The mark by Leo Barry where you said "That was it for the win huh?"was indeed. That mark let Leo Barry's team, the Sydney Swans win their first Premiership (Super Bowl equivalent) in 72 years. It was the last action of the game and the margin was 4 points. If his opponent had marked the ball they would have been lining up to kick the winning goal. He literally saved the game and broke the longest premiership drought by any team in the competition.

A Mark is when a ball is caught after a kick over a certain distance. Don’t need to jump off another person. This video was those extra special beauties, haha.

"mark" just means a catch that has travelled (off the foot) in the air over 15m without being touched. These are just the 'speckies' (slang driving from "spectacular mark"). Season begins tomorrow. Go the Dees! EDIT: When you talk about people leaving in body bags, Brown (the guy who took hat crazy mark) just used to play like that - no regard for his own safety....

You'd be amazed how few injuries there are in marking contests. Don't get me wrong, getting kneed in the back of the head doesn't tickle, but it's rare to see a player unable to continue the game. And you're so right about how tough they are. It's such a physically demanding game that rarely stops, and when it's your time to go, you go. Flat out. That's why the preseason is so long - 3 to 4 months, depending on years played. It takes that long to get your body primed for the 6 month grind. Love your work. Keep it up champ!

A mark can be defensive as well as offensive. It is simply a contest to gain possession.
@adamparker976510 ай бұрын
The thing is that the player watches the ball and then jumps for it . They dont see if the player in front of them is a team mate or not. Its actually pretty rare for the person getting jumped on to get injured , but it is humiliating . If the player holds the mark for a second it can be knocked out as they hit the ground and its still payed as a mark , not an incomplete catch like NFL. Its one of the truly unique aspects of the game and we would never change it.

The mark is the iconic aspect of Aussie rules. Glad you enjoyed it. I think you got the hang of it, but essentially, a mark is paid if the ball is kicked (by a team mate or opponent) at least 15 m and caught on the full without being touched on the way. We do refer to "intercept marks" when the mark is taken against the opposition to turn over the ball. Yes, you can climb over a team mate as well an opponent to take a mark. The key to judging whether a mark has been taken is whether the ball has been controlled. There is no minimum time that the ball has to be held and it is ok if it jars out of your hands when you hit the ground (unlike cricket), as long as you have controlled it. Most marks in a game are simple grabs from uncontested passes from team mates and players often "play on" (keep the ball moving, rather than going back behind the spot where the mark was taken), unless they are within goal scoring distance. However, there are plenty of contested marks in a game and you may be lucky enough to see one or two "speckies" (spectacular marks) somewhat like (though not necessarily as outstanding) as the ones shown in the video. If the player elects to stop and take their time to kick after a mark, an opponent is allowed to stand on the spot where the mark was taken and the player who marked the ball goes back behind the "mark" to take their kick. In general play, they have 15 seconds and when in goal scoring range they have 30 seconds before the umpire calls "play on" and the opponent can run at the kicker. The one where the commentator yells "Leo Barry, you star!" was a famous mark not so much for the actual quality of the mark (which was a decent pack mark but not spectacular per se) but the importance of it. The Sydney Swans (previously known as the South Melbourne Swans) had been cellar dwellers at the bottom of the VFL (Victorian Football League - the precursor to the AFL)/AFL ladder (table) for decades, having last won a Grand Final (like the Super Bowl) in 1923. The mark occurred in the dying seconds of the 2005 Grand Final. Sydney was up by 4 points and a West Coast mark could have resulted in a match winning goal. Leo Barry, of Sydney, took the match saving mark, breaking the longest Premiership drought in VFL/AFL history.

one of the important things that the highlights don't show and is hardly ever explained is that if you get up into an oppositions back or on their shoulders and don't control the mark then high chance of a free kick to the opposition. so these guys have to commit everything to the ball and cant just hit the player
@jsegal83852 ай бұрын
One thing I will never understand is how people go crazy for the spectacular plays, the brutal hits and the running kicks but never seem to acknowledge the players who can and have won games off their own boot. Gary Ablett Snr for example. One who is never really featured is Tony Lockett. He holds the AFL goal kicking record of 1360 goals. Despite missing 23 games from suspension and more from injury. 6'3'' 247 pounds. He had a reputation as someone you did not fuck with and it was earned yet he won a Brownlow medal (think MVP) which is awarded to the Fairest and best player (with the emphasis on fairest), Coleman Medal, Bob Skilton medal and the awards go on. They put two people on him and he beat them both. He kicked 15 goals in a game. He won games by himself. Look him up on wikipedia and check the few you tube clips of him in action

