They knew that his action to abandon the state positions in such a manner would cause an immediate disintegration of the army and state...and it did. Massoud was forced to pick up the pieces and save as much of both the army and state as possible, whilst fighting back the prearranged Najibist-Hekmatyar alliance which sought to give power in Kabul to Hekmatyar. This eas known at the time, footage even exists of the infiltration, subsequent documentation had emerged, and finally even Hekmatyar himself has admitted to the secret talks between Najib and him in various places right upto treason of Najib. The PDPA army units and equipment that got looted and destroyed were those that were located in the South and East. Northern and Western units remained intact. The tanks of Gardez were blown up to order Najibists and Hekmatyar gang for scrap metal dealers of Pakistan. In reality the thieves and traitors are the ones that constantly slander Massoud. The Afshar incident was Nsjibi Khalqi Hekmatyar Ali Mazari Iranian Pakistani and Saudi conspiracy to create Sunni Shia division and hatred between Tajik and Qizilbash whilst punishing Shia Qizilbash for being historically loyal to Sunni leadership. From this incident libelous claims are made Massoud by Massoud haters and Hazara nationalists seeking to create false Karbalah from it, whilst cynically being the main cause of the battle there.
