In many cases nigh on a hundred years of history are attached to the tunes, sung by fans and players for ages! I hope this tradition will never be lost. They've inevitably aged, but when sung with gusto by the players at the end of a game, or the crowd once the game ends, it is quite something! The collingwood song came into being in 1906, based on an American tune eight yrs or so older.

Why a lot of them sound familiar - Adelaide’s song is based of a US Marines anthem; Brisbane’s is the French national anthem; Carlton’s is based off a British blackface music hall song (its recently been discussed for its racist origins in the media here); Collingwood’s is Goodbye Dolly Gray, an old music hall song; Essendon’s is the them from the film Sunny Side Up; Fremantle’s is based off a Russian maritime song; Geelong’s is Toreador from the musical Carmen; Gold Coast and GWS are both original; Hawthorn’s is Yankee Doodle Dandy; Melbourne’s is an American military song You’re a Grand Old Flag; I’m not sure of the origin of North Melbourne’s but it’s also used by the Victorian team in State of Origin; Port Adelaide’s is original; Richmond is Riw, Row, Row, an old Bing Crosby song; St Kilda’s is pretty obvious; South Melbourne/Sydney is the Notre Dame victory March from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana; West Coast is original; and Footscray/Western Bulldogs is Sons of the Sea, an old British music hall song.

They started using it back in the 1930s but it didn't become our official song until 1960. Also, we become the Swans in the 30s after a group of players came to South Melbourne (our home until 1982) from Western Australia whose state bird is the black Swan. Lyrics of the Richmond theme song 'We're From Tigerland' written in 1962 by Jack Malcolmson. The original song 'Row, Row, Row' written by William Jerome and James Monaco. Jerome died in 1932 and Monaco in 1945. So it would be some trick for them to have written the lyrics for the Richmond theme song. Sorry to disagree with you, Mr B.
