A little girl walked up to an Old British Veteran, who had served from Dunkirk, 1940 to Holland, 1945, she asked him if he had to fight in the war again, would he do it? The Old Veteran smiled and replied in a gentle voice; “For you? Always.” You can’t make this stuff up, we truly were blessed to have such beautiful souls guide our world through such dark and uncertain times.

(Vocal) And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; _We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;_ _Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;_ And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, _And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace._

The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To my Church have you been true?" The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep... Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills just got too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here. They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand." There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgement of his God. This is a British patriotic song. Lyrics to the parts that were sung: And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace. The "country" refers to Heaven, the "King" refers to God. This song fits perfectly. As the soldiers fighting in the war died, they went the Heaven, hence the part about "soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase". Beautiful song.

Once more into the fields, once more do we find ourselves fighting for our right to exist as a nation. Men in France have gone before us and none have come home the same way they left, and the lucky ones faded in the battlefield. Let the message beat into your hearts as I say, "They come in the skies, they come for our home, and they come for the beloved crown. Defend the homeland, please." Defend the land we must, and we shall. _"In the streets and in the pubs, drunk off their minds, they would mock each other until they were blue in the face. But on the field of battle they were brothers in arms. Sons of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland resting in the mud as heroes"_ No one famous said this, it was the words of an unsung hero who you've never heard of. He was no one significant, he was just another man. Another lad who saw the glimmer and glory in fighting for his nation. I found the writing fading on an old crumbling tombstone in a graveyard in a rural England village while exploring the countryside. The simple yet poetic words of a heroic man from the heart of England. Rest in peace Will J. Owensmith (the name of the soldier on the tombstone). 1923 - 1944.

I realised that this piece brings tears to my eyes not only because I am so proud of my country Britain and the sacrifices of our glorious dead, but also because it almost a melancholic and longing nod to a past where Britons had a right to feel proud, patriotic and emotional without fear of condemnation in this modern and judgemental time. Back when the Union Jack wasn't "a far-right symbol". Back when there was a real sense of what you were defending and fighting for, as you sat there in the trench. Respect to them all. When I hear this song, I imagine my medic on the UK side, after a battle, sitting in a heap of used bandages with other used items strewn about the floor, and just humming this song sort of like a half dead zombie. Yeah it sounds cringy but if you put yourself in those shoes, you feel like you’re there, and it’s really eye opening to know that that’s how a lot of medical personal had to have felt after fighting for a person’s life.
