I'm leaving this comment for other cat parents who might experience the same thing. I switched to wood pellets and soon after, I noticed that one of my cats wasn't eating as well as before. Within a few months, her eyes would run steady, she stopped eating almost completely and would vomit off and on. Of course, I brought her to the vet and we tried a few different medications to get her appetite back. I started wondering if it could be the switch to wood pellets? After all, her tearing and loss of appetite came about around the same time as the switch so I switched back to the old litter. Within a day or two, she was cleaning her plate, her eyes were no longer tearing constantly and no more vomitting. I hate that I can't use the wood pellets anymore because I got used to not having to clean as much (way less dust and tracking) and it smelled so much better but her health is much more important. So, if you switch to wood pellets in the litter box and soon after, your cat's appetite diminishes, it could be that they're allergic!! Cats don't like to eat what they can't smell and allergies can cause them to lose their sense of smell!!

I recommend try Purina Tidy Cats XL Breeze litter system. It is high sided, with a mat in the bottom to collect the urine, and the litter on top makes it very easy to clean their poops and leaves the cats paws dry and clean after doing their business. No dust whatsoever. A few of my cats and I am sensitive to the dust from the clay litter. We love this new XL Breeze litter system, I clean the poop when I see it, takes ten seconds to clean.

It's important not to use just any wood pellets, they should be kiln-dried and not treated with any phenols or other harmful additives. I use pine pellets from Tractor Supply and the Breeze washable/reusable ceramic pellets in the Purina Tidy Cats Breeze litter box system. I have both the small enclosed and large open Breeze litter boxes. Such a money saver and an easier process to clean. No tracking, minimal odor, and eco-friendly.

Be careful with a lot of these comments about switching back to toxic clay, and their health is normal in a day or two. If the pine contains phenols or abietic acids that would sicken your cat, it would take more than a day or two to recover. Not doubting this person's experience, but a lot of times, those "horror" stories are from litter companies that stand to lose millions if a viable alternative is found. ALWAYS check with your (feline only) vet AFTER an exam to see if this is a healthy alternative.

They won’t. It’s like coconut oil for facial moisturizer. It was originally for food and many people still use it for that so just because someone found another cool use, that doesn’t mean they’ll jack up the prices. This is still considered equine pine pellet bedding and that will always be its primary purpose in the eyes of the people who produce it so the price will stay the same. Now there ARE some pine pellets that are marketed specifically towards cat owners for litter purposes and those are over double the price. But it’s the exact same thing. They just know that there are some people out there who will buy it, so they go ahead and make it. One is called Feline Pine. Don’t waste your money. Just go to Tractor Supply.

After about a year, I just gave up on pine pellets. I was excited and hopeful at first to move away from clay. But. The chunky pellets are hard on sensitive cat feet. My cat won’t cover her poop, and it stinks to hi heaven. Whatever pine smell is there when litter is fresh doesn’t last, so that’s not a real benefit. Very high maintenance-I’m constantly scooping out the unconsolidated broken down pellets and taking out the very stinky cat litter trash. I definitely go through more litter with the pellets than I do traditional litter. It’s messier than clay litter. Yes, the cost and reduced environmental impacts are important benefits, but regrettably, the cons have won out. I’ve been back to traditional clay litter for about 2 weeks and I’m soooo relieved. Less smell, significantly less maintenance, and less mess. And my cat is clearly happier (even excited the first day)….and covering her poop, oh joy!

I feel the same about crystal, gummy, stinky mess - it was horrid. Dr Elsey's was my favorite litter for years and years until I discovered pellets. First I bought a small bag of Feline Pine to see if my cats would use it, they did. Next off to Tractor Supply for the horse stall pellets and I haven't looked back. They last so long and the cost is wonderful. The last time I went it was on sale so I got two forty pound bags for $10.00 (crowd roars here). This stuff is amazing of course if your cat isn't one to hide the solid waste (like mine) it can stink really quickly, but it makes me scoop quickly and no smell.

Just successfully switched 3 cats to the pine pellets over the duration of a few weeks. I have a very large cat and the arm and hammer sifter boxes are too small for him but do work for the pellets. I decided to make a double box out of a wide under the bed bin with handles built in . When doubled up they leave a gap for the sawdust to fall through. I did spend about an hour drilling holes into the top bin but cats are soo much happier now with the room to do their business. I still have two of the arm and hammers around for the other 2 cats that do get used. I much prefer this system . I hated scooping the clay , stinky litter. We just pick out the turds. And stir the pellets for a minute to get the sawdust to fall through . And empty the sawdust every couple of days.

I use the same litter sifting boxes. I empty the top tray (with used litter) into the second one that is the sifter, then lift the sifter tray and bottom trays up and shake which gets all the sawdust dumped into bottom tray. When I'm done shaking it, I empty the pellets back into the top pan and done. This might eliminate a step for you just a thought.

