It was our first day fishing in Alaska at Steamboat Bay Fishing Club. Our guide Josh Hoogerhyde pulled up to the first spot of the day and we dumped our two Old Town kayaks into the water. He tossed me a bag of salmon skull caps and I hooked them up on to my heaviest rig... a Daiwa Saltiga 50 on the same Adrenaline Custom rod I landed both marlin with. What a deadly setup! Some guests have nicknamed it Excalibur...
After fishing for only a short time, I felt a huge bite... and right away I knew it was the one I was hoping for!
This fish ended up being 67 inches long which translates to 156 pounds! This is by far the biggest fish I have pulled into my kayak and what a cool feeling that is!
When you intend to release a fish like this it is incredibly important that you handle it with caution. We are always sure that if we are to grab the gill plate of a big fish...that we have a secure hold on the toughest part of it and ensure we DO NOT touch the actual gills or serious harm can be done to the fish. A net is usually recommended if possible but depending on the situation this method can give the handler more control over the fish and puts less stress on it than say a mouth gaff or boca grip. We only had the fish out of the water for about a minute and released it to fight another day! Maybe a future guest will catch her when she's 50 pounds bigger!

Dragging kayak on a boat, having support from a boat just in case something goes wrong, is not catching from a kayak.

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. kzbin.infoUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

Hey Adam, I’m getting ready to be in Valdez for a month for work. Is there any place close to shore I could get some fish? I’ve got a solid kayak that I’ve caught halibut off before. Just curious if Valdez I could peddle out and get on something worth eating. Thanks in advance man

Awesome fish and video Adam! How was that fight relative to a big cubera?
@AdamFisk
@AdamFisk 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Scott! The fight probably lasted about the same amount of time as a cubera. Maybe a little bit longer but it is less stressful as these don’t really have caves or anything to break you off on. It definitely took longer to put it in the kayak though haha!

Glad you like it! At some points when I knew I was going to be getting somewhat wet and cold I wore my NRS dry suit. Other times when it was a bit warmer I had my red mustang survival jacket which doubles as a life jacket. Also some Columbia pants, I would have rather had some pants that were a bit more waterproof though lol

Can’t see halibut on a fish finder, they don’t have a air bladder. That’s why you can release them in 300 ft of water in the Cook Inlet and they swim right back to bottom.
@AdamFisk
@AdamFisk 2 жыл бұрын
Fish actually don’t need to have an air bladder to see them on a fish finder. You can even see jellyfish and mark a thermocline with them. It’s certainly nice to not have to use a descending device for them though!
