PVC pipe has the same wall thickness regardless of diameter of the PVC pipe itself (which explains why as the diameter of the pipe increased its rating in PSI decreases) This being said if you can get away with a smaller diameter pvc pipe for this build and thicker lexan you can increase the strength of the enclosure. I would recommend PVC glue on PVC pipe. Using a pipe wrench on the screw cap will help ensure an airtight seal. Also a desiccant inside will help with with humidity and fogging.

I'd bet if you were even more careful, using actual PVC primer and sealant, and using thicker Lexan (plexiglass) for the window, you could, in theory, get deeper shots! You could always test this with the paper towels and something to hold it away from your body as you dive deeper. Silicone aquarium caulk may be better for holding the window in place. That is, if you're willing to spend a little more than the suggested $60, but not much more. Great build, I'm going to build one myself!!!

Since this is another rig build (which I personally find to be some of my favorites) I figured now would be a good time to request this. Although, it's a fairly small piece of equipment, follow focuses are ridiculously expensive, could you make us a cheap and easy follow focus build?
@luke81214 жыл бұрын
Why wouldnt you use PVC glue when connecting PVC parts? Also Gasket sealant would be my choice for rubber seal (Gasket) as opposed to Hot glue. Seems like just a couple tweeks and the Integrity of this could be greatly increased. Also the constant opening/closing of the setup to access controls of camera seems not optimal.

I have been making under water housings for still and video cameras for almost 30 years using the exact same design, only diference is that for the threading on the cap I found that a thin layer of Ace Plumbing grease works perfectly, I have taken them as deep as 80 feet and it handled the pressure great,,, Nice video vin

@comedyguy09 Out of the 19 builds we're done, I only count the slider, a fig rig, this underwater camera rig. That's 3 out of 19 that are camera related. So far, I'd say we definitely do more props/visuals.

Thanks for a great episode. I really enjoyed this one. I'm one of those people that enjoy rigs a lot, and I enjoy seeing the way other people make them. Contrary to the haters I'll say that you do a very fine blend of rigs and props. Your design is interesting, and the cylinder gives added strength. Total thumbs up, and I can't wait for more! @Tomtheshort Yeah, I guess it would be possible to put in the LED Dot Matrix display with effects on a modified motorcycle helmet, but it would still be a bit of work. I also just can't see the use for it in movies (without infringing on Daft Punk's trademark). Guy Manuel de Homem Christo's helmet would be easier to make with some foam and a motorcycle helmet.

Given the cost of a housing I'd rather just spend the $120 to buy a pressure rated housing. D: However, this would be a great rig to have if you're filming in a heavily raining or environmentally unstable climate that could cause damage to your camera.
@KayeProd14 жыл бұрын
Could you make an underwater rig for cameras like DSLR´s? I mean one that isn´t so narrow and more suitable for cameras with an long lens forwards and wide body like the DSLR´s. I know this is low budget proyects but a lot of poeple use DSLR´s to film now a days.

I wasn't expecting the Level 10 build episode to be like this. Not that it's a bad thing of course. Maybe you can make an underwater suit for Puppet Zack. That way he won't bitch about how he's made of felt and that emerging him underwater would probably turn him into a sponge and probably kill him.......again. He'll probably be a lot more grateful for the underwater camera rig too. Oh wait. He needs an actual camera....um....make him one?

@tobybirch00714 жыл бұрын
I built something like this, but did it differently. I did the window very similarly, but on the end that you put the camera in, I just used a big rubber cap from lowes. It fit on very tightly, and it didn't leak a drop. I used the toilet paper test too. The velcro idea is great though.

Me and my dad built one of these a few years ago. I wouldn't trust hot glue to hold this together. I cant remember the name but use the purple primer and blue glue that are made for pvc pipe. its a lot stronger and you dont have to wait more than 5 min for it to dry

I really liked the episode and have been wondering about underwater rigs for a while although I use a dslr camera for my films (Canon T2i to be exact) and I doubt that it would fit in there. Do you think that you could do a revisit to this exact aim it more towards dslr cameras and maybe show a way you could focus (which would be kinda hard i guess...) maybe a level 11 build could be in our future?

Great video! I just went and spent 50Cent, I mean 50 cents on a fish tank from a thrift store. I put the tank in shallow water, then put my camera in the tank. That way I was able to see what I was shooting and operate the controls. Try it!
@ngheartsu3413 жыл бұрын
@SponchyPonch The quality of the "waterproof-ness" And how important it is to be as careful as possible so that it actually IS waterproof is what makes it a level 10 build. Like Zack said in the begininng, It's really important that you spend your time on this and seal it right or otherwise you're better off just throwing you camera into water and expecting it to work!
@Elmerstudd00714 жыл бұрын
@Mrminimaxx3 thats pretty easy, get a black jumpsuit or just a bunch of black clothing, and glue a bunch of glow strips to it. Kinda like the glow necklaces and bracelets you see. For added effect, you could put a few spare plastic bits on ther to make it look more mechanical.

This rig can be done for dslrs, but instead of Velcro, use a mounting screw, and just make the whole thing bigger. Remember to support your lenses.

if you are still uneasy you could wrap your camera in towels and if their is a leek the towels will soak it up and make sure to check at least every second shot just to make sure. just some procautions because breaking your camera sucks.
