@@yavuzkestane9952 It's hard to believe, but in 1996 he'd been playing a round of golf in my hometown in Scotland with Michael Douglas. I walked into a local fast food place (we call it a chippy or a kebab House here) and there he was ordering pizza for himself and MD! It was a brief chat but he was very polite and happy to sign an autograph, which I still have, plus a newspaper clipping from the local newspaper who interviewed me about his visit.

I saw this film at cinema as a very young man in the 70's, it gripped me in a way I couldn't quite fathom at the time, as I got older I went back to the film time and time again I understood more what I felt the first time I saw it, now as a 53 year old stuck in hospital for months it makes more sense than ever to me, OFOTCN is a lot more than a film, it is life.

'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' is probably my favorite movie. It's not a movie about people. It's a parable for culture. R.P. McMurphy is a timeless character, as are many of the supporting characters in both the book and on screen.

It's about conformity and nonconformity. Jack is the alpha male in a herd of conformists. It looks like a movie about breaking out of the system, but actually it shows that it's enough if outstanding characters like Jack are trying to break out of the system. So all the rest can quietly adore him for doing so and stay put.

With younger/middle aged actors, the ones that seem to have the most promise are JOAQUIN PHOENIX, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jim Carrey, Denzel Washington, Jaime Foxx, Hugh Grant, Will Poulter, Keanu Reeves, Matt Damon, Jason Statham, CILLIAN MURPHY, MADS MIKKELSEN, David Tennant, Jack Black, Henry Cavill, Daniel Radcliffe, Woody Harrelson, Jeremy Renner (he can make a comeback), Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch, Johnny Depp, Crispin Glover, Cam Gigandet, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Gosling, Jude Law, Ewan McGregor, well, you get the idea. At least with the dudes. Cillian Murphy is just BEYOND AMAZING, btw, and Joaquin Phoenix is a DEEP, DEEP guy…. Mads Mikkelsen is gonna be one of the greats, if he isn’t already. Jack Nicholson is THE greatest actor to exist in my lifetime...and brother that's 61 years! It isn't just his acting but his true character that is one of a kind, that face, his voice and his humor. He's not exactly a good-looking man yet he exudes a masculinity that is undeniable. The women literally adore him...go figure. He's humble amidst the fact he is Legendary. He loves his children, has an incredible heart and eye for true art and it's said his one true love was Anjelica Houston. She too was not a beautiful woman per se yet she had cajones! She was one tough lady and she put ole' Jackie under her thumb and kept him there! Definitely a Bogie and McCall love affair! They are classics and sadly there will never be another generation like them again...God bless you Jackie my man you are one of a kind...always and forever!

Geez. I would've listened regardless of his time running over. I'd take a whole show of Jack. There's a movie in just the coming together of the picture. Jack is still feeling the moments when the characters were coming together. He can't keep from smiling. Such young actors at the time that were working there craft. I think I'll see it now.

For all his shenanigans off set and his rep for being a wild man, I’ve ever once read or heard of any story where Jack was anything less than a complete professional and generous with everyone around him. He brings ideas but doesn’t force them on people, he goes with the flow of the set. He never steps on anyone else’s moment. He is an actor you trust. See a film of his and you and you trust that you are in good hands. Yeah, there may be bad films here and there, but he is never less than mesmerizing in any role.

Ken Kesy after leaving college was asked by a friend to take his place on a medical trial, he agreed, but of course the medical trial was just a front to aid recruitment, it was actually a CIA black op to investigate the effects of LSD on people, scary shit.

An actor needs material. The main reason this movie is so amazing is that Ken Kesey wrote one of the best novels in history. If you dig the movie I strongly suggest reading the novel. A lot of it is told from the point of view of The Chief. It is well known that Kesey used a lot of psychedelics. I have read that he specifically used some type of psychedelic ( maybe mescaline?) while writing the parts from The Chief's point of view to give to the reader a more deeply expressive experience of his style of thinking, and the haze of the meds, and the basis of The Chief's values of Life. While in the "hospital" The Chief was being given large amounts of psycho-active drugs daily. He might have had some ceremonial use of psychedelics before his time in the "hospital" also. This is an "iceberg" type of story. You only visually see about 10% of the story. The other 90% is hidden from view under the water-line, but still has an impact on your sub-conscious.

Good observations. To me, it's all about masculinity. The patients have all been emasculated by their mothers, the system, whatever. The Big Nurse continues to do the same, not realizing she is doing it...she's one of those people who thinks her "professionalism" is real, and that it gives her the power to heal.....but Mc Murphy is very comfortable with his masculinity, and is a natural leader of men....all the guys love his camaraderie. McMurphy dies in the end, but because of his courage, the Chief is set free, and discovers his own masculinity....running off into the woods in the end.....so powerfully and such a healing film....

Having been put in one of those places at age 15 in 1971 for drug abuse where I spent 3 years, I could have showed him how to escape. I was quite good at it. His escape in the movie was the tree-to-the-wall "hiding in plain sight" version which works if the security is relaxed and you get lucky. Bolting out the only unlocked door in the place across the grounds in the dead of winter and over the 12 foot ivy wall before they know what the fuck is going on is good too, unless you're 15 and the police pick up the chase after you're out. In that case you better have an apartment in town lined up to hide until the heat dies down and you can head down to the train station, or, the Greyhound > Woodshole, Mass > Nantucket Island.

That would have been fantastic being there. One thing I have noticed, after reading the book "Hollywood Hellraisers" and reading/seeing interviews from Jack - he has such an unmitigated adoration for the craft of filmmaking. Just listening to him reminisce about Louise Fletcher, Milos, even the young woman who had the bit part of the girl on the boat - he just loves actors and acting and making whatever film he's in better.

This film had such a profound impact on one of my best friends and I at the time. We both still can't say enough good things about it. A lot of peeps on here mention the book which is also quite a good read. Found it similar in a way to American Psycho (also a good film). In Cuckoo's Nest Kesey writes through the eyes of the Indian character who hasn't had the most stellar education and so it takes a little while to get in to it I found. In American Psycho Ellis' protagonist goes off into very long rants about Whitney Houston, Huey Lewis et al. This also in a similar kind of way took a bit of getting to grips with. Both good books though and a joy to be able to compare them with the films.

There will never be another Jack Nicholson. One of the most interesting people on the planet. Kind and dangerous at the same time. You always get Jack. The only movie where he didn't play himself was 'About Schmidt' 2002. It was an interesting movie, but I had to wait most of the movie until "Jack" came out in the bathroom scene. That was worth the wait.