I've tried pine pellet litter with my cat the first day I got her and unfortunately, im just not a big fan of it anymore. No odor control whatsoever for the feces, but putting POUNDS of regular baking soda in there definitely helps.The main reason why I had to switch though was because it has a few sharp parts in it and my cat began avoiding the litterbox eventually because of it. Ended up switching to Okocat since she developed sensitive paws from it.

Update...it's been one week. Basic info: We have 4 cats and 5 boxes, (in various areas of the house) We bought one new box that allows the pine pellets to fall through a grate to a tray below once they're wet. So we now have one box with all pine pellets. The rest (4) is the conventional clumping style. First off, let me start off by saying that the new box is not only WAY easier to maintain, and it's unbelievably cleaner, no annoying grains of cat litter all over the floor. I tend to be barefoot often, I know having cats in the house and going barefoot is like dancing in a field of landmines, but I like to live on the wild side. The downside: It doesn't seem to be that all the cats have taken to using the new box, and we're afraid to change them all at once. At least one of the cats is using it, I just don't know who. I didn't want to change them all at once and come home to cat turds all over the house. And policing the bathroom habits of 4 cats is impossible with a full-time job and I have no interest in being the colonel of the cat urinal. So I guess my question at this point would be, how do we convert all of the boxes to the new style without creating issues for the cats? Thanks in advance! Love your channel! I subscribed!
@SvenandRobbie
@SvenandRobbie 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing! Pine will track! Just less, but I’m going to warn you it’s like stepping in legos if you accidentally step on one, which is rare for us. To be honest, I have only had to transition with Louise. With her I did the traditional way of transitioning. I just slowly added pine into her clay litter. With Sven, I just took a leap of faith. As soon as I saw him use the pine, I removed the clay box. If you saw my other litter testing videos, you will hear me say that all three of my cats would almost exclusively use what ever litter that is being test, whether is it crystal or tofu. It seems like they do prefer other litter more, but when I take away the other litter they go back to the pine without any issues. I would transition your cats slowly if you really do want to use pine and are scared they won’t use it. I recommend putting a single layer of pine on top of whatever litter you are using so they have to step on it and dig through it. Just a small layer though, enough to still slightly see some old litter. Hope this helps!

Be careful with Tofu. Soy is the number one ingredient that causes vomiting and digestive issues (meaning, they can't digest nutrients). I learned this with Fancy Feast dry food and couldn't figure out why my cat loved it so much yet I would always come home to vomit and "poop streaks" on the carpet (i.e., soft poop). I did a spreadsheet analysis with all of the ingredients of all the dry food I fed them (I'm a nerd) and found the outlier was soy. So, I did a little research and cats cannot digest soy. I know they poop in tofu litter, but they will ingest some by grooming.

Thanks for watching and your comment! I want to be honest so people get all the info they need. My biggest gripe with clay litter is the powdery film it leaves behind, especially the surroundings around the litter box. Plus Sven urinates right in the corner and the clump just sticks to the wall of the box and scraping it cause it to break up a little, which leads to tiny little pee ball crumbs and “stains”. I have tried corn too but Sven likes to eat it and I did not want to risk him getting sick if he eats too much of it.

I just bought pine pellets for my kitten. And he doesnt want to use it :/ Im also struggling with the smell of the pellets because the pine smell is so strong its almost suffocating. My litter box is in my room because my family wants it no where else. So im forced to bring in the smell. I know its better than clumping but if my kitten doesnt warm up to it. @samsmith6169

If you sift out the sawdust (what the pellets turn into when wet with pee), it's not necessary. Some folks don't sift out the sawdust often enough (some don't even scoop daily) and the puppy pads soak up the *excess* urine. If you put a handful of pellets (1/2 cup) in the bottom box, that soaks up extra pee so the pads aren't needed. Petsitters appreciate the pee pads cause it's quicker than washing out the box. Found that out the hard way when I came back from a long weekend away and the house stank of urine. She had scooped the turds, but that was it

Not eco friendly at all. Putting cat droppings into plumbing exposes the it and sewer to toxoplasmosis. Cat litter should never be flushed (even if it says it's safe) and cats shouldn't use the toilet. Use the garbage bag, or it's safe to compost used pine litter. It takes seconds to scoop the poop.

