! And I believe that passage in Matthew where Christiansanity's Jesus asks our Father to remove this yoke from his neck, and questions our Father's faithfulness to him is just Christiansanity conjecture of the Satan to portray our Father God as a "bad" Father!! Father "Knows" Best!!
