Work for Eufónio Solo and Symphonic Band, dedicated to the euphonist Nuno Arraiano, commissioned on the occasion of the concert commemorating the day of the City of Batalha and the anniversary of the Battle of Aljubarrota, on August 14, 1385.
“Santo Condestável” (The Saint) is a narrative of the life of São Nuno de Santa Maria, that begins with a moment of prayer by the protagonist, marked by gratitude and prayers in search of protection and courage for battle. The moment is interrupted by warlike sounds of alert, chaos and danger that transport the listener to battle, where Nun'Álvares Pereira, through his emblematic military leadership, manages to maneuver the military personnel in an astute and experienced way, leading the troops to victory.
After the glory, the tragic death of D. Leonor, his wife in 1388, is described by a funeral march characterized by the suffering experienced by D. Nuno. After a small introspective “Candenza” by the Constable who, motivated by his very strong relationship with God, is impelled to follow the ecclesiastical life.
The work ends with the spiritual ascension and symbolic edification of the human testimony of justice and fraternity. D. Nuno was canonized by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in 2009 with the name “São Nuno de Santa Maria”.