We call marks that the player jumps up on another player a "Specky". Any person can mark the ball from a kick from any player of both teams. The minimum distance for a mark is 15 metres (16 yards or 49 feet).
@NoName-ds5uq10 ай бұрын
I haven’t finished watching this video yet,, but I’ll add a few pointers. I does not matter who kicks the ball, if you catch it on the full off the boot it is a mark. And you can take a speckie over anyone on the ground, whether they’re your opponent or teammate. A “speckie” is a spectacular mark like you’re showing here. It “technically” violates some rules like, ”push in the back” and “high contact”, but it is protected under the the rules because it is such a unique part of our game! We love a great speckie and if it was ever to go away I think the AFL would lose a lot of fans! Edited: now I’ve watched the whole thing, I can’t believe Andrew Walker(“Skywalker”, with his bandaged head in 2011) and Alex Jesaulenko(the great call, “JESAULENKO!” in the 1970 Grand Final between Carlton and Collingwood in front of over 121,000 people!”) were not included here! Not that I’m a one-eyed Carlton supporter at all…

A Mark is a catch of the ball, from a kick that has travelled more then 15m, you can mark the ball no matter which team kicked it. What is shown here are the “speccy’s” which is a shorter term for spectacular mark. A speccy is when you use another player to assist you in marking, it can be either team. The speccy is counted as a mark of your trying to get the ball, you can do what you want to get the ball, but if you do it to early, a “unrealistic attempt” free gets paid against you and the opposition gets a free kick. If you just pretend to mark and are actually trying to hurt the other team player, then a “going the man” free is paid against. If you try to stop the mark and hit their hands away, then it’s called striking the arms. In all cases when the ball is flying in a markable state, every player must attempt to get the ball without blocking or stopping others from marking, the only thing legal to touch, is the ball. So it’s very fair, and with players hunting the ball and not the players, it makes it as safe as could be.
@ianscott42410 ай бұрын
A mark is simply the act of catching a kick on the full that has travelled more than 15m without being touched by another player. A mark is completed once the umpire deems the player has control over the ball and is still considered a mark if the ball comes loose from an opposition player or the player hitting the ground, provided the player had control over the ball before the ball was knocked out.
@mikeythehat669310 ай бұрын
A "Mark" is just any catch. Provided the ball has been kicked and travelled 15 metres through the air without being touched by any other player. So, it CAN be an interception, but more often it is a pass. Players will try to prevent their opposition from catching the ball or they will try to touch it off the boot in order to prevent a Mark because any Mark will provide a Free kick. ( it is the option of any Marking player to take a free kick or to play on). The Umpire determines whether or not the ball has been "Marked", the determination is to whether the ball has been "controlled to the ground". That "controlled to the ground" part is really important because it means that the ball can "pop out" after the player hits the ground and the Mark (and the resulting free kick) will still be paid. It's not the same as in the NFL with regards to "completion".

Once the ball has been kicked anyone can mark. It's pretty much see ball, get ball. If you catch the ball in the air, stop and control it in flight then it's a mark, even if it gets knocked out of your hands by hitting the ground.

@davidcruse658910 ай бұрын
You can mark over anyone regardless who kicks the ball Alot you seen where players kicking to their forward players Who normally have quite a large leap As for holding the ball In a mark if umpire deems you have a clean solid grab at the ball Then its knocked out afterward on the way down by hitting something or jarring out when hitting the ground The umpire will call it a mark as defence can only knock ball out as ball being marked So if a player juggles the ball while catching then opponent allow to keep trying to knock it away But once its a firm grab you can't knock the ball from their hands its then a penalty with a 50 mtr advancement where the player kicks the ball in play again There's scope that umpire's can deem certain things border line to rules as what he believes leagal Like time balls released and tackle or bump being applied same with mark if he believes it was a solid grab and punched out split second after they'll award the mark but if its punched before a solid grab they'll call play on and a leagal defend Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍

There are a couple rules for what a player can do or not do when attempting to mark the ball or punch it away (spoil the mark). A player cannot show his cleats or soles of his boots to another player when in the air. That is he cannot deliberately, or even accidentally, direct his boots directly at another player. A player when going for a mark or spoil must keep his eyes on the ball at all times when in the air. He cannot use the action of going for the ball as a cover or excuse to target another player to cause deliberate injury either by boots, elbows, shoulders, or other parts of the body.

A mark is when you kick the ball 15 metres in the air without it being touched and is caught on the full by any player, then you have a choice to either play on if your not close enough to score or take an unimpeded kick for goal, yes you can jump off any player even your own team mates, remember there is no off side.
@JackieYoung-q6t10 ай бұрын
A mark is when you kick the ball at least 15 meters without it being touched in the air and then is caught on the full by either team it's a MARK. You will hear the ref's whistle that means the mark has been paid, you asked why they don't get tackled when they catch the ball that's because as soon as a mark is paid if you interfere with the player the team with the ball will get a 50 meter penalty were the get to move 50 meters towards the opposition goal, before play starts again making it easier to score, so you don't do it. It's a very fast game they don't even stop for injuries unless you need to be carried off the field.
