In Afghanistan, people are going to desperate lengths to survive the second winter since the Taliban took control, including selling their daughters.
The UN has said a humanitarian "catastrophe" is now unfolding in the country.
When the Taliban took over in August 2021, foreign funds flowing into Afghanistan were frozen, triggering an economic collapse.
Now, families are taking desperate measures to survive, including selling organs and sedating their hungry children.

Just FYI, Afghan parents were doing this regularly in 2010-2013, while I was there. This was when Western economic aid was pouring in by the hundreds of billions and the economy was good. All the kids sold were always girls. When my wife and i had trouble conceiving our first child in 2015, an acquaintance offered to connect me with hospital administrators in Kabul, who worked regularly with parents to sell their babies. We could have bought a little girl for 200 USD... We were repelled by this and did not take up this offer. But this practice of Afghan patents selling kids is not only a "when-times-are-tough" thing. It's part of their culture and society, even when times are good...

hundreds of billions my foot. only 3% of total aid went to the afghans and 60% of rebuilding jobs went to western contractors (source: brown university). the 97% went to hunting down taliban and others in the 'war on terror', only to land back under the taliban in days. afghanistan was a colony under 19 years of plunder. nobody bothered to develop the place, the urban rate went up only 3% from 20% for almost 2 decades. they were broke to begin with and people were already leaving in the millions annually under american rule. these are all statistics all of you can verify on your own time. also ashraf ghani .... the us-backed president who tucked tail with millions in choppers .... was a naturalised american citizen. everybody read the western koolaid and thinking these people are irrational. they are not. every human take the same desperate measures in desperate times.

In developed countries, children are a cost, because they are a money whole for the first 18 to 25 years of their life, for the parent - and they start producing in the parent's later years of life. But in those sorts of 3rd world countries, children are sent to work from an early age, rather than to school. You can also sell the daughters into marriage. So there is a financial benefit to having many children, as together they create a more substantial income source. Sure, with so many mouths to feed, even if all work and produce, it won't be enough to eat stake, but at least you will have porridge every night, and you will not starve. And if you make enough, you may even have enough to send one child to school, the most promising son, and if he makes something of his life, he may take care of the family in your later years. This is how the Westerners lived too, until a century ago.

I strongly believe that the Talibans fought for over 20 years for Afganistan to be free. They kicked out both the Russians and the Western forces. Now they got their country back, their borders back, whatever. The Talibans are accountable for the situation, so don't waste any more time with Afganistan. No aid of any kind, as it is a waste of time, effort and especially money, as it will reinforce the Talibans' position. The stories are for the rich "stupid" Western countries that happen to be also very sensitive about children. Maybe the Afgans will get some charity from "stupid" Western rich countries. That might be a reason why they left the reporters to get out alive.

This sort of situation is actually strengthening the Talibans. Islamic Fundamentalists work on the same basis as any other gang, cartel, or mafia organization. As long as there is poverty, and there are no opportunities for those people, and the only way to survive and have a meager salary is to join a terrorist organization like the Taliban, then they will keep existing and become stronger. That's why America failed to destroy. High unemployment rates and abject poverty, created a massive poll of people from which the Taliban could recruit, and no matter how many of them were killed by the US, they managed to rebuild their forces. America fucked up badly. It managed to leave Afghanistan in an even worse shape than it found it in. Is going to become an even worse hotspot of terrorism and fundamentalism, and is going to bite all of us very bad by the ass in the coming years.
