He's not exactly a good-looking man yet he exudes a masculinity that is undeniable. The women literally adore him...go figure. He's humble amidst the fact he is Legendary. He loves his children, has an incredible heart and eye for true art and it's said his one true love was Anjelica Houston. She too was not a beautiful woman per se yet she had cajones! She was one tough lady and she put ole' Jackie under her thumb and kept him there! Definitely a Bogie and McCall love affair! This film had such a profound impact on one of my best friends and I at the time. We both still can't say enough good things about it. A lot of peeps on here mention the book which is also quite a good read. Found it similar in a way to American Psycho (also a good film). In Cuckoo's Nest Kesey writes through the eyes of the Indian character who hasn't had the most stellar education and so it takes a little while to get in to it I found. In American Psycho Ellis' protagonist goes off into very long rants about Whitney Houston, Huey Lewis et al. This also in a similar kind of way took a bit of getting to grips with. Both good books though and a joy to be able to compare them with the films.

An actor needs material. The main reason this movie is so amazing is that Ken Kesey wrote one of the best novels in history. If you dig the movie I strongly suggest reading the novel. A lot of it is told from the point of view of The Chief. It is well known that Kesey used a lot of psychedelics. I have read that he specifically used some type of psychedelic ( maybe mescaline?) while writing the parts from The Chief's point of view to give to the reader a more deeply expressive experience of his style of thinking, and the haze of the meds, and the basis of The Chief's values of Life. While in the "hospital" The Chief was being given large amounts of psycho-active drugs daily. He might have had some ceremonial use of psychedelics before his time in the "hospital" also. This is an "iceberg" type of story. You only visually see about 10% of the story. The other 90% is hidden from view under the water-line, but still has an impact on your sub-conscious.
@joemarshall42265 жыл бұрын
Good observations. To me, it's all about masculinity. The patients have all been emasculated by their mothers, the system, whatever. The Big Nurse continues to do the same, not realizing she is doing it...she's one of those people who thinks her "professionalism" is real, and that it gives her the power to heal.....but Mc Murphy is very comfortable with his masculinity, and is a natural leader of men....all the guys love his camaraderie. McMurphy dies in the end, but because of his courage, the Chief is set free, and discovers his own masculinity....running off into the woods in the end.....so powerfully and such a healing film....

You don't get to hear Jack speak as Jack very often, so this is pretty cool. He seems kind of nervous here, which is kind of funny because he always plays badass characters with no fear.

Thank you for posting! This has got to be the longest clip, of Raw Nicholson honesty, I have ever seen! He takes a bit to ‘get there’, doing this speech mainly, extemporaneously, so it’s nearly unscripted, it’s like jazz, early be-bop. You’re prepared, due to your training, yet you learn on the fly, when you go with the flow. For further insight, compare Jack’s delivery of this speech to any role he has played, as well as any early interview he gave. Clearly, all of those roles were scripted, yet those early interviews appear so, as well. Thanks again!

Jack Nicholson is probably the best actor since Spencer Tracy and that is pretty good. Hats off to Mr. Nicholson & Mr. Tracy, the best in American acting.

it's pretty obvious jack is one the best actors who ever came around. What's even more staggering is he's pretty old here, and it's 2023, and he's still around.

Did Jack retire? I heard we was having trouble remembering lines these days. He is going to be so missed when he's gone man.

His memory is probably fine,he's just old and wants to rest after like 50 years of work. Shoutouts to him for pretty much ending his career like this and not becoming a "comedy" movie buffon like De Niro.

Jack gave us his best years. He's wise to not foolishly attempt to stay in the limelight long after the party is over. So many have made this mistake. We will always have his movies.

My high school english teacher told the class that he was going to try out as an extra for this film. They didn't use extras though. Whenever I drive by the State Hospital I think of this movie. Sort of cool having it filmed here in Salem, Oregon.

Met Jack while he was filming Witches if Eastwick. My husband and I were taking a car ride down the coast and saw all the huge trucks pulled into a parking lot, so we pulled over. And there he was with his ponytail and lime green pants, he had just come off the beach from playing football with the guys. Asked for his autograph and he was most gracious in signing a pamphlet of antique shops in the area, as was only piece of paper I could muster up. He said, is this the best thing you have for an autograph, I managed to eke out, sorry it is.

One line I remember from the book, during the basketball game (Martini is the Danny DeVito character): "...and Martini kept passing the ball to people only he could see."

Ken Kesy after leaving college was asked by a friend to take his place on a medical trial, he agreed, but of course the medical trial was just a front to aid recruitment, it was actually a CIA black op to investigate the effects of LSD on people, scary shit.

Having been put in one of those places at age 15 in 1971 for drug abuse where I spent 3 years, I could have showed him how to escape. I was quite good at it. His escape in the movie was the tree-to-the-wall "hiding in plain sight" version which works if the security is relaxed and you get lucky. Bolting out the only unlocked door in the place across the grounds in the dead of winter and over the 12 foot ivy wall before they know what the fuck is going on is good too, unless you're 15 and the police pick up the chase after you're out. In that case you better have an apartment in town lined up to hide until the heat dies down and you can head down to the train station, or, the Greyhound > Woodshole, Mass > Nantucket Island.