My cat also pees along the front and back sides. I’m currently using a clay based litter which is extremely dusty!! I absolutely HATE odour. His box is in our bedroom closet which I also hate! We used to have him on wood pellets until one day he decided he didn’t want to poop in there anymore. I would find his poop about 3-4 feet away from the box. He peed in the pellets with no issue. I tried a couple more times with the pellets but the same thing would happen. Now I’m thinking maybe we should use two boxes one with wood pellets and one with clay for the poop 😜. I’m so frustrated about this issue. We are going through a lot of litter lately. @samsmith6169
@samsmith6169 3 жыл бұрын
Pine Pellets are made from the waste product (sawdust) produced from lumber mills. The sawdust used to be burned, then when burning was banned, they would just send it to the landfills. Some places allowed burning but required expensive permits and equipment that reduces pollution from burning waste sawdust. It is much more profitable to make boards and plywood out of the trees. The pellets are a solution to the expense of dealing with all the sawdust produced from that sawdust.

I use the pine shavings also available at TS for animal bedding. Have for years. I just scoop the poops and change the entire box every 3-5 days as needed. Super cheap and smells nice too. Cons: the shavings do track so you have to keep up with sweeping. The shavings are compostable but if you can’t get rid of them within a week, the urine does start to smell. Urban composting, if you have it should wrk fine. I live in the country so I just dump the whole lot in the woods out back. $8 bag lasts 6-8 weeks. The shavings are already a by-product so no processing , except for bagging, goes into making the product. Super eco-friendly.

It's intended for use as STALL bedding! It is approximately 80% kiln-dried and allowed to further dry naturally, but please please read our Q&As regarding this because you will find that this is best used for it's intended purpose. dzaneena daze my advice is to put out the second new litter next to the old one. Skip out on cleaning the old one so. It’ll be a little gross but sooner they’ll stop wanting to use it. Another thing is to take a bit of old litter, maybe some poop and put it into the new to get their smell in there. Hope this helps!

Violetta Nikitina thanks! I’ve been setting the new litter with wood pellets next to the old litter with old litter clay and added some wood pellets into it. They’re rogues, all of them! But some of them are using the wood pellet litter now. Lol

I really appreciated this video. I want to use this system with my new kittens but thought for some reason that you had to sift the top by shaking it lol the pushing with the scoop is much easier. I will give it a try I hope they will use it and I won’t have a small issue

How are you feeling about the pine litter and system after using it for 7 weeks? Would love to know. And thanks for the video.

Hello! We have actually been using this pine litter system for over a year now. We just didn’t get around to making a video until we found the best way to remove the waste. I really like it the pine litter, but I won’t lie, there is dust when you shake up the entire litter box to sift the sawdust out. It isn’t a lot and is probably similar or less than those regular clay litter most people use. Before using this litter box system we use to scoop out the sawdust into a colander and sifted into a waste bucket. That was a lot of work and took a while. This litter box system is much better with the pine and we empty the bins underneath twice a week. We don’t smell the urine at all and when my mom visited she said she was surprised our house smelled so clean (see use to complain about the cat pee and poo smell when we used clay or crystals). Price is definitely a win too. We go through a 40lb bag in two months and we normally just buy around three bags a time since tractor supply co is a little far from us. Overall, we love this system and our boys took to it without any problems. Hope this helps and we would be happy to answer any other questions you may have! 🤗 P. S. When the pellets get scattered in the floor it really hurts to step on it. It’s like stepping on LEGO’s. 😖 but since the video we have moved the litter boxes into an enclosures and we no longer step on pellets!

I’ve been using pine pellets for my kitties as well. What I do is place two pieces of long wood along each the side of the bottom bin and place a training pad over it. That makes room for the saw dust to filter through when i swift. It takes a few days for the saw dust to fill up at the bottom and I scooped the saw dust into trash bin. I switch out the training pads every 1- 1.5 week.

Used this for years but it's a lot of work and you have to dump the entire thing every time. It smells horrible even with adding backing soda. I'm going to try tofu.

The directions on this litter box say to have the ""colander-ish" pan in the middle of the 3 pans. That seems like an extra step and also incorrect. I see you have that pan(colander-ish) on the top of the 3 too. Definitely makes more sense to me!

I currently use pine pellets and love most of the benefits, but when my cat poops it does not his the smell AT ALL. It stinks up the whole apartment in under a minute :/ any one have tips? I would hate to go back to yucky clay litter but my cats poop smells so pungent!

i think the clay litter absorbs and dries the poop much faster. plus since the particles are small, very little air can move from the poop to the surrounding air whereas pellets have many more air gaps to let the smell travel through

We put baking soda our litter box enclosure. We find that helps a bit.

Ya that crystal stuff smells so bad, but I’ve been using the cheap clay stuff and as far as smell goes it’s awesome! But I definitely want to try this stuff out as well.

I’m not a big fan on the artificial perfume smell that comes with clay. It’s like when someone drops a dooozy and tries to cover it with air freshener and it smells like poop flowers 🤣😂 idk which is worse poop only or poop and fake flowers mixed
